Danish Residences General Discussion

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
How far is their new house from the Palace? From Alex's house? From Nikolai's new boarding school?
What will now happen to the apartment (at the palace) that Joachim Marie & children have been semi living in? Will someone else move in?

Thanks

Not living in Copenhagen myself, so Zealanders please correct me.
The distance between Alexandra and Joachim is a comfortable bicycle ride.
Depending on the traffic I'd guess the distance between Amalienborg and Emiliekildevej (J&M's home) is 30-45 minutes by car.

The distance to the boarding school is about one hour by car, again depending on the traffic.

It will indeed be intesting to see what will happen to the apartment at Amalienborg. My guess is that they may keep it for a while, as a place to crash after late night events.
Otherwise I think Christian is eventually going to take over, most likely he will share the apartment with one of his siblings.
But that's some ten years from now.

ADDED: The residence of the American ambassador is located close to Emiliekildevej, so security in the neighborhood is high as it is!

Shouldn't we try and agree on a name for J&M's home? To keep it simple. How about Villa Joachim?

Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix can easily bicycle between Villa AM and Villa JM. It will take them about 20-30 minutes depending on how fast they ride :)

Yep :)

More like 60-75 minutes, but then again it´s Prince Joachim, who´s behind the wheel, so perhaps more likely 30-45 minutes :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I think Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will keep their appartment at the palace as a pied-à-terre. It comes handy when there is a major event at the palace, that then the couple can retreat inside (for an example to change clothes, to stay overnight after an evening function, etc.).

It wouldn´t take them long to drive home from Amalienborg. With no traffic it´s a 15 minute drive :flowers:

That is true but without an own appartment inside the palace, they are "guest", so to say. To me it looks very convenient to have an own location inside the palace.

Muhler, I don't know if I am right !
Prince Joachim inherited Schackenberg from a rich Danish Nobleman it was his own !.
He sells now his heritage to Denmark and will have a lot of money without doing anything.

Ahh, yes, then we are in agreement :)

Exactly :)

Joachim inherited Schackenborg because there were no willing heirs left in the Schack family to take over. (Presumably they knew how neglected the manor was). As I understand it Schackenborg was essentially a fief, so it would revert to the crown and that was in this case Joachim, who got the manor as his personal property.

The DRF had to spend a lot of money on the manor just to prevent it from falling apart, so it has very much been an uphill struggle for Joachim.
Why he chose to sell and why he chose to sell now, we can only speculate.
The financial result for Joachim has certainly been very good indeed! Should Joachim decide to sell the remaining land in Southern Jutland, he, our Marie and his four children, with spouses, will be able to live a very comfortable middleclass life for the rest of their lives, without working.
The investors in Scackenborg have also benefitted a lot.

Thanks for the insider traffic knowledge, FasterB. :)

Staten sælger ud: Bliv nabo til Amalienborg - Ejendomme | www.business.dk

The state is selling some property that is a part of "the Amalienborg complex". That means buildings next to Amalienborg.
Quite a number of building next to Amalienborg belongs to the state, some of the are offices, but there are also a number of apartments which are used by state employees, or retired state employees, including present of formers employees at the court.

Due to the very good location these buildings must be expected to fetch a very high price!

The state owns a large number of buildings in very attractive locations, like police stations, offices and so on and sometimes such buildings are sold and that's what happens here.

Summary of article in Billed Bladet #33, 2014.
Written by Henrik Salling.

We get some more details about Villa Joachim.
The distance between Villa Joachim and Villa Alexandra is five kilometres.
The distance to Amalienborg is eleven kilometres.

Among those who live in the nieghborhood is the wealthy business man, Fritz Schur, who has become of close friend of PH in particular and who is looking after the Regent Couple's private investments. (Something the late McKinney Møller did).
Mary's hairdresser, Søren Hedegaard and his husband, Preben Christensen, also live nearby.
(I can add that it is said that people from Klampenborg where Villa Joachim is located, hardly open their mouths when speaking, lest a golf ball should end up in their mouths...).

