I have received a reply to my enquiry about the CC from the online Times (and I was one of a number who complained via their comments on other articles and I am sure not the only one to email them). I have been told it will be back 'by popular demand' which is certainly better than the e-version which is very hard to read and when more than two or three entries couldn't be copied and pasted into my word document, which is one of the records I have. It took me nearly two hours earlier today to type the 9th March entry as it was half a page across 5 columns - when it is on the website it would take about 10 seconds to copy it across and then adjust to my way of having it set out.

Yippee - popular demand won and the CC is back in the online Times.

Today's entries are the usual sort of thing but there is also this one:

St James’s Palace
Today is the Anniversary of the Birthday of The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh this afternoon attended a Reception at Edinburgh City Chambers, 253 High Street, Edinburgh, in support of members of the Ukrainian community and were received by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh (Councillor Robert Aldridge, the Rt Hon the Lord Provost).

The first time their names are in the CC under those titles (and yes my analysis will report the change next week with both Earl/Countess of Wessex until 9th and then Duke/Duchess from the 10th, and even James will be adjusted in my analysis from Viscount Severn to Earl of Wessex even though he hasn't done anything yet this year. Where his name appears under his title that will change for him from the 10th March.

Sorry for the delay. I was on a cruise and while on the ship I saved everything to my back-up hard drive, which I then have managed to leave on the ship. The company have the drive and arranged to post it to me from Adelaide, but it has taken over a week since it was posted to reach me. Then I have had to process everything but will be ‘up to date’ by Monday I hope. I have also had visitors for most of the time since I arrived home so no real time to do things. Then, when I started to fix things I realised I hadn’t adjusted everything for the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh (just adding columns etc) but it all takes time.

I am quite surprised with the total number for Sir Timothy Laurence: only his wife and the king have more engagements (although in number of days the prince and princess of Wales and the queen consort still surpass him). That's quite a change from previous years.

Tim accompanied Anne on her visit to NZ and Australia which is why his numbers are up. He always accompanies her to the rugby and the races. He does no engagements alone of course.

The way of counting is very selective and "creative". The Princess Royal has seen or greeted 13 politicans, or ambassadors, or high commissioners, and her husband 9, and - as it should be in their strictly a-politic role - this is no more than "nice to meet you".

But this is enlisted as a Royal Engagement and gosh... isn't she a hardworking gal? In two-and-a-half month no less 133 "Engagements" while the year is only 75 days young. When the Princess did attend one engagement with 10 high commissioners and she has greeted them, this counts as "10 meetings with politicians, or ambassadors, or high commissioners". Yeah, veeeeery creative counting!

That isn't the way I count at all. One engagement meeting with more than one high commissioner is ONE engagement.

The Princess Royal regularly undertakes 4 - 5 engagements a day when she does engagements recorded in the CC and often in multiple cities.

This is the entry in the CC for The Princess Royal for the 22nd March:

Palace of Holyroodhouse
The Princess Royal, Patron, UK Harbour Masters Association, this afternoon attended the Thirtieth Anniversary Spring Conference at the John McIntyre Conference Centre, 18 Holyrood Park Road, Edinburgh, and was received by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh (Councillor Robert Aldridge, the Rt Hon the Lord Provost).

Her Royal Highness, Honorary Patron, the Scotland Malawi Partnership, later attended a Youth and Schools Festival at Edinburgh City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh.

The Princess Royal, Patron, Scotland’s Churches Trust, afterwards received Colonel James Erskine at the Palace of Holyroodhouse upon relinquishing his appointment as Chairman and Professor Adam Cumming upon assuming the appointment.

Her Royal Highness, Past Master, the Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh, this evening launched the Community Grants Scheme at the Merchants’ Hall, 22 Hanover Street, and was received by Mr Peter Hillier (Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh).

