You have to put it in the time and place then it makes sense

it might make sense for her to wear that dress on that particular night, but that doesn't make the dress good. It's still ugly, imo.

CP Mary (or her stylist or someone else!) is very good at picking the right outfit for the event. Yes, this dress is unconventional, and yes, it's not to everyone's taste but it's great for the event and she is a very elegant and beautiful woman who can pull of the look. I love it.

The color is pretty and I like the style. I dont like sparkle on dresses in lew of real jewels. So I would lose the collar thing. Hair down and some diamond chandeliers....IMO that would be perfect.

The dress would've been beautiful and simple if it weren't for those feathers. What was Mary thinking?

Wow, perfect. Love the nice brocade material, very sixties, boat neck and short sleeves. Great hairdo and earrings

An absolutely stunning dress. Exquisite color.

Mary indeed looks absolutely wonderful :flowers:
A stunning classy dress, straight up on my 'all time favourite dresses' list.
The color suits Marys colors, shoes in same color and a very elegant hairstyle.

Nice we got a picture from the dinner.

Gorgeous! Love absolutely everything about this look.

Such a beautiful dress and yet another one I would love to see in a full-length version.

They are just the cutest/best dressed couple ever. As we Americans say "Golly!"

I really like Mary's outfit but a teensy pop of color somewhere like the bracelet would have been nice.

A very nice dress and a nice shade of gold. The hairstyle is nice as well.
I'm not too fond of the match shoes, a bit too much for me but it works well.

Love the black love the cream love the jacket ..

The black dress is very pretty and these sales always looks good on Mary. I like the belt matched with the dress and I also really like her hair and make up.

I like this black dress but i don't know i don't like it on Mary. Hair and especially makeup perfect for the night.

:previous: I quite agree. It was only a few days ago when we were counting Catherine's black lace dresses. And if we start actually counting we will find that Mary, as with many, many other royal women, own not one but several black and at least one other colour, be it red, grey, green (OMG), etc. lace dress.

I think it is just too hard to get a lace dress "right". Too coarse and it looks lumpy and unattractive, too fine and it leans toward a negligee. Too intricate and it's and evening dress, too plain and it's daywear. Unfortunately, too often the lady wearing the dress falls in love with the lace and doesn't quite translate it to the particular event.

My all-time most hated lace dresses are those that are black with nude lining, so Mary missed that one. But I do not think this is her most elegant lace dress as it is so fine it almost looks too fussy.

Oh Mary. I too, am sick of the lace dresses, though this isn't bad on you. My biggest complaint is the harsh lipstick! Stick with the softer colors as it suits you.

I don't mind the lace dress. It's pretty and looks good on Mary. I'm with the others on the lipstick being too harsh, however.
