Weekly Update to 3rd January, 2019

This is the first update for 2019. How the years have flown by since I first did this in 2012.

Thank you to all those who have supported me over the years directly via comments, PMs and the ‘thanks’ box but also to all of the 1000s of people who have simply read the posts each week. It makes it seem that maybe my hobby isn’t such a ‘strange’ one after all.

Short and sweet this week with only two engagements so far this year and no prizes for guessing which two members of the BRF they belong to – Charles and Anne.

As in past years there will be one post per week until there is too much information for one post. I will also only include a royal once their name has appeared undertaking an engagement in the CC. That is the same for things like palaces where engagements occur, overseas engagements and meetings with politicians. Short and sweet - if it isn't here then there has been none so far this year under that heading.

If I am told I will continue to do an unofficial record for the York princesses but I don’t go looking for that information – although I often find it on their pages here anyway.

Weekly Update to 10th January, 2019

The majority of the family are still on holidays although some are doing the odd engagement e.g. The Queen did one of her usual Sunday at Sandringham engagements. This was the one where she presented a Bible to a pupil. She still has a couple of Academic Excellence awards for local schools and also an attendance at Sunday School presentations to do while on holidays. Interestingly with all the discussions around Brexit she hasn’t had an audience with Mrs May but that may very well happen this week with Mrs May, and maybe other members of the Privy Council travelling to Norfolk to see her.

I have seen a number of sites describing a couple of William’s engagements as ‘unannounced’ but they were ones where he ‘received’ an individual. These are never announced, like the Queen’s audiences and council meetings. They announce public engagements in advance not all official engagements.

I am going to add a section on ‘announced engagements’ for the upcoming week, month and year (yes there already an announced engagement for June on the FE). Interestingly two announced engagements have already been taken off the FE – one for Sophie and one for Alexandra.

Types of Engagements from 4th January – 10th January, 2019

Just a reminder that this is the type of engagement that occurred in the past week but the total is the total for the year not just for the week. This week it is obvious that all of these types of engagements occurred during this past week as none of them appeared last week. However, that isn’t always the case e.g. there may be no ‘opened’ next week so it won’t appear in the list but will appear again when there is another ‘opened’. ‘Presented Bible’ probably won’t appear again this year as it is usually a once a year engagement.

Announced Engagements for the week 11th – 17th January, 2019

For these engagements I am using the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website, The Prince of Wales' website, The Duke of York’s Website and Gert’s Royals – Cambridge and Sussex pages although I am only including ‘confirmed engagements’ from there.

If a royal doesn’t appear in this list they have no engagements listed for the upcoming week in any of these sites as at today (11th January, Sydney time). Engagements may occur that aren’t announced, especially by The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke of York.

The engagements that were announced on the FE and have been removed I am keeping because last year that had The Duchess of Gloucester doing a trip to Spain for the tennis for about four weeks, then about two weeks out they removed it and then, guess what – that trip went ahead exactly as originally announced.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall – 2
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 2 (edited as found another engagement for this upcoming week)
HRH The Duke of Sussex – 4 (edited as found another engagement for this upcoming week)
HRH The Duchess of Sussex – 5 (edited as found another engagement for this upcoming week)
HRH The Countess of Wessex – 1
HRH The Princess Royal – 10
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester – 1

For the rest of January:

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall – 2
HRH The Duke of Cambridge – 2
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 1
HRH The Duke of Sussex – 3
HRH The Duchess of Sussex – 4
HRH The Earl of Wessex – 5 (28th listed simply as Barcelona with no details so only 1 counted here but maybe more will be done)
HRH The Countess of Wessex – 1
HRH The Princess Royal – 24
HRH The Duke of Gloucester – 2
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester – 1
HRH Princess Alexandra – 3 (includes the now deleted visit to the Swan Sanctuary and Presentation of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service)

For the rest of 2019

This list is only those who have announced engagements past the end of January and the count is from 1st February to 31st December

HRH The Earl of Wessex – 7
HRH The Countess of Wessex – 13 (includes the now deleted evensong at Wells Cathedral on 26th February)
HRH The Princess Royal – 45
HRH The Duke of Gloucester – 6
HRH The Duchess of Gloucester – 8
HRH Princess Alexandra – 3

Weekly Update to 17th January, 2019

A few more royals have undertaken their first engagements for the year – The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of Sussex, The Duke of York, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and The Duchess of Gloucester.