The Princess Royal, Chancellor, the University of Edinburgh, subsequently held a Student Enterprise Dinner at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

FIVE engagements:

1. Conference at a Conference Centre
2. Festival at the Edinburgh City Chambers
3. Received a person at Holyrood Palace
4. Launched a Scheme a the Merchants Hall
5. Hosted a Dinner at Holyrood Palace

That is a normal day for The Princess Royal.

She has done an overseas visit which is why she is so high with Ambassadors/High Commissioners/Politicians etc as when she was visiting NZ and Australia she was often escorted by either the Prime Minister, The GG or the High Commissioner (just as Charles III was escorted by the German President and/or Chancellor and William had a meeting with the President of Poland). These are necessarily a sit down and talk but could be was accompanied by them while they did something such as lay a wreath.

The Princess Royal has undertaken engagements on 52 days this year (out of the 87 days I have so far analysed - which is also more than anyone else).

I am scrupulous that engagements have to be clearly separate and not different events at the same engagement to count. Sometimes an engagement might have more detail and so come under as more under 'type' but not the total e.g. Charles' visit to the Royal Needlework school included a tour, meeting people and viewing - one engagement but three types of things being done.

The King and The Queen Consort this afternoon arrived at Berlin-Brandenburg Government Airport and were received by His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany (Her Excellency Mrs Jill Gallard), the Ambassador from the Federal Republic of Germany to the Court of St James’s (Mr Miguel Berger), Mrs Dörte Dinger (State Secretary of the Federal President’s Office) and Mr Till Knorn (Chief of Protocol of the Federal Foreign Office).

This is the entry in the CC for the arrival of the King and Queen Consort in Germany - ONE engagement but a number of different entries for the overall analysis:

Type of Engagements - arrived, received by.

Met with politicians etc - HM Ambassador TO Germany and FROM Germany to Britain - so two meetings with politicians etc but the actual engagement count will be ONE for both the King and the Queen Consort.

I analyse the engagement to show the range of things that the royals do but I do not count an engagement as more than one because they did more than one thing during the engagement.

The reason why there are separate sections is to show the detail. I could just give the first count - just the plain count - without the detail. Many years ago I asked people what they wanted and this is the result.

I suggest in future you don't bother reading my posts as you only want to find fault. There is nothing creative - and at the end of the year I am usually very close to the 'official' total figures published in The Times by Mr O'Donovan who has been doing this since the early 1980s.

Thank you, Iluvbertie.

A question if you don't mind: when a royal records something (video message, podcast, interview, etc which I'm sure even for 5 minutes video will take more than that to record), is it considered as an engagement in CC?

I just thought that the "I have to be seen to be believed" mantra in KCIII's reign would surely translate differently with the existence of internet compared to QEII's early reign in which it basically meant to "showing up everywhere cutting ribbon" (which reflected in the number of engagements).

Video messages etc aren't in the CC.

The CC records when they actually have direct contact with another person related to the reason for the contact, even if by video or phone, but not if they do something that can be played later.

Even things like the King's Christmas message (or the Queen's in the past) or other times the late Queen addressed the nation weren't listed. So a podcast or interview isn't an official engagement and so not counted. All those various documentaries done over the years for the late Queen weren't official engagements.

I suppose an engagements means real time engaging with the public rather than something that a person can access when or where they wish to do so.

If only succession was based upon merit, not order of birth or gender, the Princess Royal would be Queen today.

Without taking anything away from the Princess Royals whom I admire greatly - although I was rather scared of her - engagements counts are a poor and deceiving way to judge dedication, commitment and in turn value.
All the royal work more then the standard working hours of the UK - and yes that included the Kents. There is many hours of talking to people in offices, on telephone and Zoom that is not recorded here. There is prep work, trainings and admin work that is done by the royals themselves.
The Princess Royals simply perfers to be out of the offfice to do stuff - and packs her days accordingly. Another royal attempted this - but was soon winded by the three engagement. To each their own.
This type of engagement blitz in regions will however be coming to an end. William perfers thematic visits that focus on one cause - so it will be depth specific and make what his office is calling - longer impact visits.

A lot of the meetings, even via zoom are included here.