The living space in the villa is some 344 square meters on three floors and additional 183 square meters of cellar, with cinema and gunroom. (*)
The ground floor consist of a hall, two living rooms and a suite with a fireplace and a dining room connected to the kitchen.
There are several bedrooms on the upper floors.
The villas was build in 1919 and is located in a garden of 2.500 square meters.
- The living space will however be smaller than at Schackenborg, some 1.000 Square meters less.

Joachim and our Marie are expected to take over the house by 1. October.

(*) I think the journalist Henrik Salling has misunderstood what a gunroom is. It is not a room to store weapons. But a room for gentlemen where hunting weapons and hunting trophys are displayed on the walls.
Beforehand the ladies withdrew to a salon, while the gentlemen shared a drink, or many, in the gunroom and played some billard.

Is that due to snobbery or are they just really really shy?

Well, let me put it like this: People born and bred in Klampenborg tend to substitute the letter o with a, thus golf is pronounced galf in that area.
If you live in Klampenborg money is no problem, except when the bank calls to ask you to withdraw some because they can't close their vaults...

You nailed it, Muhler :whistling::ROFLMAO::flowers: And if you can´t afford to live in Klampenborg then you choose Gentofte or Hellerup :flowers:

Riiight, so you can hear them from miles away:lol: and not a lot of humility then! sounds like 101 Reykjavík which is our version of Klampenborg I guess, but they're more of a "rich hippies" type:lol:

Indeed, the house Alexandra lives in is a mere allotment garden shack. Those who live further away from Klampenborg than Gentofte and Hellerup are poor people.
Let me put it in another way: One's butler lives in Hellerup or Gentofte.

There are other neighborhoods like that in other parts of DK of course (and Reykjavik ;)). In Aarhus there is Strandmarksvej. One does not live on Strandmarksvej if one has only got two boats - one simply wouldn't fit in...

Have they moved into their new home yet?

TV2 Finance has had a look at the public records regarding the purchase of Joachim and our Marie's new house: Joachim køber palæet kontant: Smider 34,5 millioner - TV 2 Finans

The price was 34.5 million DKK which in Danish context is very expensive indeed!
And paid in cash and that means he owes nothing on the house.

34.5 million DKK = 4.6 million € = 5.7 million $ = 3.6 million £

The court has declined to comment on the private economy of J&M.

Due to QMII turning 75 next month, BB has compiled a few pics from inside Amalienborg and Chateau Cayz and they have had a lifestyle expert say a lot of blah blah based on the photos. I'll spare you that ordeal and instead caution you! You may wish to have a pair of sunglasses in your hands as some of the furnitures are... patterned...!

Her dressing room does not llok anything special just a huge room! I would have imagine like the one you find here in the US in the rich and famous!
Luxury Dressing Rooms Design Ideas, Pictures, Remodel and Decor

Danish people are very minimal. Their residencies are very classy, like their residents
!!!
Just I was imagining a different dressing room for her, with the many outfits, shoes, hats, gloves, gala dresses, etc...... I imagine all of them into a plastic bag like when they come out of a dry cleaner. into a closet , organize by colour, draws for gloves, scarfs, etc.... the same I would imagine for Mary too!

This is the dressing room of a 75 year old woman, probably furnished and decorated decades ago. I'm sure her outfits and accessories are in drawers, closets etc. Only a small part of the room can be seen. The clothes and shoes in the photo are chosen for a visit to the U.S. and are waiting to be packed.

I'm sure Mary and Marie and all the younger royals have more modern dressing rooms.

Thanks Muhler for the great pics.

You are welcome, Tarlita. :)

Not being an expert on dressing rooms it seems to me that the dressing room depicted here is just as much a workspace for QMII's ladys maid. In the sense that outfits, shoes and dresses are stored here, mended, laid out and checked by the LM.
I can well imagine QMII getting dressed and putting on her warpaint in her bedroom or perhaps in a secondary dressing room. Just like the one Mary has at their mansion at Amalienborg. If you look at the floorplan, you can clearly see that there is a kind of wardrobe/workplace for Mary's ladys maid and stylist (9) and a separate dressing room for Mary (7) right next to their bedroom (6). https://app.box.com/s/qlpm67z2u5lxvfir8zw5u3xfulnwx7qx
But QMII and PH have separate bedrooms, that's no secret.

