Quick question - is it unusually to not have royal engagements already ? It is now the 11th of June? And only Anne has done one.

It is not unusual at all for there to have only been the one engagement during the first week or so of the year (the Oxford Farming Conference is usually Anne's first for the year). It is unusual for Tim to be with her of course as she normally goes in person rather than via video meaning he could be with her, presumably at Gatcombe.

There are some quite long periods with very few engagements throughout the year and from mid-December to the end of January is one of them along with August and September. August is the slowest month with usually only about 30 from the entire family.

Things will pick up a bit over the next few weeks. Sophie, for instance, is in QATAR so will do a few there.

Usually at this time they are also meetings or other inside events.

I have also noted that Zara attended the New Year's Day meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse - not in the Court Circular - but perhaps should be included in "engagements"?

Zara works at the Cheltenham Racecourse, so no, it is not an engagement but her day job.

A new year and a new 'sheet' for the royals - thanks to your work!

I was just wondering what the criteria are for being included on your list? For example, why are Andrew, Harry and Andrew still on the list? And why is Jack on the list but not Edo? And what about Lady Louise who turned 18 a a few months ago? The Duchess of Kent is also missing but that makes sense as she doesn't do royal engagement anymore but that seems to apply to others on the list as well.

For simplicity's sake, it seems Catherine can be included with the 40s for the year as she didn't have any engagements before her birthday...

Zara is not a royal. The only ones included are those with HRH or married to an HRH.

The CC records the official engagements and those only. Zara doesn't do official engagements, other than the very big events such as Philip's funeral last year. Many royals who attend the races will be in the CC e.g. The Queen going to Ascot ... but none of the others who go to Ascot are there officially.

It would be impossible to include all the 'unofficial duties' that people do and for many going to the races isn't a 'duty' but a fun day out.

My criteria is all HRHs and their spouses. Edo is on the list - he did one engagement last year - Philip's funeral, the same as Jack and Harry etc.

Regardless of when a person's birthday is I only move them from the 'o' to the new 'o' on their birthday which is why the mention of her being in the 30s until the 8th January and the 40s from the 9th. That mention also only takes place in the week in which the 'o' birthday takes place so next week she will only appear in the 40s. Later in the year William will have one week where he will be in both lists and then move to the 40s list only.

Lady Louise isn't HRH. If she ever decided to take up HRH and undertake royal duties she would be on the list.

The Duchess of Kent is on the list because she is HRH. She may not do many duties these days, although I would expect her to attend the church service for the Jubilee later this year, if well enough.

My list will always grow as the year unfolds as different royals undertake duties.

The official list on the British monarchy website includes those who are or ever have been working royals. It allows people to say check what Andrew did on a given day, before he stood down. The Queen Mother was on the list for about a decade after her death as you need them on the list to be able to search for their engagements. These days, to search for Princess Margaret or the Queen Mother, on the British Monarchy website you would have to read the years from 1997 - to their deaths, unless you already have a specific date.

Weekly Update to 16th January, 2022

A few more engagement this week but some of the BRF are yet to get ‘back to work’ after their winter break. The last engagements in 2021 was carried out on the 17th December by The Princess Royal and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. People like The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge haven’t carried out an official engagement for even longer (since 15th December for The Duchess of Cornwall and since 14th December for The Duchess of Cambridge). Meanwhile the rest of the country was still working hard until very close to Christmas and has been back at work since very early in January.

The optics have to be considered and the lack of work for months at a time is something that they do need to address. Most of the population get six weeks leave a year but the royal it is close to four months or even more.

Even when ‘working’ most, including The Princess Royal only do official engagements on about 150 – 200 days a year. It is all very well arguing that they ‘prepare’ for engagements … when we have heard from a number of aids that they are given briefing notes in the car on the way to the engagement to read and some don’t even bother … or that they are working with their patronages ‘behind the scenes’. The public need to have that recorded more often if there aren’t going to be calls for a full re-assessment of the royals in time.

I use The Times for my source for the CC and I have often seen comments complaining about how little the royal seem to do … even on a busy day with 20 or so engagements spread across 8+ royals. I know The Times readership has changed a bit over the years but when that readership is questioning the value for money and the lack of apparent work … as recorded in the CC … then the royals do need to start to look at what they are doing. A fit healthy 40 year old woman should be doing a lot more than a man into his late 70s or even one in his 80s and The Duchess of Cambridge (117) barely did more than The Dukes of Gloucester (112) and Kent (81).

I wonder if Zara and Mike Tindall are mentioned in the CC after attending a Platinum Jubilee event, whether they will be included in your table.

Mike and Zara were included last year for Philip's funeral and will be again this year if mentioned in the CC for any event e.g. Mike had two engagements in the CC last year - the funeral and an event he did with the Duchess of Gloucester.

The 'non-HRH's feature so rarely they don't go in the 'week-by-week' count but only in a special listing at the end of the year if at all given how rarely they are mentioned.

Even the HRHs who only attended the funeral and no other events were only included in the week after the funeral and in the end of year summary but not each week.

Basically the week-to-week list is:

HM The Queen
HRH The Prince of Wales
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall
HRH The Duke of Cambridge
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge
HRH The Earl of Wessex
HRH The Countess of Wessex
HRH The Princess Royal
Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence (the only non-HRH on a weekly basis)
HRH The Duke of Gloucester
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester
HRH The Duke of Kent
HRH Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy.

The others are in the spreadsheet but really only do the big events, or the occasional event with another royal, that I don't include them most weeks.

Many of the others also do 'unofficial engagements' that when done by one of the above would have been in the CC but for someone like say Beatrice or Eugenie aren't but, if I am informed, I will include that in my 'unofficial listing'.

Weekly Update to 23rd January, 2022

All working royals have now done at least one engagement other than The Queen. It is not unusual for her to do very few in January – usually a visit to the WI at Sandringham and to an RAF base. Whether she will do either of these while at Sandringham we will have to wait and see.

Weekly Update to 6th February, 2022

The Queen has finally returned to official engagements. That means that all the ‘working royals’ have now done at least two engagements in 2022.

The Princess Royal and Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence went to the Rugby on Saturday, which saw Scotland defeat England in the first game since HRH The Duchess of Cambridge took over as Patron of the Rugby Football Union. However The Duchess of Cambridge didn’t attend the match. It is normal for The Princess Royal and her husband to attend all matches played by Scotland, whether in Scotland, the UK, Ireland, France or Italy but rare for the other patrons to attend more than one match during the Six Nations.

Weekly Update to 13th February, 2022

The Princess Royal and Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence went to the Rugby on Saturday to watch Scotland play Wales. Once again the patrons of neither England nor Wales attended a match. I suspect that they will only attend the England/Wales match while The Princess Royal and Vice-Admiral Laurence will continue to attend all of Scotland’s matches.

The Duke of Cambridge visited the UAE to attend Expo 2020.

The Queen did have a ‘in person’ audience with the PM it seems … only the second since March, 2020 (other than the ones in Scotland when he visits for his weekend at Balmoral).

Sorry about the delay for this week.

My GP has changed my heart medication from what my specialist gave me (refusing to give me a prescription for what the specialist wants me to have as it requires government approval ... which I have had in the past). As a result I am now on no heart medication at all until I see the specialist in April (he is overseas from now until early April) and the medication the GP wants me on causes pains in the chest, which I have been advised, via email from my specialist to not take again.

So I am falling asleep at all sorts of times and struggling to concentrate for more than about five minutes at a time.

I will get it up either later today or tomorrow.

That sounds not good. Hope all will be well with you especially in this uncertain period until your specialist will be back.