The news has been full, of course, of Philip’s accident and the visits of the Cambridges and Sussexes but Anne has steadily gone about her business with no coverage at all as per usual. The media only want to cover those whose clothes they can describe rather than the royals who actually do work regularly for their charities – sad state of affairs when the clothes they wear is more important than the causes they support.

Total Engagements with Individual Percentage of Total

HM The Queen – 2 (1 – up 1 – 3.4%)

A reminder that sometimes the royal patron of an organisation may be accompanied by another royal on and engagement related to one of their patronages. As a result the royal patronage is listed in both the above listed of organisations supported by their patron as well as here being supported by a royal who is not their patron. It is also possible for a royal to attend an event related to an organisation of which they are not the patron as happened last year with The Duchess of Cambridge attended and event for City Farms of which The Princess Royal is the actual patron. In those circumstances it is possible for an organisation to be both a patronage and a non-patronage.

When I first said I was going to do this I mentioned that The Duke of York is not referred to as The Earl of Inverness in Scotland and the CC has again shown that to be the case. The one engagement The Duke of York has done was in Scotland and the CC called him The Duke of York.

Regarding the league table: shouldn't the DofS have 7 instead of 1.

Weekly Update to 24th January, 2019

The BRF are getting back to work with more engagements this week, including the first overseas visit of the year with William going to Switzerland for the Davos Forum (something Andrew used to attend when he was the Trade Ambassador).

An interesting visit, I noticed this week, was Andrew visiting RAF Marham at Kings Lynn. The Queen, and until last year The Duke of Edinburgh, used to visit every year. Such a visit by The Queen is not in the FE for her, which doesn’t mean much as such a visit may still happen and just not be released as an upcoming engagement as there is no real public access to the events so not normally announced ahead of time.

Princess Alexandra did her first engagement for the year this past week so only the Duke of Kent, of the regular working royals, is still to undertake an engagement but he is listed as having one on the 27th so should be in the list next week.

Announced Engagements for the week 25th – 31st January, 2019

For these engagements I am using the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website, The Prince of Wales website, The Duke of York’s Website and Gert’s Royals – Cambridge and Sussex pages although I am only including ‘confirmed engagements’ from there.

If a royal doesn’t appear in this list they have no engagements listed for the upcoming week in any of these sites as at today (26th January, Sydney time).

A week ago the FE listed an a visit to Parbold Equestrian Centre for the 18th but that engagement didn’t then appear in the CC although Anne did undertake the other engagement listed in the FE for that date.

It is worth noting that things like receiving someone, or meetings and many other types of engagements are not announced in advance as they aren’t public engagements. They don’t announce engagements to which the public have no access which is why The Queen usually appears to have nothing upcoming but she does a lot of engagements in the palaces etc such as audiences and investitures.

It is also interesting that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall appear to be putting up more engagements on the FE about two weeks in advance. Long may it continue.

HRH The Duke of Kent – 1
HRH Princess Alexandra – 2 (one was announced weeks ago but has since disappeared from the FE so may or may not actually happen)

I don't determine a person's attendance, or non-attendance, based on pictures.

Prince Andrew's twitter only refers to her attending on one day and so only one day counts.

I have come across no press mention or other mention of her attendance on any day other than the day she gave the speech. She may have attended as part of the audience but only the speech is mentioned so that is the only 'unofficial' count I give.

She may have even changed outfits at the event from giving the speech to a night session for instance.

I am unable to edit the post about upcoming engagements but there is now one for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge that wasn't announced when I made this post.

29th January they are visiting Dundee to open the new Dundee V&A Museum and undertake a walkabout to meet people. Whether the latter will actually count as an engagement or simply be and addition to the first I will have to wait and see when the CC is published for the 29th.

Sorry I wasn't able to include it but this does show how late engagements can be announced. I had read that there was a visit to Dundee in the works on Sunday Sydney time and now, on Tuesday morning - Monday evening London time - I found the details.

It seems that the actual events during the Dundee visit were embargoed until midnight on the 28th in London.

They are also attending an event - or maybe two depending on how the CC words them - at the Michelin plant which is closing in 2020.

So they have another engagement - making at least two and possibly four in this upcoming week - to the end of January.

Weekly Update to 31st January, 2019

Edward made his one day visit to Spain this week and the Duke of Kent has two overseas visits scheduled in the FE already – Cyprus and Germany. I do think that a lot of people miss that fact that most of the BRF do undertake overseas visits and sometimes for only one day such as Edward’s visit to Spain – in and out on the same day and two engagements there. Anne has even been known to fly to Canada for a single engagement.

