Unknown Order

Can anyone help me out by identifying the neck badge worn here by PP.
I think this may have been taken in PNG but I don't think the order is from there.
Any thoughts... it seems out of place somehow without a jacket
Thanks for you help.

Unkown (to me) order

Okay this one may be for the Order buffs.
For some reason I cannot seem to upload a picture I have of QEII wearing what I think is a UAE (Abu Dhabi) Order. The picture is from the 1980's (I think)
I have not been able to put a name to the ribbon.
It drapes over HM's left shoulder to her right hip.
The colours (left to right are) white, red/green/red, black. (The green stripe is bordered on both sides by a thin red strip)
The Star is quite ornate with a 7-pointed, green star with gold (what look like) flowers between the points and a red central medallion with gold script

Sorry - I know it would be much easier with the picture.
Thanks again for any help.

Prince Philp's breast stars

I have just noticed after all of these years that Prince Philip wore 2 breast badges on his wedding day. I have to assume that the top one is the Garter which was bestowed upon him just before his marriage. Does anyone know what the other is? My guess is that it is a Greek order - either Oof St George and Constantine or the Oof the Redeemer.
Can anyone elighten me?

i was interested to know whether kate received the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II. from the list below, it looks like both the duchess of cornwall and sophie received it after their marriages, and so did diana. how come kate didn't get it?

in her only white tie appearance, the diplomatic reception, she didn't seem to be wearing it.

They didnt get it immediately.

Camilla married 2005, and received it in 2007
Sophie married in 1999 and received it in 2004.

Catherine will most likely be receiving her Royal Family Order soon. It seems like William & Catherine are starting to attend State events where the Order is usually worn. Sophie didn't get it until 5 years after her marriage. I think Camilla got hers in 2007. Diana got hers pretty early on, a year after her marriage, 1982.

Catherine is the only current senior royal who's up for the Royal Family Order. I'm guessing she got the Diamond Jubilee Medal though. The official British Monarchy website isn't good in updating the royal family's royal Order's info.

I was looking through one of the books in my royalty library (such as it is) from the late 1970s and there are a couple pictures of Grand Duke Jean as Royal Colonel of the Irish Guard wearing a unknown sash to me. The sash was equally split in three as navy blue/red/navy blue. I cannot place this ribbon. I assume it is British and presumably before he received his Garter.
Can anyone help me out with this?
Thanks.

Maybe it was the Duke of Kent you were looking at. He wore this order (St Michael and St George) before being given the Garter and he and Grand Duke rode together at Trooping the Colour. It can be difficult to tell who is who when they are wearing those bearskin hats.

Style of wear

I have a question regarding the wearing or ribbons.
I found this picture of the Duchess of Gloucester at a 2005 return banquet at the Guildhall. She is wearing her sash of the RVO and her other medals as miniatures. My question is whether it is proper form for HRH to wear her RVO sash as well as her miniature RVO medal denoting the same order (seen at our left of her medals board)?

I would think that she probably has one board that she uses that is all-encompassing and which I am sure is not so easy to change-up for every different outing.

I just thought it redundant? Anyone know the "rule"...if there is one?
Thanks for you help.

Hi Ashelen,
I do not know if you managed to review the threads here is the Royal Forums but maybe the link below may be a good place to start. Ella Kay over at her Order of Sartorial Splendor provides a very good summary on the subject of Royal Family Orders (as well as many other subjects). I would be hard pressed to provide you with a better explanation.

Windsor Jacket

I do not know if there is a more appropriate thread for this question, but I am sure that someone might have some insight.

I was wondering who is "allowed" to wear the Windsor Jacket at state occasions at Windsor. The jacket, worn by men, is a very dark blue with red collars and cuffs.

I have seen The DofE, HM's sons and ViceAdm Tim Laurence as well as the DofGloucester, DofKent and Prince Michael of Kent wearing the jacket. My understanding is that some senior courtiers can wear the jacket as well.

I have attached a picture of the Lord Chamberlain, the Earl Peel from the
Irish banquet. I have seen video with a gentleman escorting Dame Judi Dentch at the banquet - maybe Master of the Horse but I am not sure.

Does anyone know who is privileged enough to wear it and how the "honour" is bestowed?

Thanks in advance.

Dman,
Yes I did do some due diligence and checked out Wikipedia but it was not very helpful - in fact it did not tell me anything that I did not already know. It makes no mention of who (specifically) gets to wear the jacket or how the honour is bestowed.
I sort of aliken it to the Royal Family Order for women....you don't know who has been given it until you see them wear it (except that only femal members of the family get the RFO - not courtiers)
Maybe I shoud take ar look at my Royal Encyclopedia to see what it has to say. It is getting a bit dated now but is usually a good place to start.
Thanks for the help.

