This is indeed a very elegant and flattering look for the Crown Princess. Goes with the event.

Mary looks lovely
After the Duchess of Cambridge, Mary and Maxima are my favourite royals.

Love the look! The top and skirt are gorgeous! The coat and hat make the look even more elegant. Fantastic look from Mary.

Absolutely perfect ensemble for the occasion. But, oh my! Be still my fluttering heart . . . she wore a hat! A beautiful, magnificent, elegant, hat!
Actually, props to all the ladies of the DRF who wore conventional hats, not a fascinator in sight!

I think it is a fabulous combination. The lace top and skirt, the long jacket, the high hat. She looks like a modernization of a nordic lady from the 1700s. The hat and jacket especially. I love how the flower pin on the jacket ties together the lace "dress" and the harsh jacket. Very innovative and stylish and she carries it off beautifully. Bravo.

Even if we know this outfit form old events, I've never noticed this detail on the back of the black coat

Interesting find, Marika! I always love to see pictures taken from the back just to see details like the one you saw.

Another event where Mary pulls off the regal look; having said that I am not too fond of the lace/coat combo, lace is nothing I'd wear daytime and to this specific event.

Really do like the lace and black coat combination, probably the hairdo and hat pull it together.
Her NYC visit looked all very nice, but I think the very long, loose daytime hair, doesn't give off a professional vibe.

I completely disagree. It's not as if she just had a ragamuffin pile of hair on top of her head...

Actually, I think it is a fine line she trod with her hair. Too casual or "in her face" and she would run the risk of being called "unprofessionl" and more interested in fashion than the job at hand. Conversely, if she wore it too structured she would have been slated as being pretentious and out of place. I think she played it pretty well.

The dress is beautiful. Was this an evening event? It looks quite like a cocktail dress to me.
