But not just for the sake of appointing women, etc. Otherwise the award will cease to have any meaning.

The Order will always have meaning as long as it's being given to those who deserve it. Many of the Order's need fresh, young, diverse, and deserving faces.

He has so many now it is a wonder he doesn't tilt to the left from the weight of them ;)

First- Agreed. I don't know how he walks!
Second- Amen- Especially on the deserving part!

Prince Charles given honorary military titles ahead of NZ visit:

"Prince Charles is to be given three military titles when he visits New Zealand in November.

The Queen has given her approval for the Prince of Wales to be made Admiral of the fleet of the Royal New Zealand Navy, a Field Marshal for the army and Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Prime Minister John Key announced Prince Charles' appointments, saying they would be formally recognised during a visit with his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.

"These appointments recognise the consistent and strong support Prince Charles has maintained for the New Zealand Defence Force," Key said.

"Speaking at this year's ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Gallipoli, the Prince demonstrated a deep empathy and understanding for the contribution and sacrifice of our Defence Force personnel in conflicts and peace keeping operations around the world."

The Prince of Wales has a strong association with the military, with a naval career that followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and both of his great-grandfathers.

The Prince also qualified as a Royal Air Force pilot flying both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. Members of the Royal family hold a number of honorary appointments within the NZDF.

The Prince of Wales was appointed as Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal New Zealand Air Force by The Queen in 1977, and relinquished this honorary position prior to his appointment as Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force."

When the Prince and Duchess visit, it will be the second royal visit this year.

The new Peers mean there are now 826 people in the House of Lords.

Danny Alexander isn't doing too bad for himself. Ten years ago he was the Head of Communications for the Cairngorms National Park Authority. Now he's receiving a knighthood.

This after he turned down a peerage.

This seems like the ultimate cronies club. Why not just elect people?

Another CBE: @MindCharity's CEO, Paul Farmer, for services to mental health. An honour William & Kate will, no doubt, be pleased to see.

When is Beckham getting the most overdue football knighthood in history (from his point of view, of course)

Staff of royals' charities honoured with New Year gongs as William and Kate step up voluntary work

Staff at charities backed by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have received a string of New Year honours.
The gongs were announced as sources say William and Kate plan to step up their work in 2016.

There was also an OBE for Pamela Baxter, deputy director of another of Kate’s patronages, the National Portrait Gallery.

Queen's Birthday Honours: Rod Stewart is knighted while Ant n' Dec get OBEs
od Stewart thanked the Queen for the “monumental” honour of being knighted in the Queen’s 90th birthday honours list tonight as he became Sir Rod Stewart for services to music and charity.

Sir Rod was the headline act among the 1,149 people to receive an award in a list which also included OBEs for the TV presenters Ant and Dec and the actor Brian Blessed, and a Companion of Honour medal for Dame Vera Lynn at the age of 99.

Astronaut Tim Peake, meanwhile, became the first Briton honoured for work in space.

Sir Rod, 71, whose music career began in 1961, said: “I’ve led a wonderful life and have had a tremendous career thanks to the generous support of the great British public.

“This monumental honour has topped it off and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

With a pun on one of his most famous songs, he added: “I thank Her Majesty and promise to ‘wear it well’.”

You'd think she wouldve given some members of her family an honour in this her 90th year.

Which particular achievements were you thinking of that are deserving of recognition?

Record Breaking ref Nigel Owens received and MBE for his services! Fabulous!

You'd think she wouldve given some members of her family an honour in this her 90th year.

Why?

She gives them lots of honours as it is so why give them anything more simply for being her family and that is the only reason they get honours - they don't actually have to do anything to earn them - unlike the other recipients.

To give any member of her family an honour would be to say to the other recipients "you had to work hard for your honours but others only had to be born into the right family".

Other than Anne and Zara due to their equestrian achievements, Philip, Andrew, Harry who saw active service in war zones and The Duke of Kent and Prince Michael in peace keeping forces in Cyprus along with other areas what have the others actually achieved that would warrant any honours????

Before I get attacked for not mentioning Charles and William's military service I would like to remind posters that they didn't serve in 'active war zones' or in 'peacekeeping' forces but were lucky enough to serve in peaceful areas - in the military yes but not under fire or the potential for being under fire as did the others mentioned.

If you look to the extended family you do find some more service. Duke of Gloucester's heir served in Iraq and Kosovo, and the Earl of St Andrews is a former diplomat. But I agree, honoring other members of the royal family simply to honor them on her birthday, would diminish the honor of those honored this year for a reason.

I think had he not been Royal, the Prince of Wales may well have been honoured for the work of the Prince's Trust. If its success continues, the Invictus Games is something that would result in a founder being honoured but in years to come, not yet. Of course it can be argued the success of each has a lot to do with their founder's Royal status.

The Duke of Edinburgh and Tim Lawrence were both Mentioned in Dispatches. That seems to be unconnected to their status as was the CB Tim was awarded at the same time Zara was awarded her MBE as it is an honour in the gift of the government and not the Queen.

But otherwise I agree with Iluvbertie.

Did actor Robert Hardy receive a knighthood?
