On This Day: British Royal Family

Today is the anniversary of the Queen's proclamation as Queen and I thought that it would be nice to start an On this Day thread for the family where TRF members could mark important dates in the British Royal Family as their anniversaries appear.

Feb. 8, 1952 - A New Queen is proclaimed

So I'll start with today's important event:

On Feb 8, 1952 exactly 56 years ago from today, a new queen was proclaimed.

The BBC has a really nice write up of the Queen's ascension here:

BBC ON THIS DAY | 8 | 1952: New Queen proclaimed for UK

The Queen opened her speech,

Quote:
"By the sudden death of my dear father I am called to assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty."

On Feb. 24, 1981 the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer announced that they were to wed.

Here is the BBC write up of the event and a videoclip of the engagement couple.

wow, I have not seen that interview for a really long time, it is so weird to watch something like that knowing what was going through her head, and what was to happen. Watching It again I can see how Diana became so popular so fast, what a sweet girl standing there giggling:)

The Princess' name seemed familiar. The article was perfect because it declared: She (Cecily) was named after her paternal grandmother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York.

Along the lines of the War of the Roses, today marks the death of Margaret of Anjou, the last Lancaster queen consort.

After the defeat of their final forces and death of her son, Margaret spent time in the custody of her former lady in waiting, the Duchess of Suffolk. She was later ransomed by her cousin King Louis XI and spent her remaining years in France. She died and was buried with her parents in Anjou.

It is also the 77th anniversary of the death of Prince George, Duke of Kent, the father of the current Duke, Prince Michael and Princess Alexandra.

Prince George who died in an airplane crash when Michael was only seven weeks old, was the first member of the BRF to die in active duty in 450 years.

He was the second child of George V to die, the first of course being John who died at 14. The queen's father would be next a decade later.

What is interesting about Prince Albert is the fact that his first name was not Albert. It was Francis (Franz). Nor did Queen Victoria and Albert ever use Francis in any of the names of their sons.

Franz Albrecht (Augustus Charles Emmanuel). Besides Charles/Karl, he was named for his godfathers. Albrecht was not a middle name, it was his legal first name. Not uncommon for double barrel names in the German houses, nor to go by one or the other. Even when young he went by Albrecht.

Along the lines of Victoria who was christened Alexandrina Victoria.

Neither he nor Victoria used their technical first name for any of their kids.

Among their grandchildren Franz and Alexandra were used. Vicky's son Sigismund was Franz Friedrich (went by his third). He even had a granddaughter named for him. Helena's daughter commonly known as Marie Louise, her first name was Franziska. It was quite common among their grandchildren not to go by their first given name (often not even second). Alexandra/er was more common.

Ah yes, "Her Highness Princess Franziska Josepha Louise Augusta Marie Christina Helena." How on earth did they manage to re-arrange her name to Marie Louise? Her godfather was Emperor Franz Joseph and she was named after him but always called Louie by the family.
