Weekly Update to 25th June, 2023

I know there were lots of images of royals attending Royal Ascot. Officially however only The King and Queen attended each day. This was the same with the late Queen who, at the end of her reign, would list herself and The Duke of Edinburgh. Last year, when she didn’t attend no one attended officially.

Weekly Update to 30th July, 2023

The family is moving into summer holiday mode with very few engagements now especially for the Wales who normally do nothing official while the children are on school holidays. There may be the odd official event and we may see them doing things but those two things aren’t necessary the same thing.

Are we likely to see an increase in William's workload over the coming year? He is currently on around a third of the number of engagements of Charles and Anne, although obviously he does have a young family to focus on too.

I suppose he may increase but I have read that he and Catherine want to do things differently with a focus on a couple of areas and not the 100s of patronages that Charles' generation had.

I think he wants to go back to the sort of workload that was expected prior to WWII when the royals didn't do anywhere near the numbers we are used to seeing.

In 1954 (the year I am currently analysing) I have just finished October and so far only Elizabeth II, Philip and the Duke of Gloucester have topped 100 with Elizabeth over 400 and Philip over 200 and they had younger children than William and Catherine have now.

Even then the sheer number of engagements that are listed as 'arrived at xxxxx palace' or 'left xxxxx castle' is amazing along with 'drove to xxxx'. Even though it is October and a Coronation year as well as a funeral of a senior royal (Queen Mary) the total is less than 1400 with about 100 the sort of engagements listed above.

They did a lot fewer visits and a lot more inside the palaces.

It was really Philip that changed the idea to the royals, other than the monarch, being out and about.

A comparison of the number of royals is that the majority of the work of the royals was being done by those in their 20s and 30s with virtually none done by those over 70 while in 2023 about 60% is being done by those over 70 with those in their 40s happy to do about 100 - 200 for the year and of course there are none in their 20s or 30s.

I hate it when I read that William and Catherine and Edward and Sophie are 'stepping up' when in fact they aren't doing more than they have ever done.

The late Queen's cousins contribute a combined 15% of the engagements carried out by the BRF. This is roughly what Charles and Anne each carry out. How necessary is the presence of the Gloucesters, Alexandra and Duke of Kent to the BRF? Would the retirement of any of them have a noticeable impact on the workload of the BRF, particularly as there is no-one yet to replace them? (Yes I realise the Gloucesters aren't much older than Charles.)

Actually the Duke of Gloucester is four and a half years older than King Charles. That is quite a gap when you consider that the Duke will be 80 next year. And health becomes much more important in your eighties. Nobody goes on for ever.
And Prss Alexandra’s health has not been good for several years.

I actually don’t believe that the retirement of any or all of them would make much difference. Their patronages etc would have to be let go I suspect with the exception of the Duke of Kent’s military ones. The media would probably make a bit of a fuss about a shrunken royal family. However, few Britons know much about them or would recognise them in the street.

The King is happy to have them and with the Duke of Gloucester doing more than the Prince of Wales maybe there is a need until the Wales decide to up their work load, assuming they ever do.

The 'smaller royal family' is happening but isn't a matter of the King sacking older family members who wish to continue serving the monarchy and country.

No doubt the Gloucester's and Kent's will continue to drop their numbers but they will retire when THEY want to do so. Agism is as offensive as any other discrimination.

The problem going forward is no young royals for another 20 or so years by which time there may only be a couple in their late 50s doing all the work. Currently the working royals are all middle-aged or old with only four under 70.

Out of interest, how old were William and Harry when they started taking on their very first patronages and doing their first solo engagements? Presumably this was well before they became full time royals.

It depends what is meant by official patronages and engagements I suppose. Harry started off his charity Sentebale as a teenager of 19. His first official engagement was I believe in 2008 as a 23 year old when he had an engagement at a hospital in Wales and was pictured cuddling a sick baby during the visit.

Out of interest, how old were William and Harry when they started taking on their very first patronages and doing their first solo engagements? Presumably this was well before they became full time royals.

William was doing solo visits as early as 2005 and his first, from what I can find in the CC was overseas. He was in New Zealand in July 2005 when the bombs went off in London (he went for the Lions Rugby tour but also undertook a few solo engagements such as laying a wreath on behalf of the late Queen to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.)

Harry's first solo engagement came in 2007 in London followed very quickly by an official visit to Lesotho for Sentabele.

The number they did, in total from 2001 - 2010 takes about 10 pages of the CC and that includes large family lists such as Trooping the Colour, the Queen Mum's funeral, QEII's Jubilee events and Charles and Camilla's wedding.

All up in their 20s they are averaging about 10 - 15 a year and not really starting full time duties until their mid-30s (William was 35 when he left the air rescue to be only a working royal and Harry was 31).

George won't be given that luxury, however. He may very well have to step up when he is 18 - on finishing school although I do hope he is allowed to have a full university experience but given the 'smaller royal family' and the fact that there are no working royals under 40 I am not sure they will be able to allow him that if they want the royal system to continue.

Weekly Update to 20th August, 2023

There were no engagements by any member of the BRF during this past week according to the CC.

Remember that going to church is 99% of the time not regarded as an official engagement. There has to be a 'reason' for the service e.g. a Jubilee or a Memorial service and not just a regular service for it to be included with a list of attendees. Sometimes the CC will say 'divine service was held at xxxxx church' but no list of who attended, if any did.

Weekly Update to 27th August, 2023

Although the photos of the event at Balmoral on Saturday showed Queen Camilla there alongside The King only Charles III was listed in the CC as attending the event.

Weekly Update to 3rd September, 2023

Although the photos of the event at Braemar showed The Princess Royal and Vice-Admiral Laurence in attendance the CC did not record them attending. Interesting that The King and Queen were listed as attending as the late Queen, at some point in her reign, stopped recording it as such (she did in the early years but not in later ones but I don’t know, yet, which year was the last year it was so recorded and I suspect it might be 2001 – a lot of things started to change with what was recorded and what wasn’t after the death of The Queen Mother).

There will be a delay this week.

Last Sunday I jammed my thumb in the car door and didn't think anything about it but today it was still so sore I went to the Drs. I was immediately sent to get an x-ray which has come back with a break so my left hand is now in a cast.

Typing is thus a very slow process and the left thumb is still quite sore.

Dr said the pain should start to subside now that it is in the cast and so shouldn't be sore come Saturday or Sunday.

It has taken me about 20 minutes to type this one handed - as a touch-typist I find it extremely hard to use my right hand to type what I normally type with the left.

Will try to get this past week up by Sunday night and then get back on track on Monday/Tuesday but if it becomes too painful will need to stop.

Ouch! May it heal quickly and the pain subside really soon. How did you get your thumb jammed in the door?

I was closing the door just as my dog jumped so tried to get him out and the door closed - just a freak thing.

The door caught the thumb where it joins with the hand and that is where the break is - doesn't seem as if any other bones are broken but it is quite painful but it will get better and the pain should really start to subside now that the cast is on and I can't move the thumb at all.

I apologise if these are questions you have already answered elsewhere on the thread but:

With Edward and Sophie's league table numbers, are these just their engagements as Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh or do they also include the engagements they undertook this year as Earl and Countess of Wessex?

Also, has Tim ever had over 100 engagements before (I'm assuming he will pass the 100 mark before the end of the year)? That's quite a lot for someone who technically is not a working royal.

Thanks for taking the time to answer and, again, I apologise if you've answered these questions previously.
