British Royal Family Engagements 2020
Weekly Update to 9th January, 2020
Welcome to the new year and another series of posts analyzing the BRF and their official engagements.
Just a reminder. I only use the Court Circular so even though we may see royals out and about if what they were doing isn’t listed BY NAME in the CC then it isn’t counted here e.g. the Queen, William and Catherine’s attendance at church last Sunday (CC said ‘divine service was held … and no listing of who attended) and Harry and Meghan’s visit to Canada House was also not mentioned in the CC.
I will only start new sections as people start to do them as well as only include a royal once they have done an officially recognised duty in the CC.

HM The Queen – 1 (7.7%)
HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 3 (23.1%)

*William ‘received’ the Master of the Honourable Company on the 9th. Why this is worth mentioning, I think, is that Andrew would have been doing this in the past as he was Grand Master. This could be a sign that William is going to take it over or that William is simply taking on some of Andrew’s commitments rather than having the engagement cancelled. There may be many reasons of course. This is the first time I have seen an Andrew association being connected with someone else since he stood down last November.

Weekly Update to 16th January, 2020
Sorry for the delay but you may have heard that as well as massive bush fires Australia has been hit with storms resulting in flash floods. The volunteer force that works in that area is the SES (State Emergency Service). I belong to my local unit and I have spent the past four days working largely in the logistical area of putting together ‘teams’ ensuring that no RFS guys are also asked to double up and go straight into SES work. We really want them to get a rest knowing that the fire season isn’t over yet. It was a long weekend but we have now put together the required ‘new’ teams and I am able to return to a ‘normal life’ with only occasional needs to go into the office and work there.
As usual the second week of the year does see an increase in the number of royals back to work with most now having returned. The Kent’s haven’t but as the Duke is 84 and Princess Alexandra is 83 I think we can forgive them for taking a bit longer. I am not counting Meghan due to the recent announcement.
MISSING DAYS: Yes – 16 DAYS into the year and the online British Monarchy website is ‘missing days’ already.
January – 13th and 14th – engagements missed – 13

HRH The Duke of Gloucester – 3 (5.6%)
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester – 2 (1 – up 1 – 3.7%)
*I am referring to Harry the way he is referenced in the CC. When he appears with something other than HRH The Duke of Sussex I will change to that … as I did in 2018 when he went from HRH Prince Henry of Wales to HRH The Duke of Sussex

One of the interesting things about ‘where engagements’ happen, I have noticed in reading the Future Engagements page are that there are some engagements planned for Bagshot Park such as dinners. When these events did take place the CC didn’t record a place. They were simply under the heading of St James’ Palace, which is where Edward’s office is and so that is where I have located the lunch and dinner. I wonder why the FE specified Bagshot when the CC decided not to specify anywhere?
Buckingham Palace – 1
St James’ Palace – 5
Kensington Palace – 9
Sandringham House – 2
Birkhall – 3*
*Charles and Camilla had three engagements listed under Clarence House but they are also referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay which they only use when in Scotland so I have taken an educated guess and given these events to Birkhall. Normally the CC indicates if the event is moved to Dumfries House.

No apologies necessary in my opinion as you were certainly needed for this vital volunteer work. I'm hoping that the recent rain in parts of Australia is offering some relief though of course flooding is always a concern after a fire.

Weekly Update to 23rd January, 2020
The weeks are flying by … and the royals are almost all back to work. The Kent’s still haven’t done anything officially although both the Duke and Princess Alexandra have events in the FE for next week.
Both Charles and Sophie have been overseas, while Camilla is scheduled to go to Poland for her most high profile solo event since marrying Charles - the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Weekly Update to 30th January, 2020
Another week has gone by. Interestingly Princess Alexandra still hasn’t appeared this year – despite the fact that she was expected to do one during this past week. She does have one scheduled for the 6th February and a few more in the coming weeks so I do hope she completes these activities otherwise questions will start being raised about her health I am sure.
Camilla carried out her first major solo overseas visit extremely well, I thought, when she went to Poland on Monday. The Cambridges and Edward also attended Holocaust Memorial events in the UK on Monday.

What engagement did Princess Alexandra miss? I’m curious, since she did go to the Mozart concert with the Gloucesters on the 27th so she doesn’t seem ill.

That event wasn't in the CC or the FE. I read of one in the FE but didn't record it about a week or so back which she didn't attend.

Weekly Update to 6th February, 2020
The highlight this week would be Princess Alexandra undertaking her first official engagement for the year. That means that all the working royals have now done something this week (I am not counting Meghan nor Andrew anymore in that definition as per the stepping back announcements).
Edward spent a number of days in Africa Nigeria and Cote D-Ivoire for Duke of Edinburgh. Interestingly, although Nigeria is a Commonwealth country the CC has referred to the British Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria rather than the High Commissioner. They did this with Pakistan last year as well. I am using the terminology used in the CC even when I believe the CC is actually incorrect.

