There are a lot of reasons why the Duke of Gloucester has taken over the Dawn Service from The Duke of Kent - and being Colonel-in-Chief is only one of them:

1. He spent a couple of years of his childhood living in Australia at Yarralumla - the official home of the GG in Canberra, when his father was GG of Australia.

2. His ex-son-in-law was a kiwi and so two of his grandchildren a part kiwi (and part Maori).

The Duchess of Gloucester as Patron of the Friends of St Paul's Cathedral recorded a message for their 70th anniversary:

On April 27 the Duchess of Gloucester as Deputy Colonel-in-Chief of the Adjutant General's Corps opened their new Gloucester Building and attended the annual Triple Crown Military Skills Challenge Competition.

It's always nice to see the Duchess. Her engagements are meaningful and everyone seems to enjoy her presence. Hope to see much more of her and the Duke in this Jubilee year.

They married on July 8, 1972 at St Andrew's Church at Barnwell, Northamptonshire.

To mark the occasion a lovely new portrait has been released today.
A lovely detail:

How lovely. After all those years still such a lovely couple!

The Duke starts to look a bit older (he is clearly in his (later) 70s) - while the Duchess remains relatively 'young' in her looks.