Prince Carl Philip and the Order of the Polar Star

I notice on the main blog that is was Prince Carl of Sweden's 35th birthday on May 13th. The picture that accompanied the article reminded me of a thread some time ago discussing the black ribbon neck badges that the Swedish royal men have been wearing of late.

At the time, as I recall, it was thought that they had reverted to using the older style black ribbon for the Order of the Polar Star as opposed to the newer (after 1975 I think) blue ribbon with yellow sides.

Was this ever definitively settled? and,
Is the black ribbon only to be used for evenings/formal events. That is, will we see the blue ribbon at a daytime or less formal event?

Prince Harry - Aide-de-camp

I have a question that someone out there might be able to answer or shed some light on.

I was doing some research of QEII's Aides-de-Camp. I noticed that Prince Harry has not been so honoured. But I did notice that, at the wedding of his brother, he is wearing what appears to be Aide-de-Camp aiguillettes on his Blues and Royals dress uniform.

Does anyone know if this is part of the uniform itself? or was he designated as an ADC for his brother that day?

Prince Henry did not wear these aguillettes as an aide-de-camp to Her Majesty but as a commissioned officer of the Household Cavalry, wearing full dress. (Commissioned means that Prince Henry has been specially enlisted into the Household Cavalry. In reality he was/is serving in the Army Air Corps and not at all in the Cavalry).

He was commissioned into the Household Cavalry but was seconded to the Army Air Corps. He is now back in HHC, his secondment having ended

I see, I missed the news he definitely quit from the Army Air Corps. I thought a commissioned officer is the one who holds a real command and for Prince Henry hat was in the AAC. Does he hold a real command as well in the Household Cavalry? It is a bit diffuse I must say.

Harry is a Captain in the Blues and Royals. It became obvious fairly early on that he would not be able to serve in Afghanistan as a soldier. The secondment (which only happened after having passed rigorous aptitude tests) would enable him to serve in Afghan - as long as he passed his training.

He has said that he wishes to be full soldier and therefore has to go through competitive promotions sstem how. His squadron are not returning to Afghan and therefore he went back to the Blues and Royals in order to work for promotion and work on Invictus Games

Harry isn't a aide de camp to the Queen. William was made one in 2013. The braid worn by Harry is part of the full dress uniform for officers in the Household Calvary. William has little EIIR on his shoulder plus the braid on his uniform as a ADC.

ADC...not!

Thanks all. I assumed that it was part of his uniform but always good to have confirmation.

Just noticed this hadn't been answered.

The Duke of Edinburgh is wearing the Grand Master's Badge of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The insignia is unique to the Grand Master, in the same way the Grand Master's Badges of the Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George and Order of St John of Jerusalem are worn by the Prince of Wales, Duke of Kent and Duke of Glouscester, respectively.

The Duke of Edinburgh ceased to wear this insignia regularly after being appointed to the Order of Merit, except when attending occasions specifically relating to the Order of the British Empire in his role as Grand Master.

Another unanswered question.

Yes, the Duke is wearing the star of the Order of the Garter (awarded on the 19th of November, 1947) and the Grand Cross star of the Order of the Redeemer (also awarded in 1947). It was a subtle but appropriate acknowledgement of his past as a Prince of Greece and Denmark and future as a Prince of the United Kingdom.

Thanks for taking the time to answer those (long ago) posts Von Schlesian.

Your answers are much appreciated - I will update my notes accordingly.

Here's another you may know the answer to...

I have notice that the DofE usually only wears 2 breast stars with naval uniform but 3 or 4 with army or air force uniform. Is there a particular reason for this - stipulated by each service?

Dear Bryce;

You're welcome and I apologise for the long delay. In the case of the Duke of Edinburgh (and Prince of Wales), they both tend to restrict themselves to two stars in British uniforms, except when wearing the uniform of a Colonel-in-Chief of one of the Guards regiments. When wearing a uniform of one of their Commonwealth appointments, they tend only to wear the Garter star or an order specific to the nation in question.

In white tie (generally state banquets), the custom for both is to wear the star of the most senior order they have received from the guest nation or host nation, in addition to the Garter (with both orders placed side by side, with the foreign order in the principal position).

The Dukes of Gloucester and Kent regularly wear their three breast stars when in uniform or full evening dress.

I wonder what is the future of the Dutch Order of the Golden Ark?