Sorry for the delay this week but I am still waiting on a CC for the 20th February. The British Monarchy website has skipped the 19th (which I know had events) and the 20th (which I think had reported events) so until I get the CC for the 20th I can't do this week's update.
If anyone has the 20th February I would appreciate it.

Weekly Update to 20th February, 2020
Thanks to Hel who sent me the CC for the 20th February.
Quite a busy week for those who did things while those with school aged children The Cambridges and Wessexs spent the week being parents rather than being working royals. Of course, as I go from Friday to Thursday I have events for Sophie before the half-term break began for the children.

Weekly Update to 27th February, 2020
The end of the school half-term break saw most of the family back to work. Camilla had a week off (maybe recovering from grandmothers duties over half-term ????). Harry, we saw undertake an engagement for Travalyst which wasnt in the CC (although the launch was last year).
Basically this was a steady as she goes week in the lead up to the overseas visits to Ireland and Europe by the Cambridges and Wales in the next couple of weeks.

Weekly Update to 5th March, 2020
A very busy week with William and Catherine on an official visit to the Republic of Ireland while Sophie was in South Sudan.
5th March shows just how hard the oldies work The Queen did 9 engagements and the Duke of Kent did 5. They were the two busiest on the day.
None of Harry and Meghans events were listed in the CC and so werent official engagements at all but rather private ones that the media attended. Why they werent listed could come down to a) The Queen didnt think they should be recorded as such or b) their staff didnt bother sending the list through to the Queens office for listing.
Once again I would like to thank Hel for getting me the information for the 2nd March that the British monarch site didnt think was worth publishing.

Weekly Update to 12th March, 2020
Another busy week for the BRF, especially with so many of them on show on Monday at the Commonwealth Day Service.
Sophie had to cancel her engagements on Wednesday due to ill health.
It will be interesting, given the cancellations by The Queen and Charles and Camilla to see how many other engagements are also cancelled or the type of engagements that dont appear so often in the types of engagements over the coming weeks.
I wouldnt be surprised to see a drop in visits and openeds but not in audiences or receiveds.
Harry and Meghan were recorded as attending the Commonwealth Day Service and Andrew as attending a Service of Thanksgiving with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. The media made a big deal of the fact that Andrew didnt get to represent The Queen and even reported that as a result it wouldnt be recorded in the CC but
they made that assumption BEFORE the CC was published and guess what Andrew was in the CC and thus has undertaken an official engagement this year. Earlier in the year he had someone else represent him at a similar event.
MISSING DAYS:
These dates are missing from the British monarchy website but were published in The Times or other websites based on The Times entries.
January 13th, 14th, 29th and 30th engagements missed 29
February 19th and 20th engagements missed 34
March 2nd and 12th engagements missed 14
Total Percentage of missed engagements 12.4% (or close to 1 in every 8 engagements)
12th March may be put up early next week. In past years the Thursday used to be available to me in Sydney on the Saturday but this year they seem to have moved it to the following week.
Milestones achieved this week: The Queen (57) reached her half century while The Prince of Wales (115) reached his century.
Approaching a milestone: The Duchess of Cornwall (44) and The Duchess of Cambridge (41) are both approaching their half-centuries.
Just a note approaching does mean they are within 10 of the milestone so someone on 89 engagements isnt listed as approaching this week but next week may have achieved.
Total Engagements with Individual Percentage of Total
HM The Queen 57 (48 up 9 9.2%)

Weekly Update to 19th March, 2020
As we are now all aware the older royals are in isolation so only five of the working royals can be ‘out and about’ but they largely haven’t been anyway. William and Catherine are in their 30s, Edward and Sophie in their 50s and Anne at 69. If the isolation of those over 70 continues into August then Anne also will have to be in isolation as per government instructions.
The Queen did her weekly ‘audience’ with the PM via phone – and that is how it is listed in the CC. Edward also did a ‘video conference’ for a meeting about The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards although Sophie apparently did a face-to-face meeting.
As we are aware a number of highlights in the royal watching calendar have already been cancelled – Maundy Thursday service, the garden parties, the Chelsea Flower Show while the State Visit from Japan and Charles and Camilla’s autumn tour have been postponed there isn’t a lot of ‘royal watching’ to do. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more cancellations – the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Trooping, the Garter and Ascot to come.
Sad days indeed for all of us.

Weekly Update to 26th March, 2020
This was a very slow week with no engagements for four days, for obvious reasons, and then a series of phone or video link engagements for The Queen, Charles (after his diagnosis), William, Edward and Sophie.
This is the final week for at least 14 years that we will have an HRH possibly undertaking duties in their 20s as Eugenie joined the rest of the young royals in their 30s.