The first major investiture of the year took place with William doing the investing. Interestingly it hardly received any coverage whereas in past years every William investiture would get at least one and often two articles in the media outlets with video coverage but these days if he doesn’t have Catherine with him he often gets hardly any coverage. The media had no clothes about which to comment and that is all they are really interested in writing about these days – what Catherine and Meghan wear with no interest in what the royals are actually doing.

An interesting note this week. Up until the 24th January all of The Princess Royal’s engagements were listed under Buckingham Palace but since the 29th they have been listed under St James’ Palace. That would suggest that maybe she has had to move her office to St James’ during the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace. The Duke of York and the Wessex’s are still listed under Buckingham Palace, as is Princess Alexandra. I remember reading the CC in 2002 – 2004 as Prince Charles was preparing to take over Clarence House that there were a couple of days when he was listed under CH and then back to St James’ before permanently coming under CH.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE This section will note when a royal reaches their century, double century etc. I will also note if a royal is in the 90s, 190s etc.

When I do my analysis at the end of the year this will be broken down into a range of even 'types of politicians' e.g. UK or Overseas, Heads of State or Heads of Government. I hope those extra details will be of interest to people when I do them.

Interestingly for his section that the CC didn’t use Earl and Countess of Strathearn for TRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to Dundee. Last year they would have been officially called The Earl and Countess of Strathearn when in Scotland but not this year.

Announced Engagements for the week 1st – 7th February, 2019

For these engagements I am using the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website, The Prince of Wales website, The Duke of York’s Website and Gert’s Royals – Cambridge and Sussex pages although I am only including ‘confirmed engagements’ from there.

If a royal doesn’t appear in this list they have no engagements listed for the upcoming week in any of these sites as at today (2nd February, Sydney time).

It is also interesting that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall appear to be putting up more engagements on the FE about two weeks in advance. Long may it continue.

Weekly Update to 7th February, 2019

Last week The Princess Royal had engagements listed under both Buckingham Palace and St James’ Palace. That was repeated this week with some days BP and some days St James’.

This was the busiest week for the year so far – as is normal. The Queen should be undertaking duties from London next week as she normally leaves Sandringham a few days after the 6th February and the anniversary of her father’s death. Of course she also now has the 9th February on her date of ‘remembrance days’ as this years is the 17th anniversary of her sister … and then on the 30th March she has the anniversary of the death of her mother.

Another interesting feature of this past week. The Princess Royal made a day visit to Northern Ireland and undertook four engagements. These engagements did not appear in the ‘Future Engagements’ of the British Monarchy website, even the day before and so don’t appear in my count of ‘upcoming events for the coming week. Over 20 years on from the Good Friday Agreement the BRF still do not announce engagements in Northern Ireland for security reasons it seems.

For the first time this year Vice Admiral Tim Laurence accompanied The Princess Royal on engagements – one a dinner and the other the rugby. I would expect him to accompany his wife again this week to watch Scotland play in the Six Nations Rugby Competition.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE This section will note when a royal reaches their century, double century etc. Anne is approaching her half-century as she is now on 41. She has six engagements listed for the upcoming week but if she was to have a meeting or receive someone or other then she may get the next nine this week.

Weekly Update to 14th February, 2019
The Queen returned to London after her winter break and had her first council meeting of the year. She also had her first meeting with the Prime Minister for the year. That did surprise me given the Brexit turmoil in parliament. The PM didn’t therefore have a meeting with the Queen at all during in January to brief her on what was going on.

The Duke of Kent had a visit to Germany, which he does quite regularly – either to commemorations in Dresden, or to visit army units there. This past visit was a Dresden visit as he is the Patron of the Dresden Trust. He will also shortly make a visit to Cyprus. Not bad for a man in his 80s.

Milestones achieved this week: The Princess Royal has reached her half century.

Approaching a milestone: The Prince of Wales should reach his half century this week as he is currently on 47.

Announced Engagements for the week 15th – 21st February, 2019

For these engagements I am using the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website, The Prince of Wales website, The Duke of York’s Website and Gert’s Royals – Cambridge and Sussex pages although I am only including ‘confirmed engagements’ from there.

Sorry for the delay in the update this week. I went away over the weekend and left my disk with the information on at home. I will put it up later today when I get home from work.

:previous: ILuvBertie-No need to apologize IMO. Thank you for the weekly updates.?