Meetings via phone link are exactly that - a phone call.
Meetings via video link are zoom calls.

Same with 'spoke by phone link' or 'spoke via video link'.

Engagement counts are a very good way to judge the work level as each engagement takes a lot of preparation and therefore the more engagements a person does the more preparation a person has to do behind the scenes.

The Princess Royal has to do the same amount of office work per engagement as others do and as she does so many engagements she does a lot of office work as preparation for the many engagements and all the charities with which she works.

Trying to argue that the Princess Royal 'prefers to be out of the office to do stuff' ignores the fact that she turns up fully prepared and that means hours of in office stuff as well.

Weekly Update to 7th May, 2023

This is my report for the week including the Coronation Saturday and Sunday. I have included in my calculations anyone who is a grandchild of a sovereign. I didn’t count Prince Louis for the concert even though the CC said he attended. That CC was literally published within an hour or so of the concert ending so it seems the intention was he would attend.

Although we saw Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attending the ‘Big Lunch’ they weren’t credited in the CC and so that will be listed in their unofficial engagements for the year when I do the final report in December.

Just a reminder - this is MY way of calculating the numbers and is not in any way an official count. If you disagree with my way of counting and reporting engagements - do your own.

MISSING DAYS from the CC on the British Monarch Website:

26th - 15th March - 458/1015 (45.1%) engagements missing

What is weird is that these engagements were there when I did the week on week check, but I needed to go back and look at something only to find that the entirety of February as well as the last week of January and the first two weeks of March are now missing.

It seems that if a small period is searched for sometimes it will come up and not others e.g. when I go to the CC and just go to the last entry it is showing the 7th May but when I want from the 8th May, 2022 to the 8th May 2023 it stops at the 5th May - weird.

Milestones achieved this week: HRH The Princess of Wales (53) reached her half-century for the year while HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh (101) reached her century since the beginning of the year. HRH The Princess Royal (191) reached her double century and HRH The Duke of Gloucester (55) also reached his half-century.

Approaching a milestone: HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh (45) is approaching her half century since becoming The Duchess of Edinburgh and HRH The Duchess of Gloucester (40) is approaching her half-century.

I really do think that Princess Alexandra will decide to retire at some point this year. She was looking very frail at the Coronation, and in one photo of alll the working royals, was being supported to stand up by Edward and Sophie.

Weekly Update to 14th May, 2023

Just a note - any ‘non-working’ royal have now been removed but their engagement and percentages etc are in the calculations and will be included in the annual report. If they undertake another engagement they will be put in for that week. That is most likely to be Trooping the Colour.

I know that many ‘news’ reports said that Louis’s ‘first’ official engagement was the Big Help Out. That is incorrect. His name has been in the CC on three occasions before this and he wasn’t listed as attending this event along with his parents. George and Charlotte also didn’t attend officially.

Just a reminder - this is MY way of calculating the numbers and is not in any way an official count. If you disagree with my way of counting and reporting engagements - do your own.

*The Duchess of Edinburgh visited Iraq. The CC simply said she did ‘engagements’ in Baghdad/Erbil, Iraq and gave two dates for each place. As it said engagements - plural - I have given her two engagements for each day. Should the CC even do an addendum with more accurate information I will be able to correct but this is all I can do when this is how the CC records things.

Thank you as always Iluvbertie for all the work you undertake to compile this info. I'm just curious as to why we don't see the visits to Canada reflected. The Duke of Edinburgh carried out engagements in Toronto and Vancouver in April, and The Princess Royal was in New Brunswick in May.

They were reported in the week that they happened e.g. in the week ending 21st May The Princess Royal's visit to Canada was the only overseas visit recorded as she was the only overseas visitor during that week.

Due to the limits on the number of characters in a post with things like overseas visits the weekly update is only for those in that week but I still have them in my report.

When I do my end of year report each person's overseas visits will be there.

It is also why I only include the palaces/churches for the past week as well as types of engagements and patronages etc.

Ahhhh! That makes sense. Thanks so much!