ADDED: #1 - Nanny's room.
#2 For the twins, at least initially, but they may have taken over the two vacant/guestrooms that are not numbered, or at least one of them by now.
#3 & 4 = Children's rooms, Perhaps Christian and Bella?
#5 = Frederik's dressing room.

In Billed Blade #27, 2015.
We are told that Joachim and our Marie have finally moved into their new home.

Joachim told BB's reporter Ken Richter: "We have moved in".
The house has gone through a thorough interior renovation to suit their taste and needs.

It may be about time to give Gråsten Manor it's own thread.

Especially if, as it is very much hoped in Southern Jutland(!), M&F intends to stay there for the main part of their summer holidays and perhaps even take over.

So speculations about what will happen to Gråsten Manor once M%F take the front seat has started in earnest.

Summary of article in Billed Bladet #29, 2015.
Written by Ulrik Ulriksen.

Gråsten Manor was a wedding present from the state to the Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid back in 1935. They started using the place in 1936.
Wedding present in the sense that the state owns the place, but the right to use it befell to the DRF.
However, since 1935 very little interior renovation has been done! So the place need more that two coats of paint and I think it's safe to assume that the interior is "charming" and something that would make producers of antique shows drool.
The exterior of the building is well kept, that is paid for by the state, but sanitation, electric systems, wallpaper that is probably going to be the next major project for the DRF, or rather M&F. And they would probably find several local and very wealthy sponsors when a thorough renovation is to start.

One local enthusiast who knows the place very well indeed is a Poul Olsen, and he says: "It is perhaps not a simple task just to take over the manor and move in right away. Inside Gråsten Manor is not offering the wild luxury many perhaps believe. It is certainly not a luxury summer cottage.
Younger residents may wish to alter a good deal of the interior which stems back to the 1930's.
The bathrooms with classic terazzo-floor (*) is for example something that needs a good deal of work. But also the living quarters of the employees need a loving hand".
On the other hand there are lots of rooms at Gråsten.

QMII said at an interview in 2012 about M&F taking over the place: "We all love to stay at Gråsten and the Crown Princely Couple fortunately very much so, because they over time shall take over the place. It is to take place already while I'm around, because it certainly is the idea that they shall have Gråsten, if they can cope. But now we'll see. For the time being they need to find their own legs".

-----------

If I am to predict anything. It will be that M&F will officially take over Gråsten within the next three-five years and that will also be the beginning of a major renovation of the manor. Judging from the odd pics it seems M&F have finally furnished their own home at Amalienborg and Kancellihuset at Fredensborg has also been renovated.
So I predict M&F will use Amalienborg as their main winter home. Kancellihuset as a weekend retreat and perhaps official summer residence outside the school summer holiday.
They will then stay at Gråsten for the main part of the six week school summer holiday, and perhaps during the Christmas holiday as well. Because we must expect M&F to begin hosting the larger Christmas celebrations now. A renovated Gråsten would be ideal, because it is larger than Marselisborg and more practical for larger family gatherings, after all with J&M we are now talking eight children plus nannies and other staff that need accommodation.
Trend will be used for the shorter family breaks, like the Easter holiday and the Autumn holiday.

That means that QMII will use Marselisborg for their summer, Christmas and Easter holidays. It's better suited for two people and a couple of friends. And being located in Aarhus it offers better opportunities for the Regent Couple to enjoy culture and art. Not to mention QMII's passion for archeology and pre-history! - And, and this is something we have to consider as well, the very advanced Aarhus Hospital is nearby.

Gråsten is after all located at the edge of a very small town and that means it's safer to take the family out riding bikes along the country lanes than in Aarhus. Even though there is a forest right next to Marselisborg there is much more traffic there.
Also, I believe M&F are more into enjoying the countryside, whether that is on foot, bike or horse. The Regent Couple are, and have always been, more city-dwellers in that respect.

So to sum up:
Amalienborg: Winter and main residence.
Gråsten: The school summer holidays and perhaps Christmas as well.
Trend: Weekends, Easter and Autumn holiday.
Kancellihuset: Summer, outside the school summer holiday and a weekend retreat.