Weekly Update to 21st February, 2019

Sorry for the delay. In addition to forgetting to take my disk with me I returned home to major internet issues (Aussies may understand when I say ‘I hate the NBN’. I had a better, faster and more reliable service before being forced onto the NBN … and the classic comment from Optus … ‘you need to ring us on the landline as it is connected to the modem’. The problem with that comment – the modem isn’t working properly so the landline also isn’t working so I can’t ring them on the landline. That one had me laughing. Hopefully they will be able to get a technician out to check things for me during the upcoming April school holidays. Until then I am reliant on one of those mobile internet things … which speed wise is pretty well as good as the NBN but allows me less access over the month – only 4GB per month – but I will see how things go.

Many people may notice that the Cambridges and Wessexes didn't have any engagements this week - probably due to spending the week with their children over the half-term break ... and rightly so.

Milestones achieved this week: The Prince of Wales reached his half century.

Approaching a milestone: NONE in the 40s or 90s this week

Weekly Update to 28th February, 2019

This week saw Harry and Meghan make their trip to Morocco and William and Catherine visit Northern Ireland. As usual there was no advance warning of this visit. This is normal procedure. Anne’s earlier visit to the Northern Ireland was also not announced in advance. The only royals whose visit to Northern Ireland can be predicted is Charles and Camilla’s as they normally add three or four days to their visit to the Republic. They have been making an annual visit for a number of years now.

The Duke of Kent has also visited Cyprus to visit the Scots Guards there. He did serve there himself with the Scots Guards when he did serve in the army. This is a visit he makes a couple of times a year even in his 80s.

The reason for the difference in number of engagements for Harry and Meghan is that the CC only had Harry attending the Investiture. When William did an investiture overseas, in the past, Catherine was recorded as with him. That is not the normal procedure of course.

This week we saw the Wales branch commemorate the 50 years since Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales (along with The Queen and The Princess Royal) but no younger brothers for some reason. His cousins were there but not his younger siblings who are of an age with David and Sarah.

The Duke of Kent continued his visit to Cyprus.

William attended his second Duchy of Cornwall meeting this year. The last three or four such meetings have had William attending and not Charles. Charles has attended the last couple of Duchy of Lancaster meetings. This is the clearest evidence of the ‘changing of the guard’ as Charles seems to be taking over the running of the Duchy of Lancaster from his mother while William is taking over the Duchy of Cornwall from his father. Maybe I am reading more into this development than is really the case but it has to happen at some point. Charles and William did attend some Duchy of Cornwall meetings together a couple of years ago but now it seems it is William looking after Cornwall.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE

Approaching a milestone: Camilla, William and Harry are now all in the 40s but there is NO ONE in the 90s this week.

Interestingly in past years the CC has listed the subsidiary titles when a royal has visited a part of the UK to which that title pertains e.g. Earls of Strathearn and Inverness in Scotland and Baron Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland. This year the only royals for whom subsidiary titles have been used have been the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall when in Scotland.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 5
HRH Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank – 7

Announced Engagements for the week 8th – 14th March, 2019

For these engagements I am using the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website, The Prince of Wales website, The Duke of York’s Website and Gert’s Royals – Cambridge and Sussex pages although I am only including ‘confirmed engagements’ from there.

If a royal doesn’t appear in this list they have no engagements listed for the upcoming week in any of these sites as at today (2nd March, Sydney time).

Hope you are on the mend from the flu!

Meg

That’s a nice article, Ladongas, thanks for posting it!

It’s nice that Mr. O’Donovan has devoted so many years and time on calculating the royal family’s official engagements. Although, I think he has helped cause a great deal of irritation within the royal family and their officials.

It can’t be easy for them to have their official engagements and others duties to The Queen, United Kingdom and Commonwealth all boiled down to just a list of numbers at the end of the year. Those numbers just don’t do justice to what it takes to do their job within the “Firm.”

Weekly Update to 7th March, 2019

Sorry for the delay but I have been in bed with the flu. Easy enough to read and post occasionally but I need my wits about me when doing the analysis. Hopefully will be back to weekly from this week.

Whatever flu hit you, hit me last month and I can attest to the fact that my wits weren't about me at all. In fact, if I could have said I felt like death warmed over, it would have been an upgrade. Glad you're back with us among the living and feeling better. ?

Weekly Update to 14th March, 2019

The pace of engagements is picking up it seems, as is normal, as the BRF approach spring and summer as there were nearly 100 engagements amongst the family this week. They have two busy spurt periods each year – March – July and October – November.

Milestones achieved this week: William made his half century (51)

Approaching a milestone: Charles and Anne are both in the 90s. The Queen, Camilla, Harry, Edward and Sophie are now all in the 40s.
