I'm really surprised to the the UK coming high on the list of "best educated." Most of the members of the royal family haven't been to university, and some of the schools they've used, especially for girls, have been more because of their social status than because of good education. Set against a country like Japan, where the royal family seem to really prize education, the British royals seem to me to be very deficient.

Maybe users have William in their mind!
British royals are uneducated, especially the Queen, who didn't even attend school. However, this doesn't mean they are ignorant.

The Queen and Princess Margaret were home taught by a master from Eton. It was during the time that female royals were always home taught.

I wonder what some members mean by "traditional"
Its interesting to see Jordan on that list because I think that the JRF is quite modern, especially its women, compared to lets say, the Gulf royals or even some European houses. Quite a few of the female members of JRF have military ranks (I dont just mean the honorary ones). Princess Iman, for example, went to Sandhurst, and then there's Princess Aisha. And as for protocol, they dont seem to have many of the restrictions that fall under that heading.
If you look at Queen Rania, she is the most active and involved consort than any other. And thats true whether one likes her or hates her. Infact I think that Rania and Abdullah are the most modern royal couple. Not just because Rania works almost/just as much as her husband, but primarily because their marriage is really one of equals, in every sense of the word. Both of them have said as much so many times. They've said how they go about their duties separtely everyday and then come home and talk about their day and various issues raised during their meetings with Jordanians and make plans together.
I think all of that is very true irrespective of what one thinks of them as a couple.
And here I could even mention Brunei. The women of that royal family are very active as well whether its the Queen, the crown princess, the sultan's daughters, or his sisters.

The Queen was given lessons by an Eton master; Princess Margaret wasn't, because it wasn't considered necessary. They both got most of their education from Marion Crawford, their governess. Apparently Queen Mary didn't think much of the sort of education the Queen Mother wanted them to have, which was minimal. I read somewhere (although I don't know how true it was) that Princess Margaret always resented the fact that she was deprived of a good education.

I was thinking of Charles and his interests and the Queen too. Maybe not formal education per se. I had Japan as second. :) I saw that they are very big on education in that family.

Well said. Itīs a question of how we define these words. Since the majority of us are from what is defined as the "West", we may think that those monarchies and houses which seem to embody "Western" ideals are more "modern" and those that donīt are more "traditional". But of course, this isnīt necessarily so. Itīs a never ending debate. I would add Morocco as a family too where the women have been very much in the public sphere as well. Just like Rania as well. But you make a good point in saying that they are "modern" in comparison to other families. I agree with you there.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I too was surprised, as the British royals are amongst the least formally educated.

I also agree. Rania is a very hard working woman, she manages the kids and has done a lot of social works... well done! She's a good queen.
