Peter Phillips Wedding 2008: the Royal Family, Hello! Magazine and "Freebies"

They look good, I don't understand though I thought Hello had the rights to the wedding and now suddenly they weren't allowed in that's strange. BBCWorld just reported it a little while ago.

I doubt very much that the Queen would be selling access to her chapel of St George's to anyone, let alone Hello magazine.

Intresting...this contradicts what BBC said
Hello! Your Majesty: Could the Queen be drawn into the row over her grandson's £500,000 wedding deal? | the Daily Mail
weid guess we'll have to wait and see.

I liked the overall look, it looked like a simple but elegant wedding.

Oh Dear

The Daily Mail thundered: "What a start to married life for Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips - cashing in on the accident of his birth and literally selling his grandmother to Hello! magazine."

I would wager that he had her blessing in that matter. I can't imagine he would've gotten the use of the royal properties for the ceremony and reception if QE2 didn't know about the magazine deal.

Yes, it's really sad that they didn't cash on granny on taking the money from the mail....

From the Daily Mail.

The official royal wedding picture as the Queen boycotts £1/2m deal with Hello! | the Daily Mail

Seems not every member of the royal family were happy with the hello deal.

For a royal wedding, it has struck me as strange that they are getting so little for over 40 page spread, between pre-wedding interview and all.

They supposedly sold the rights to Hello magazine for $1,000,000 so we can only get photos and reportage from Hello.

Was this a mistake for a grandson of the Queen? I know he's not royal but it does seem an awful lack of dignity and decorum to sell the photo rights to your wedding. It makes the royal family seem like a commodity with a price tag on it.

Is Peter Phillips that hard up?

As I read it, it was Autumn whose family couldn't pay for the wedding but Peter's family did not want to take over the costs, thus they negociated a deal.

Just one question. Why would Autumn's family be the ones paying for the wedding? I thought most young people paid for their own with maybe a sub from the parents if they could afford it.

According to Emily Post, it is traditional for the bride's parents to pay for the wedding, but as this is a royal wedding, even though not a state affair, I would hazard a guess that most employed brides would be unable to afford the fees associated with a wedding of this stature. I think the couple also just purchased a home so with everything hitting them, it just was too much. Being a royal would also preclude an elopement, or a destination wedding. I think so many things commoners such as ourselves have opportunities to take advantage of would be frowned upon by this couple. Ultimately, which is worse....not be able to pay for the wedding and be in debt and have the Queen pick up the tab after bad press, or pay for the wedding on your own.

I understand why they did what they did.

As do I. I know a lot of people are doing the "oh how crass" thing, but I bet they don't have the financial constraints that the Phlillips do.

As for "trading on their position"? So what. No one, including all of us on the forums could give a rats about any old wedding. The wedding of one of the Queen's grandchildren is an event, so to all you holier than thou types. . . get over it.

I too thought that is how it's done nowadays. It's they way it's been for three of my siblings and a mjority of friends who have since signed their lives away...

All three were given 25 grand, the in laws parents payed their share and any costs left were picked up by the bride and groom.

What a nice wedding! I really enjoyed it to see all the pics!
But for me it isn“t a great deal to see a royal wedding “sponsored“ by a magazine.

But then that's Peter's job: he is a sponsoring specialist and has been for most of his career. That's how he met Autumn, he worked for the sponsoring department of Williams BMW and she was a hostess at the BMW hospitality suite - hostess mostly to the sponsors and their guests. So of course their view is different and more matter-of-fact. They had something worth sponsoring, they found a sponsor, they agreed on the details and the pact was settled. That's how Peter's working life simply is. The other side of the coin of being the untitled and "normal" grandson of the queen.

William and Harry OTOH won't need another sponsor because the state is going to completely sponsor their weddings....

The job they do is one side their marriage another one, IMO.

Probably you give the explanation for this “sponsoring“ the couple also would tell us, but it does not make it better for me.

I wasn“t delighted some years ago when Zara sold her “story“ with her jockey boy friend to Hello, and now again i“m not happy to see Peter selling his wedding to the magazine.

The wedding at Windsor was a private matter but also a royal one.
Maybe i“m old fashioned, but i don“t think it“s good when royal events are “sponsored “ by the media.
