Oh wow as far back as 1972. A goodlooking dashing young man. A young Prince Charles apparently idolised Prince William. Very sad tragic death for Princess Alice and Prince Henry and brother Richard. I saw an interesting documentary about him awhile back.

She liked the name Marie Louise after Napoleon's empress.. she was usualy called Louie..

Is it correct to conclude that Princess Franziska was the person who selected Marie Louise to be called?

It's my understanding her father chose the name. He met the Empress Marie Louise as a boy and developed a crush on her.

The following statement was published in several newspapers I searched in the Findmypast British newspaper database:

"The Lord Chamberlain is authorized to announce that in order to prevent the confusion which has often arisen between her Royal Highness Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, and her Highness Princess Louise Augusta of Schleswig-Holstein, owing to both bearing the same Christian name, the Princess Louise Augusta will for the future be known as her Highness Princess Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein."

Considering her nickname was Louie, a play off Louise, it makes sense she was actually referred to as Louise Augusta prior to that declaration. Not to mention that Louise Augusta are paired in her name, not needing the re-arranging Marie Louise requires.

Part of me wonders why the announcement was made at the time. Marie Louise had returned to England in 1900 and been performing duties. I'd think if it caused enough confusion for such a statement, it would have happened earlier.


August 29 in 1298 Eleanor of England, Countess of Bar, the eldest living daughter of Edward the Longshanks, died in Ghent.

Eleanor was meant to marry Alfonso III of Aragon but due to problems with the Pope and his parents over Sicily, Edward kept delaying any engagement. They were engaged but Alfonso died before they met. She later married Henry III, Count of Bar.

Eleanor's burial at Westminster Abbey has never been discovered ,the date of her burial at the Abbey on October 12th,1298 was recorded but not the location.

I like the fact that Princess Alexandra named a daughter Alexandra Beatrice Leopoldine. This is a very nice way to honor the English royal relatives.

On this day,4th of September 1455 the birth of Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham the son of Humphrey Stafford, Earl of Stafford and Margaret Beaufort.The 2nd Duke of Buckingham married Catherine Woodville sister of queen Elizabeth Woodville.The Duke is also rumored to be one of the main suspects in the disappearance of the Princes in the Tower.

Also on this day,Joan of England, Queen of Sicily and Countess of Toulouse died in 1199 at Fontevrault Abbey in Anjou.Joan was the daughter of Henry II & Eleanor of Aquitaine and the favourite sister of Richard the Lionheart.
Joan was buried at Fontevrault Abbey but her burial was desecrated in 1793 during the French Revolution when the vaults of the Plantagenets was ransacked her tomb was lost.

On this day in ; 5th of September 1451 : Birth of Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence.Isabel was the daughter of Richard,16th Earl of Warwick & Anne de Beauchamp and in 1469 she was married to George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence.The marriage produced 2 surviving children,George 17th Earl of Warwick and Lady Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury.Isabel died shortly after the birth of her son Richard on the 22nd of December 1476,her son Richard died a few weeks later.

Sadly, both of her surviving children were beheaded by the Tudors: Edward by Henry VII at the age of 24 (after he had been imprisoned in The Tower since the age of six and held mostly in solitary confinement) and Margaret at the age of 69(!) by Henry VIII. Her's was badly botched and it took several blows to end her life. Their only real crime was being born Plantagenet.

Yes indeed, George 17th Earl of Warwick was executed by orders of Henry VII in 1499 and Lady Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury went to block thanks to Henry VIII in 1541.

Fortunately despite the untimely fates of Margaret and one of her sons, she did have grandchildren and the family went on in the female line. The earls of Huntingdon are descended from one of her granddaughters. Among other notable families.
