For once I can read through the comments without wondering how people can be so rude. Most of the comments are very kind and talk of the Duchess of Kent in a good light.

Duchess of Kent opens up about famous hug with Jana Novotna | Daily Mail Online
The Duchess of Kent (Katharine) seems such a lovely person. I'd read about her but never heard her speaking voice. Apparently, she taught music for many years in her hometown of Hull (Yorkshire). She has spoken eloquently in interviews about the importance of music to humankind. It has given her students a sense of confidence and self-worth. She said even those who don't end up pursuing music as a career are immensely helped by their exposure to music in becoming successful in other fields. She started a charity years ago to help gifted and financially needy students to be able to pursue their music education...

It's really nice to learn more about the Duchess of Kent. She seems a very kind, classy and modest person who has done wonderful things in her life. I haven't been able to find the recent interview she gave in advance of Wimbledon. The Duchess' kindness to Jana Novotna will always be a memorable Wimbledon moment.

There's also a lovely Pathe clip on Youtube of the Duke and Duchess of Kent's wedding day in 1961 -- everyone was so young then! Young Princess Anne and young Lady Jane Fellowes (then Jane Spencer) were bridesmaids. Diana's father, Earl Spencer, can also be seen among the guests at York Minster Church. It's interesting that cameras were allowed back then to film the wedding ceremony of a minor royal, granted times were different and the Kent family were the young Queen's first cousins (plus there were fewer extended family members). Katharine (Worsley) was a beautiful bride.

What a delightful interview! Whatever her physical frailties are she's sharp and has a great sense of humor!

It is a wonderful interview and The Duchess remains as sparkling as ever. She is obviously physically frail but it is simply a matter of the fact that she is a physically delicate person and she is, indeed, 85.

But she is sprightly and lovely. Aside from Her Majesty, I have long felt The Duchess of Kent is the most deserving royal lady of a bow or curtsy.

Here's a permalink to the picture. Considering how rarely the Duchess makes public appearances, it seems she picked a really interesting cause to support.

The Queen is 66 years on the throne but it's easy to forget that the Kents, in particular, have been with her, supporting her, for all of those 66 years as well. No wonder the Queen gets so cross when the press try and dismiss her cousins as 'minor royals' and 'hangers on'. They were working for the monarchy long before even Her Majesty's children were and they still are. No wonder she admires and respects them so much.

I would have to agree. The very term "minor royals" is an insult. To be honest, the fact that QE is our Queen is the result of an accident of birth and to call her paternal cousins minor royals is, by default, an insult to her.

When she ascended the throne, she relied on her royal cousins to work with her for the monarchy and for the country. I don't think her sister was much help but her cousins served in the military while oftentimes their wives aided HM. Put another way, they are the grandchildren of King George V just as Harry is the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II.
