Royal Ascot: 16-20 June 2009
Royal Ascot 2009
June 16 - June 20
~ o ~
Ascot Racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711 and since that time, a further eleven monarchs have leant their patronage to the Royal race course.
The Royal Meeting, held annually in the third week in June, is steeped in tradition and pageantry and is interwoven into the very fabric of British culture.
The five-day meeting commences on a Tueday and each day begins with the Royal Procession - the arrival of The Queen and the Royal party in horse-drawn landaus, which parade along the track in front of the race- goers. The Royal Procession dates back to the 1820s and the reign of King George IV, at which time it was referred to as the Royal Parade or Royal Drive.
The Royal Enclosure is at the heart of Royal Ascot. Entry to the enclosure is by sponsorship from an existing member who has attended in four previous years. Within this area, gentlemen are required to wear morning dress with a top hat and ladies must wear formal day wear. The origin of this tradition can be traced back to around the time of the running of Ascot’s most famous race, The Gold Cup, which was inaugurated in 1807 and remains to this day the most important long distance horse race on the flat anywhere in the world. At that time, Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear 'waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons'.
The Queen takes a close personal interest in the running of Ascot and is kept informed of the order of running and the development of the racing programme at the Royal Meeting.
The Duke of Devonshire has held the formal role of 'Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot' since 1997 and is responsible for all aspects of the Royal Enclosure and the Royal Family's attendance at Ascot.
Ascot racecourse has been redeveloped twice during The Queen's reign; the first redevelopment was completed in 1964 and the second in 2006, when Her Majesty formally re-opened the new complex. During the second redevelopment, the 2005 Royal Meeting was staged at York Racecourse.
Royal Ascot 2009 will start on June 16th and end June 20th, 2009.

Thanks for the pictures The colour of the Queens dress is interesting and beautiful! Looks very elegant, Camillas Outfit is nice also. But I'm not sure about Beatrice and Anne always ruins her outfit with those ugly sunglasses

Princess Beatrice and style just don't mix. She should try branching out a little in the hat department for a start. The more solid or bustier the woman, the 'larger' the hat or fascinator so as to achieve balance. Her choices are, imo, always ill conceived. They just don't work for her and with the assistance that could be provided, I see no reason to consistently present the way that she does. She dresses not according to what suits her, but what she wishes (and I'm guessing thinks) she would look good wearing. I'm not being harsh, just honest as is my opinion.
The Duchess of Cornwall dressed very smartly and the hat is wonderful for her. She looks best in white's, creams and pastels.

Her Majesty's ensemble is just adequate because I am not fond of the yellow colour. I liked her pearl necklace and classical bag.
Duchess of Cornwall's hat is perfectly-chosen, whereas her outfit by Vivienne Westwood does not flatter her much. Overwhelming shoulder pads in the striped coat and a dress with a flowery pattern and daring neckline look cheap to me.
Burnt orange colour does nothing for Princess Anne. Sunglasses aggravated the whole look.
Princess Haya's ensemble seemed to be well-fitted. I am not sure about the hat though.
Princess Michael looked great. A pale pink colour nicely matched a pale blue one. I wonder about stones her necklace is made of. Hopefully we shall see Lady Gabriella attending the Ascot race this year.

You are so right in everything! I don't want to be harsh also, she seems to be a nice Lady, but her dresses IMO are always to short. Don't know, if it is because she's tall, but it absolutely don't suits her... No, she has no luck with styling...

Anne's dress colour is the most eye-catching one

Getty Images - Unsupported browser detected i really like the Queens hat - Rachel Trevor Morgan is the best milliner around far better that Philip Treacy in my opinion
But i dont like the dress very much i prefer the Queen in long coats rather than those short jackets
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/88...-Entertainment really dislike Sophie's dress

The Queen looked lovely, easily the best-dressed Royal of the day (not that she had any competition).
Camilla's hat was perfect for the occasion. However both the dress and the coat looked rather plain and uninteresting, she could have done so much better. I hope Camilla's fascination with Vivienne Westwood will end soon.
I'm glad Princess Anne chose bright colours but that's about the only positive thing about her look; the different shades or orange of her hat and suit just didn't work for her and the entire ensemble seemed ill-fitted.
Beatrice's hat is just too terrible for words. It looked like someone had accidentally sat on a wedding cake and then on a plate; for some reason Beatrice seemed to like the resulting horror. The hat also accentuated the roundness of her face.
I thought Beatrice's hat would be the hand-down winner of the worst hat at Ascot, but that was until I saw Sophie's hat. I am not sure what it was or why would anyone want to wear it in public. Her black and white outfit was terrible as well.
Princess Michael looked wonderful; her hat, suit and accessories were all perfect for the occasion. Great match of the ever-classic combination of pale blue and pale pink. Not even those sunglasses could spoil the general effect.
I thought Princess Haya looked rather plain. The outfit was fine, however the hat was ugly.

I don't know...I really like Sophie's outfit and hat....very chic. Not a usual, summer choice, but elegant to me nonetheless..

Interesting first day.
Adore Camilla, she looks incredible.
Her Majesty, I love the fact that she went for a new colour but not this one.
Princess Anne looks incredible, shocking actually, never thought i would see her in something like that.
Beatrice, I have a feeling she's worn the dress and jacket before but the fascinator is nice.
Sophie looks beautiful, love the fascinator and the balck and white ensemble.
All around good day.
