Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven decided not to mediate in the case of Mr. SPijkers and the Dutch state. He offerred to mediate 1 1/2 months ago, after the 2nd chamber asked him to do so. The reason: cabinet and especially the prime minister were not happy such a role for the professor as he might be demanding files to be opened that the PM prefers to stay closed. Apart from that, the PM was unhappy with the role of Prof. van Vollenhoven in the case around the fire of Schiphol; which caused 2 ministers to resign (among them the PM's favourite).
In 1985 Spijkers revealed that accidents with mines were the fault of negligence of the ministery of Defence. He was fired as a result and authorities on all levels worked against him. In the mean time he was rehabilitated but the case has not been closed yet.
RVD: no comment about the Prime Ministers role.

It doesn't reflect very well on the PM/government, the impression they give is they want to hush things and are afraid that Prof. van Vollenhoven will be as thorough as he was in the last case he researched.

Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven attended the KLM Open Golf Pro Am in Zandvoort on August 22nd, look here. And here another picture by Leo Vogelzang.
He was interviewed by newspaper 'De Pers'. He told Koster & Jojanneke that he has become a 'nature freak' when he moved to Apeldoorn. He also makes a plea to keep the golf greens green, and not to build houses, apartment buildings and offices around them. The article in Dutch here.

Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven, chairman of the national restoration fund' says that the government has to start a serious budget to spend on monuments. This will provide more clarity, he disagrees with the preent policy of the state with incidental money to restore monuments.
He also critisizes the law from 1961 that protects the looks of cities and villiges. According to him the law is outdated and a new law is needed to protect more.

Princess Margriet will attend the regional African Red Cross and Red Crescent meeting at Johannesburg,South-Africa
from tomorrow october 19th till the 22nd.
HRH used to be Chair of the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Foundation for years,
a job she never took lightly and would easily fill a thread dedicated to her enormous work for that organisation. At present
HRH is Vice-Chair of the Dutch Red Cross.
The meetings theme is "Together for action for Africa" .Main subject is the role of local communities in the fight against HIV/Aids,
famine and the growing number of nature catasthrophies due to climate change.
