Relationships between Members of the British Royal Family

What kind of relationship do they have? Are they close?

I'd expect Charles and Anne are not very close with Andrew and Edward because there's a pretty large age difference between the oldest and the youngest. The British royals do not seem as close as do the Belgians or the Norwegians, for example.

And we don't frequently see family portraits, so we have little to judge from.

I heard that Anne backed Edward up when he dropped out of the Marines and that he stayed with her. They don't seem like natural allies, but maybe she liked him standing up to their father.

Anne and Charles are close I read in a book especially when they were kids. But Anne always got impatient with him cause he's slow. Anne & Edward are close he gave Louise partial of her name as well (Even though it does belong to alot of royal women). Andrew and Charles are on better terms then when Andrew was teenager. Andrew and Edward are like best friends. I've read about this in various books. But all and all they're sibling like around one another they are like any of us with our siblings so to speak.

I love the photo of Prince Charles and Anne in the library when they were children.

I think Charles and Anne must be close. And it sounds like Anne and Edward may be close as well. I would think Charles and Andrew were closer when they were married since Diana and Fergie probably would have brought them together a lot and they used to vacation together. Does anyone know if they still do that? I don't think Charles and Edward are too close since they have such a HUGE age differance and Charles was already away at school by the time Edward was born.

In earlier years I think that Charles and Edward were as close as possible considering the age difference.

In the TV show 'The Royal Family' shown in 1969 one of my favourite images is of Prince Charles playing the cello for Prince Edward and the string broke and hit Edward in the face. They were laughing a bit afterwards. Charles also wrote some children's stories for Edward.

My other favourite story about them goes back to 1976 and it shows a bit of the personality of both men (assuming that the story as reported by all the press is true). The Queen and Philip had gone to the USA on a State Visit as part of the 200th Anniversary of the 1776 Revolution before heading up to Montreal for the Olympics. Princess Anne was competing so they agreed that Andrew could come over and watch his sister compete. Of course Charles was also going to go and couldn't fly on the same plane as Andrew (being 1st and 2nd in line to the throne). Edward (aged 12) was miffed at being told he had to stay at home rather than watch his sister compete so he threw a tantrum or simply asked Charles and Charles agreed to take him with him feeling that it was unfair that he should miss out. (I have heard both versions of events). I don't think the Queen and Philip were all that pleased at first because Edward had disobeyed them but in the end the family had a good time together and watched proudly as their daughter/sister competed for Great Britain in the equestriatn events.

I believe that they are as close as many families at their respective ages and closer than some because there are things that only they can share - e.g. having their monarch as their mother and living their lives in the public eye.

Yes, I heard that too and can understand it as well. Afterall the press had an agreement with Charles and his family not to hound the young princes while they were still in full time education but Edward's company seemed to think that that didn't apply to them.

I hope Charles and Edward have patched up there differences over that incident and are getting on as well as they can.

I dont know if this is true or not but i read that when diana was younger, she knew prince andrew and they were really good friends and apparently when she was at school she kept pictures of him and told people that she was going to marry him someday. Also ive read that prince andrew and Diana were also very close after the divorce of her and prince charles. I wonder if this could have caused any sibling rivalry

I think there was even plans to get Prince Andrew and Diana married, but then she fell in love with Charles. I think it may worked better if they would have married. I think Prince Andrew was a little disappointed. I read it in book, but I don't know which.

Do members of the royal family socialize with each other?

Obviously, we know they get together for Christmas, Easter etc., but do they get together for non-special occasions? Do you think the Queen and Prince Phillip have been to any of their childrens' homes for dinner? Would Prince Andrew have Sophie and Edward over for a BBQ? Do any of the ladies in the family get together for lunch or shopping?

Of course I can't be 100% certain, but I would say that, no, they don't get together for "non-special" occasions. They like to pursue their own interests and activities in their "off" time.

Well I would have to say no or if they do it's extremely rare. For some reason to me the British RF seems so institutional and business like. They don't seem to be a "real" family. Obviously I have no proof other than the pictures and the occasions in which we see them.

Those great photos of the Princess Royal with her nephew Harry at a football match would say that indeed they do spend time together, and I have to be honest, Princess Anne and Prince Harry would have seemed an unusual (uncomfortable?) duo. Those photos show a couple of fans (albeit royal fans) sharing a great time.

I'm certain I've heard of the Queen and Prince Philip dining at Bagshot Park with the Wessex's on more than one occasion.

Private family dinners at Windsor have also taken place.

Well I think they share private time together. They have to match with each other anyway so probably they are used to it :) And I agree with Madame_Royale, because we've often heard, that the Wessexes and the Queen with Philip enjoy such a good relationship. And I think at least the RF knows that among each other they are private because they can understand how the others feel in this position

I think the private time they spend together would be limited. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "they have to match with each other"?

Having a good relationship with family members doesn't necessarily have to mean socializing together often.
