What a disaster of an outfit and this is a queen who appears in public without looking in a mirror it seems, with all that she has available to her in the way of help, money and contacts I would expect her to be more stylish and elegant, not this pulled together outfit that a child could do. Not even her smile makes this look good....

the outfit from welcome ceremony looks fine to m minus the necklace, she looks good
the first one is hot mess

Maxima looks gorgeous. Her hat is a little on the large side for me but it wouldn't be an outfit for Maxima without a large hat :D

The 1st outfit should be incinerated and her second one was ok as separate pieces but far too much maroon all together ,the critter/gremlin beard necklace should also be incinerated.

I do not understand Maxima's passion for these bizarre bits of jewelry. I've lost count of the number of otherwise elegant outfits she has devalued by the addition of plastic or feathered or odd jewelry. It reminds me of the kind of thing your dotty great aunt would pick up at the local craft fair, and it never comes across as clever as I think Maxima intends it.

Queen Maxima is in dire need of a proper stylist ,her daytime hair/wardrobe disasters are more and more frequent .

Maxima forgot the first rule of hats . . . balance! You do not wear a huge cartwheel of a hat with a short dress. The coat was so voluminous it gave a lot more balance but, save it for the next Opening of Parliament. I can't think of anywhere else a dress would be long enough to balance it.

I totally agree with you, the last few years I have noticed her style is not the elegant, chic and well put together that it had been. It is getting more outrageous then ever lately........hair is often dirty looking and clothes that look like they came from a junk shop, and over done make-up.......she is in need of a very smart stylist as you say!

Recently back from Netherlands and attending many social things with people of every walk-of-life, I found that this quality of Queen Maxima is very endearing to them. Was told, she was not born royal and is one of us. Was told, we all make dressing errors to some that look to always critique, but that is Maxima's personality and should always shine. Her family comes first and as long as King is fine with the way his wife dresses, all that matters. They love the silly jewelry occasionally and clothes that might not look wonderful on her, but that is their Queen and they adore her for it. They don't want her to look stiffy and always perfect because humans are not that way.

To tell you the truth, although some of Queen Maxima's outfits are a bit out there, when on a proper State event, etc., she always is great and that is appreciated by them also. But, which tickled me, they love her silliness too. Yes, she is now married to royal born but she will always still be Maxima to herself and apparently the normal citizens love her ability to keep both. Just an interesting observation and wanted to share.

If this is the case, then it's clear that Maxima knows her audience, and is happy to play to them rather than random fashion critics on the 'net--which is as it should be. The bonus is that it obviously means that we have many happy years of "What on earth was she thinking?!" in our future.

Win, win ;)

I love that the Dutch think this. I imagine that if it was the British RF, she would have slaughtered by the British press.

They don't want her to look stiffy and always perfect because humans are not that way. That is her strength when it comes to fashion. You see her first, not the clothing and clothing doesn't wear her. She is always in charge, no matter how bad the outfit may be. Her outing in the Stuart tiara is a perfect example. (that was a perfect outing, but the tiara would be overpowering on majority of women)

That´s because she has a natural born ease with people and is able to to interact with people from all walks of life. She has won over the Dutch people at her wedding, when she cried at Adios Nonino and it will take a lot for that credibility to be wiped away. She is as popular as can be and when you are that bulletproof and your personality lights up a room, the outfit always comes second.

That aside, yes, Dutch people are not concerned with perfection and we do not care for a holier than thou attitude. This is a country that likes to pride itself on equality (we have our flaws but ya know) and respect is earned, not given. She has long earned that respect by being highly intelligent and speaking on issues that take an expertice unseen in many other royals.

What wise people the Dutch are. They like the fact that their Queen can just say oh, what the heck about some aspect of her appearance. She’s a Queen, not an actress trying to sell her latest movie or a model strutting the catwalk in the latest trendy fashion. And when she looks good- no one looks better.

EMPRESS MEREL, I believe you have added your own comments to my post as if I wrote about seeing Maxima first and her clothing not wearing her or about the Stuart Tiara. I actually didn't post any of those comments so I don't understand how they were added to something I wrote. Confused.

True,we love Máxima, every aspect of her.Not just from an ordinary fashion queen point of view, which she isn't even though dressed as one,but the bright, intellectual, humorist, touching, warm, serious, dedicated, funny, hilarious, happy who has emphaty as a second nature, nuestra chica latina, free spirited, loving and giving, lots of giving. An admirable wife and Queen,an adorable mother of three. She truly is the "object" of our affection.

For me it was a big change from the perfectionism of Queen Beatrix to the high and lows of Queen Máxima. The difference between the two is that Máxima clearly makes a difference in the sort of engagements, while Beatrix dresses as a Queen for any engagement.

When it is just a "working visit" or a visit in the framework of the Orange Fund or the UN, you can fill it in: a messy Máxima.

When it is about State Visits, Official Visits, escorting the King, baptisms of ships, openings, first-stone-layings, ribbon-cuttings, you can fill it in: a Máxima with hat, gloves, jewels and a whole escort in her slipstream.

There have been sadly more lows than highs there is nothing wrong with dressing down or casual but you'd expect that the queen consort would still look well groomed .If Maxima paid a little more attention to her hair that would be half the battle .

You wrote about how Dutch people see her and her clothing. As a Dutch person, I know why and said so. There is nothing to be confused about.

Nope. Not that unlined print, high/low, ruffle peeping out from under that clean-lines/moderne tent coat. She has 3 hemlines here. I can live with two, but three is one too many.

I love all the shades she's working here. Seriously love that. But the styles look like she put a bunch of similar colors in the dryer and decided to wear the first 4 things that fell out when she opened the door. Fashion by blender. Less would have been more. JMO.

And we can tell it is cooooold.

The hemline will be a nod to Singapore, for 400 years a neighbour of Netherlands East-Indies (Indonesia), I suppose.

I have not seen interior pictures yet. Usually after the welcome ceremony, there is a photo-shoot inside the palace. Then we can see how it looks without the coat.

I love these colors on Maxima, and I love the coat, but what on earth is that stuff trailing out under the coat? Pick a style, clean and architectural, or soft and romantic, but don't try to put the two together. The untidy hemlines plus the plethora of different shades of plum/garnet/burgundy/etc makes this appearance look completely random. I don't mind eclectic, but this is just messy.

Hair looks stunning and love the proper hat. :flowers:

The coat and scarf are beautiful color.

Hem doesn't bother me. As seen by fit if coat, this is not a total look, meaning the cost is meant to be worn at all times. It us just outer wear. I guess I am just not one of those that stress on lengths being perfect match.

Nice hat and coat, lovely colour but I agree the hem line does look odd dangling from the coat.

It's a combination by Claes Iversen, see a similar piece of the Spring Summer Couture 2017 collection:
