Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland
When Her Majesty visits Northern Ireland her official residence is Hillsborough in Co Down. It is quite small but very beautiful.

It's owned by the government.

Ada,
You must check out the link provided above! The interior is quite charming and very bright. It looks extremely comfortable without being staid or boring but not so polished that you think you are in a museum. Beautiful interiors and furnishings make it a stylish residence for the Monarch when she is in Northern Ireland.

Hillsborough Castle used to be the home of the Governor of Northern Ireland.
As it happens, the man who was House Manager of Hillsborough for 25 years, retired in December 2009. His first major event was the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement by Margaret Thatcher and Garret Fitzgerald in November 1985.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently attended a garden party at the castle.

Last week, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a garden party at Hillsborough Castle, The Queen’s official residence in Northern Ireland. Since the manor house is little used in comparison to the residences in London, it often slips under the radar of Royal watchers, but is well worth a visit.

Last night on channel 4 Penelope Keith presented third program of Penelope Keith at Her Majesty's Service this time focusing on Hillsborough Castle, the people that work there, looking inside the castle and behind the scenes and discussing the Queens visits to Ireland. It's worth a watch.

Yes, I've been watching all of Penelope Keith's series and thought the episode on Hillsborough Castle was an interesting watch, I learnt a lot of new things. Hillsborough Castle also seems to be a beautiful place!
(Penelope Keith also had a series about hidden villages in Britain, which, if you're ever looking into coming here, is also worth the watch).

From the Historic Royal Palaces Facebook:
"Happy Valentine’s Day from Historic Royal Palaces! We’re getting in the spirit with our favourite romantic tale from the history of Hillsborough Castle.
The story goes that in the 1870s Annie Fortescue Harrison, a composer and daughter of a Conservative MP, visited Hillsborough Castle and fell in love with Lord Arthur Hill, son of the 4th Marquess of Downshire. The difference in their social standing meant their relationship was not encouraged and Annie left, apparently broken-hearted. Arthur soon married another woman (also called Annie!), who tragically died a year to the day after their wedding, having just given birth to their son.
Meanwhile, Annie Harrison had discovered the poem ‘In the Gloaming’ by Scottish writer Meta Orred, which seemed to perfectly encapsulate her feelings about Lord Arthur and her thwarted relationship, so she set the verses to music.
Some time later, Lord Arthur heard ‘In the Gloaming’ at a concert in London and was reminded of Harrison, only to find that she had written the piece! This lead to their reunion and eventual marriage in March 1877, and the song was published that same year. Annie went on composing, and she and her husband became leading lights in musical society in Ireland, with many of her works performed at Hillsborough Castle and at Belfast's Ulster Hall.
Today a copy of the ‘In the Gloaming’ score sits on the piano in the State Drawing Room at Hillsborough."

On April 21, 2016 a 21 gun salute took place in the grounds of Hillsborough Castle to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.
