British Royal Family Engagements 2020

Weekly Update to 7th May, 2020

Another slow week with only meetings etc via either phone links or video links.

It has been interesting to see the different ways a video call or a phone call has been described – as you will see in the ‘types of engagements’. Someone is trying to keep things interesting at BP … whether deliberately or by accident but it does make it interesting to have to add new ‘types of engagements’ rather than ‘meeting via phone line’ or ‘meeting via video link’.

Charles has been busy having phone conversations with the First Ministers across the UK. Usually The Queen has one or maybe two audiences with the Scottish First Minister and one with the Welsh First Minister each year and the Northern Ireland First Minister less often. Charles has had a phone conversation with all three, plus the PM, in the past two weeks, which I find interesting.

Weekly Update to 14th May, 2020

I had an interesting discovery this week – The Times online doesn’t do the CC from the weekends at all and so has missed some engagements that are on the British monarchy website. In addition there is something unusual from the 13th/14th March. According to the British Monarchy site Anne and Tim went to the races and the rugby while the other source had them going to the races and not the rugby on the 14th but … the races were on the 13th and the rugby on the 14th. As I was relying on the online Times at the time I had to do a correction for Tim.

The other engagement that was missed by The Times online was on the 25th April when one of Camilla’s wasn’t recorded in The Times online edition (and such a sad day for Aussies and Kiwis as no royal made any acknowledgement of ANZAC Day for the first time in decades – no video message for instance).

I thought some people might be interested in a look at how many engagements royals have been doing while in lock down. I have done this from the day The Queen and Philip went to Windsor on the 19th March although no engagements were undertaken for the next four days while the family probably was getting organised for their time in lock down/isolation.

Another week of events via phone or video for the royals with most of them having at least one such event. The Queen had a Privy Council meeting via phone this month whereas in April it was via video.

Weekly Update to 28th May, 2020

Not quite as busy this week. As it is a half-term break in British schools (yes I know schools aren’t operating) it is normal for the Cambridge’s and Wessex’s to have the week off to enjoy the holidays with their children and even in lock down it seems they have done exactly that.

I do wonder whether the Cambridge’s are going to be returning to London this coming weekend so Charlotte can return to school. In the UK, for those who aren’t up on these things, school is going back for those children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. Charlotte is in Reception while George is in Year 2 so Charlotte could be returning but not George. I have read that the Cambridge’s aren’t going to send Charlotte back until George is able to go – in about another month but we will have to wait and see/read. That is also assuming that St Thomas’ is going to follow the government’s guidelines. Private schools have more freedom than state schools in this regard.

I was surprised as it is rare for a date to be posted after the next date has already been posted so as the 20th and 21st were already both up I was surprised to find the 19th posted. Now if they could only get the other dates up it would be great. 28th May I expect to be posted within a couple of days.

It was great to see some ‘visits’ and even a ‘received’ – the sort of daily break activities that form a large percentage of the types of engagements in the normal course of events. We also had the modified Queen’s Official Birthday Ceremony at Windsor.

Weekly Update to 25th June, 2020

This week saw more ‘out and about’ engagements and interestingly the first time in a long time that Charles hasn’t done an engagement. The last time was the week from the 12th – 19th March – the last week before lockdown and the week before he was diagnosed with covid 19.

Anne had two interesting engagements – where she addressed ‘a parade’ and ‘students’ via video link. The address to the ‘students’ was an the Chancellor of London University on the occasion of the students’ graduation.

Even though the CC may identify an engagement as Buckingham Palace or Clarence House we know that the royals concerned are following the government’s guidelines and so are isolating. As a result, I have listed their engagements based on their homes rather than their offices.

This will soon be back to normal – i.e. the palace identified in the CC will be the one used rather than the home. For the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, unless I hear otherwise, I will be putting them at Clarence House as we know that they have been back to London.

An interesting note ... well to me ... about this week's engagements.

Camilla had a video conference with GIVIT. I hadn't heard of GIVIT before and decided I would look into it today when ... our morning TV show had a snippet from the video conference.

GIVIT is an Aussie charity helping out in times of crisis. Due to the bushfires, back in January, Camilla gave a 'generous donation' (the term used on Channel 7). Two weeks ago she was made the royal patron and last week she had this video conference.

In the conference she said how much she loved Australia and areas she would still like to see (although we didn't get to see or hear that). Of course there are no overseas visits on the horizon for any royals for the rest of this year (and given the closed borders into Australia probably not until the second half of next year either given our PM has suggested July 2021 before Aussies can think about travelling overseas. We wouldn't take too kindly to having people allowed to come here when we can't leave).

The main point is that this is Camilla's first Aussie patronage.

Weekly Update to 2nd July, 2020

Another week with some visits but most engagements are still being done from inside the palaces and homes.

Normally this past week would have been Holyrood Week so the Queen had a phone audience with the First Minister of Scotland … as she would normally have a personal audience in Edinburgh.

Weekly Update to 9th July, 2020

There were a few engagements with royals out and about – lovely to see a couple of couples doing things together e.g. Charles and Camilla and William and Catherine. I always enjoy the visits when a couple are together rather than just one person. Other than Charles and Camilla the older royals (those over 70) are still all working via phone or video.

A few more out of palace engagements this week with Charles attending the Commissioning Ceremony for the RAF in Lincolnshire while Camilla visited the Chelsea Hospital. William and Anne also made some visits. The Wessex’s are presumably doing holiday things with the children as neither did any engagements this week. Overall this was a slow week, even by lock down week standard with only 18 engagements all up.

An interesting 'miss' in the CC for the 17th July.

In past years Camilla's birthday has been acknowledged in the CC on the 17th but not this year for some reason. Sophie's was acknowledged in January as has been Andrew's, Edward's, The Queen's and Philip's since but not Camilla's. No grandchildren are acknowledged but not the wife of the heir apparent.

The British monarch website is now one full month behind. It last updated on the 19th June and it is now the 20th July.

I wonder what is going on.

I know that some staff have had to be stood down due to covid so I wonder whether the people who update the website with the CC are amongst them?

Weekly Update to 23rd July, 2020

An interesting week with a wedding, that didn’t make it into the CC, unlike the weddings of the other HRH grandchildren of the Queen. I suspect this may be a first for a British HRH since the CC was created but it will take time to check.

We also had Philip undertaking his first official engagement for the year and didn’t he look great … at both the wedding and the handover. For a man who seemed to be at death’s door last December he looked fantastic. I suspect being in lock down with his wife has been a boost for him.

If anyone is wondering why I have put an engagement in this list for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh (and others) I have classed Beatrice’s wedding as an unofficial engagement as it didn’t make it into the CC. As Eugenie’s wedding did get mentioned in the CC in 2018 I thought it only right to count Beatrice’s as an unofficial engagement at least.

NB – I only can add events here if there is some mention of an event on this board. I don’t go looking for them.

Weekly Update to 30th July, 2020

Based on past years we are entering the quietest part of the year as August is a month with usually around 30 engagements for the entire month.

This past week was the first time, since the PM was on sick leave with covid 19 that there was no audience. This is normal when parliament isn’t sitting as the Queen does only have the weekly audience when parliament is sitting.
