Question for anyone in the UK with access to the PRINT version of The Times.

Has there been anything in there about The Times not running The CC anymore?

The last two days, the online version of The Times hasn't had the CC while the British Monarchy website has listed engagements for both days.

It is weird - if I search specifically for it it appears but it used to come up directly under Register. The 5th appeared on the 7th but not on the 6th and the 6th still isn't available even though the rest of the paper for the 7th is - normally the 6th would be there when the 7th goes up.

I hope I am making sense because The Times isn't.

It seems I may be back to relying on the British monarchy website - which can be slow at putting events up.

The Times online hasn't had an entry since the 5th March and I had to search for that as it wasn't under 'Register' where I normally find it.

The British monarchy website has nothing since the 6th March but I know that the King and Queen Consort were in Colchester later than that.

I have no idea why The Times online isn't putting it up anymore. I don't know whether it is still in the print edition. If it isn't then it is a very sad day as it is the end of a tradition dating back to the beginning of the CC in 1788.

Got the answer:

No longer in the online version but in the 'e' version which is an electronic copy of the printed version. Harder to find but still possible.

Other disadvantage is no comments possible on the 'e' version as there is on the online version.

For anyone interested here is the link to the 'e' version https://epaper.thetimes.co.uk/app/THETIM

I have received a reply to my enquiry about the CC from the online Times (and I was one of a number who complained via their comments on other articles and I am sure not the only one to email them). I have been told it will be back 'by popular demand' which is certainly better than the e-version which is very hard to read and when more than two or three entries couldn't be copied and pasted into my word document, which is one of the records I have. It took me nearly two hours earlier today to type the 9th March entry as it was half a page across 5 columns - when it is on the website it would take about 10 seconds to copy it across and then adjust to my way of having it set out.

Yippee - popular demand won and the CC is back in the online Times.

Today's entries are the usual sort of thing but there is also this one:

St James’s Palace
Today is the Anniversary of the Birthday of The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh this afternoon attended a Reception at Edinburgh City Chambers, 253 High Street, Edinburgh, in support of members of the Ukrainian community and were received by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh (Councillor Robert Aldridge, the Rt Hon the Lord Provost).

The first time their names are in the CC under those titles (and yes my analysis will report the change next week with both Earl/Countess of Wessex until 9th and then Duke/Duchess from the 10th, and even James will be adjusted in my analysis from Viscount Severn to Earl of Wessex even though he hasn't done anything yet this year. Where his name appears under his title that will change for him from the 10th March.

Weekly Update to 12th March, 2023

Sorry for the delay. I was on a cruise and while on the ship I saved everything to my back-up hard drive, which I then have managed to leave on the ship. The company have the drive and arranged to post it to me from Adelaide, but it has taken over a week since it was posted to reach me. Then I have had to process everything but will be ‘up to date’ by Monday I hope. I have also had visitors for most of the time since I arrived home so no real time to do things. Then, when I started to fix things I realised I hadn’t adjusted everything for the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh (just adding columns etc) but it all takes time.

I am quite surprised with the total number for Sir Timothy Laurence: only his wife and the king have more engagements (although in number of days the prince and princess of Wales and the queen consort still surpass him). That's quite a change from previous years.

Tim accompanied Anne on her visit to NZ and Australia which is why his numbers are up. He always accompanies her to the rugby and the races. He does no engagements alone of course.

The way of counting is very selective and "creative". The Princess Royal has seen or greeted 13 politicans, or ambassadors, or high commissioners, and her husband 9, and - as it should be in their strictly a-politic role - this is no more than "nice to meet you".

But this is enlisted as a Royal Engagement and gosh... isn't she a hardworking gal? In two-and-a-half month no less 133 "Engagements" while the year is only 75 days young. When the Princess did attend one engagement with 10 high commissioners and she has greeted them, this counts as "10 meetings with politicians, or ambassadors, or high commissioners". Yeah, veeeeery creative counting!

That isn't the way I count at all. One engagement meeting with more than one high commissioner is ONE engagement.

The Princess Royal regularly undertakes 4 - 5 engagements a day when she does engagements recorded in the CC and often in multiple cities.

This is the entry in the CC for The Princess Royal for the 22nd March:

Palace of Holyroodhouse
The Princess Royal, Patron, UK Harbour Masters Association, this afternoon attended the Thirtieth Anniversary Spring Conference at the John McIntyre Conference Centre, 18 Holyrood Park Road, Edinburgh, and was received by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh (Councillor Robert Aldridge, the Rt Hon the Lord Provost).

Her Royal Highness, Honorary Patron, the Scotland Malawi Partnership, later attended a Youth and Schools Festival at Edinburgh City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh.

The Princess Royal, Patron, Scotland’s Churches Trust, afterwards received Colonel James Erskine at the Palace of Holyroodhouse upon relinquishing his appointment as Chairman and Professor Adam Cumming upon assuming the appointment.

Her Royal Highness, Past Master, the Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh, this evening launched the Community Grants Scheme at the Merchants’ Hall, 22 Hanover Street, and was received by Mr Peter Hillier (Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh).

The Princess Royal, Chancellor, the University of Edinburgh, subsequently held a Student Enterprise Dinner at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

FIVE engagements:

1. Conference at a Conference Centre
2. Festival at the Edinburgh City Chambers
3. Received a person at Holyrood Palace
4. Launched a Scheme a the Merchants Hall
5. Hosted a Dinner at Holyrood Palace

That is a normal day for The Princess Royal.

She has done an overseas visit which is why she is so high with Ambassadors/High Commissioners/Politicians etc as when she was visiting NZ and Australia she was often escorted by either the Prime Minister, The GG or the High Commissioner (just as Charles III was escorted by the German President and/or Chancellor and William had a meeting with the President of Poland). These are necessarily a sit down and talk but could be was accompanied by them while they did something such as lay a wreath.

The Princess Royal has undertaken engagements on 52 days this year (out of the 87 days I have so far analysed - which is also more than anyone else).

I am scrupulous that engagements have to be clearly separate and not different events at the same engagement to count. Sometimes an engagement might have more detail and so come under as more under 'type' but not the total e.g. Charles' visit to the Royal Needlework school included a tour, meeting people and viewing - one engagement but three types of things being done.

The King and The Queen Consort this afternoon arrived at Berlin-Brandenburg Government Airport and were received by His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany (Her Excellency Mrs Jill Gallard), the Ambassador from the Federal Republic of Germany to the Court of St James’s (Mr Miguel Berger), Mrs Dφrte Dinger (State Secretary of the Federal President’s Office) and Mr Till Knorn (Chief of Protocol of the Federal Foreign Office).

This is the entry in the CC for the arrival of the King and Queen Consort in Germany - ONE engagement but a number of different entries for the overall analysis:

Type of Engagements - arrived, received by.

Met with politicians etc - HM Ambassador TO Germany and FROM Germany to Britain - so two meetings with politicians etc but the actual engagement count will be ONE for both the King and the Queen Consort.

I analyse the engagement to show the range of things that the royals do but I do not count an engagement as more than one because they did more than one thing during the engagement.

The reason why there are separate sections is to show the detail. I could just give the first count - just the plain count - without the detail. Many years ago I asked people what they wanted and this is the result.

I suggest in future you don't bother reading my posts as you only want to find fault. There is nothing creative - and at the end of the year I am usually very close to the 'official' total figures published in The Times by Mr O'Donovan who has been doing this since the early 1980s.
