But I have a perfectly rational, albeit depressing, explanation for these... eeh... novelty ties.

It's indeed the wives.
As all husbands know, wives will remember any slight even decades later - while plotting their revenge.
So they persuade their husbands to wear outrageous outfits in public. Then they get together: "Look what I made mine wear. Top that"!
And the poor husbands are completely oblivious to this sport of payback that goes on.

Edward looks much better with a hat on. I would even go as far as to say in a top hat and morning suit he's quite handsome.

I agree. Boring style. predictable, properly dressed but boring. For outside events and especially with kids he should lose the ties and suits, something more casual but formal
