British Royal Family Engagements 2018

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I think the appropriate question to ask here is "how can we help?". There are some among us that actively cruise the CC here that could gather information and save it for you or perhaps keep in mind to keep a record of things they come across. Princess Larisa comes to mind. What would work and help you out during this time? I'm not adept at gathering information but I do know about knees and the problems that can come with them.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for you to catch up on some reading you've been meaning to do. It doesn't need to be expensive either and most books that I order and come through the mail are around $3.99 (USD) $5.41 (AUD) and that includes the shipping and handling charges. The website I use is abebooks.com.

I remember being bed bound for almost an entire summer because of surgeries on both of my knees when I was 14 and to pass the time, my mother dug out her old Gregg typing books and a rickety old manual typewriter and I taught myself how to type. I think its served me quite well over the ensuring years. :D

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for both you and that knee and also for your computer. :flowers:

I am planning of re-learning my Latin from school days.

My mother also had me learn to type as a youngster - during my holidays after my first year of uni.

As long as I have access to the internet I will be able to do the analysis - it is just that I am a few days behind at the moment and trying to sit using the computer for an hour at a time is a bit of a strain but if I do it in 10 - 20 minute sessions I should be fine.

I should have last week's up tomorrow and hopefully will be back on course after that.

I am also in touch with some friends to see if any of them can either fix my computer or take it to somewhere to get it fixed for me. That will become the problem - no access to the internet maybe.

I think a set up like I have would work great for you. I have a recliner which is positioned parallel to my computer desk and my monitor (big, honking wide screen U-shaped one) is on a table next to the computer desk. Sitting in the recliner, I face the monitor and also face the big screen TV we have. This way my legs are straight and I can work with my keyboard on my lap. Its weird but I can watch my monitor out of my right eye and the TV out of my left.

BTW: I call my recliner the "lazy bitch". Its wonderful for someone like me that as I grew older, found my legs and knees just ain't what they used to be. I love being an armchair traveler. :D

Weekly Update to 28th June, 2018

Sorry for the delay but with a painful broken bone in my knee I am sure you will understand that it is taking me longer to do things than normal.

This was an interesting week – with William’s middle east tour while Harry was still in Africa and Anne flew to Canada to undertake 2 engagements (one of which was to be ‘received by’ the local Lt-Governor on arrival. Only when they are on an overseas tour do I count these events).

Charles has brought up his triple century for the year while the total number of engagements has topped 2000.

A short note about how I am referencing Harry: If he undertook and engagement somewhere before the marriage and so was listed as HRH Prince Henry of Wales I am leaving it in that form until he does something similar as HRH The Duke of Sussex so he is now referred to as The Duke of Sussex as visiting South Africa - a country he has now visited twice this year.

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 28th June, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 12
HRH Princess Eugenie of York – 10

Weekly Update to 5th July, 2018

This is always a special week with the Queen spending time at The Palace of Holyrood House for her annual week in Scotland and Charles and Camilla doing their annual tour of Wales (although it seems that Camilla was only there for the first few days and not the entire week as she usually is).
We also saw a number of the BRF at events to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS.

Just a note to thank Princess Larissa for giving me a link to a second source for the CC. Without that link I would not have been able to do this most recent update as the online CC hasn't updated since the 4th July - 11 days ago.

We have a wonderful crew of people here that are fastidious about finding out just what the British royal family is up to. Eya also provides information sometimes that isn't easily found.

You've started it all, Iluvbertie, and I think its a credit to your abilities as a teacher and a mentor and most definitely a person well worth emulating. ?

Thanks. This started as a way to deal with the depression that followed the death of my father and has simply become a major hobby since then.

Glad to help.
And the official royal website has finally been updated today:rolleyes:.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

HRH Princess Beatrice of York – 14
HRH Princess Eugenie of York – 13

Many thanks for all your hard work and time in typing this for us.

Weekly Update to 2nd August, 2018

Sorry for the delay but the CC hasn’t updated since 1st August and my other source hadn’t done so since the 29th July. The second source has now updated for the 2nd and 3rd August (which as I expected was ‘no court circular). Interestingly the other source had an event for Edward that the online CC didn’t have. I have had that happen in both directions a couple of times this year where the two sources differ. I believe the 2nd source is taken from The Times which suggest that the print version sometime includes an event not in the online CC and vice versa – that online sometimes includes events that isn’t put in the print media for some reason.

In August the average number of events for the entire family is usually in the 30 – 40 range (going back to 2000) so it will be interesting to see how many they do this year. So far – to the 2nd August there have been 3 – all done by Anne, taking her over the 300 for the year.

I noticed on another site a media outlet claiming Anne is the ‘hardest working’ royal. That is of course based on days worked but in total engagements Charles is leading the field. I find it interesting that some outlets are determined to keep up the narrative that Anne is the hardest working by changing the way they determine that person – when Anne and Philip topped the number of engagements that was all that was considered but now that Charles is topping the number of engagements they have to find another way to put him down below his sister – number of days undertaking official engagements.

Weekly Update to 9th August, 2018

Only Elizabeth, William, Edward, Sophie, Anne and Tim undertook official engagements this week. Tim, of course, accompanied Anne (he occasionally does something with another royal – usually the Duke of Kent related to his position with the Commonwealth War Graves or represents someone – usually Anne – as a funeral but otherwise he accompanies Anne.)

In August the average number of events for the entire family is usually in the 30 – 40 range (going back to 2000) so it will be interesting to see how many they do this year. So far – to the 9th August there have been 25 – with Anne and Tim doing 7 each on the 6th August accounting for 14 of them. This is looking at being a very busy August … by normal standards.

There were pictures of Louise with her mother but she didn’t get any mention in the CC which is why her numbers don’t change. That is the third time this year we have seen her and she hasn’t been mentioned (the other was the Queen’s birthday concert).

With Beatrice’s 30th birthday the formula I use to calculate the percentages by ages has been adjusted with the 7 engagements she has done so far included in the 20s but anything she does from now on will count in the 30s. Later this year I have to repeat that formula change for Charles when he turns 70.

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 9th August, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

Weekly Update to 16th August, 2018

The only adjustments this week are to The Duke of Sussex who undertook two engagements on the 8th August that weren’t added to the CC until the 10th August.

From the 10th – 16th August there were no engagements at all. I am basing this on my second source for the CC as the British monarchy hasn't updated since the 9th August - which it wouldn't do if there were no engagements. They haven't even put in the note about Harry's engagements on the 10th but I have seen that note from both by second general source AND other sources that quote some entries from The Times.

More interesting to me is that no site has acknowledged The Princess Royal's birthday so maybe there will be changes if and when the British monarchy online website does finally update.

The above analysis is up to date as the online CC has updated - at least to the 15th August as they now have the entry:

Today is the Anniversary of the Birthday of The Princess Royal.

I do not count such entries as an official engagement (any more than I count Kate giving birth).

I know some people think that the CC only record 'official engagements' but it is more than that. It is the official record of the life and death of the royal family e.g. I doubt that anyone would count the Queen Mother's death as an official engagement for the Queen Mum but it was recorded in the CC.

I have spent the last 7 weeks analysing the CC from 1997 onwards based on the online CC and am finding it interesting things that they did every year and now don't do e.g. taking the salute at the Royal Windsor Horse Show used to see a rotation of royals every year but now it doesn't usually get a mention.

Last night I was looking at the end of 2003 and one thing jumped right out at me:

9th November 2003 The Countess of Wessex, according to the CC, attended the commemoration event at the Cenotaph for Remembrance Sunday. I would suggest that there is absolutely no chance that she did do that and looking at the entry for the 8th November the reason is clear ... Louise was born on the 8th. Interesting to that the description after the birth was that 'mother and baby were stable'. Of course royal followers will know that both she and Louise almost died. The CC also records Edward still carrying out engagements overseas on the 9th but I am sure he left almost immediately to return to be with his wife and child - and was even told that he might not return in time and might have to make the decision to turn off life support to one or both while on the plane.

That is evidence that there are times when the CC is prepared in advance and not checked off daily as we are led to believe. T here is also evidence of that from 2012 when William is recorded in the CC attending an event but he cancelled that event due to Kate being in hospital with HG.

It does mean that there are times when the CC isn't an accurate record at all - sadly for future historians - who may not bother reading other sources but only rely on this (as modern historians often do when going backwards as often the CC is available but not other reports).

Weekly Update to 23rd August, 2018

There were no engagements this week at all.

Yes we saw members of the family attend church but the CC only said the Divine Service was held and no list of who attended. It is therefore not an official engagement for any of the family.

As a result this week’s entry is only the Total Engagements and the rest is as above. The total number of engagements for August 2018 so far is 27.

Weekly Update to 30th August, 2018

Only five engagements this week. Camilla undertook a visit, Harry and Meghan’s attendance at the performance and Charles had two behind closed doors.

A note about the Braemar Games this weekend: this is another one of those occasions when we see some of the royals but isn’t an official engagement for any of them.

As a result this week’s entry is only the Total Engagements and the rest is as above. The total number of engagements for August 2018 so far is 31 – which is about average.

A reminder for the way I record this as there appears to have been a number of new members in recent weeks. A person who attends an event alongside the patron, president etc but who themselves holds not such position with the organisation is recorded here. That means Harry’s attendance at the performance is counted in the section above as he is the Patron of Sentabele but Meghan gets counted here as she doesn’t hold any official position.

I have recorded Charles’ events this week as occurring at Birkhall because he was described in the CC as ‘Duke of Rothesay’ – his Scottish title so he would have had to undertake those duties in Scotland. Normally when he undertakes an engagement at Dumfries House it is listed but this isn’t listed as Dumfries and I know he is staying at Birkhall … hence recording his events this week as at Birkhall.

Unofficial Engagements for Beatrice and Eugenie to 30th August, 2018

Some people have asked why I haven’t included as I did in the past. Simple reason – the source I had in the past stopped giving any updates so I didn’t have any information.

I don’t go looking for these so if I am not given a link I am not able to include any events. The girls may have done more charity type work than this but I haven’t been told about it, hence the figures as they are.

Weekly Update to 6th September, 2018

It seems that the majority of the BRF have returned to work this week as most have undertaken at least one engagement.

Last week I said that the Braemar Games wouldn’t be an ‘official engagement’. This year was different – probably because the Queen and Charles opened the new pavilion. However in past years this has not been official event which is why I said what I did last week.

If you only read the press you would think that only William, Harry and Meghan have undertaken any official duties (other than the Queen, Charles and Anne at Braemar but they would be wrong as there were many engagements this week as you will see from the following analysis.
