Iluvbertie, should I be considering writing to the palace about The Court Circular. In fairness you are doing an admirable job and they should be assisting you with it in my humble opinion!

I have used the 'contact us' link on their website a couple of times about it and never received a reply. I don't think they care to be quite honest.

Weekly update to 1st October, 2015

Sorry for the delay but the website didn’t update for the 30th September or the 1st October so I had to wait for Cepe who once again came through with the information.

Retirement age differs from country to country, would you please define the age you are using?

If 65 is being used then the numbers for over 60 and over retirement age would be the same, unless Anne is not included.

Thanks

65 is the age in the UK..

Anne only turned 65 in August so my figures are different as for most of this year she was in the over 60 but not over retirement age figures until after she reached retirement age. I adjusted the formula to include her figures, from her birthday only, in the retirement percentages but these are year long figures not daily or weekly ones.

Next year the figures will be combined as they will be the same but not this year. They won't need to be separated again for five years (assuming people still want me to do that in five years time) when Andrew turns 60.

I am thinking about adjusting the 'over 85' to 'over 80' next year as there will be three in that category as the Duke of Kent turns 80 on Friday and at the end of next year Alexandra will be added to that category.

Weekly update to 8th October, 2015

Again I needed to have help from Cepe as the British Monarchy Website is updating so strangely at the moment:

Mondays are updated on Tuesday
Tuesdays on a Wednesday
Wednesday on Thursday

All fairly standard but:

Thursdays instead of being done on Friday are now having to wait until at least the following Monday, along with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Maybe they are cutting costs in the royal household by only having the person who updates the CC online employed for four days a week instead of five.

Anne finished her overseas visit and both Sophie and Richard made overseas visits this week.

Apparent error on the Royal website CC.

It currently says that Camilla attended the Mann Booker prize on 11th October. That event is actually happening tonite (13th October).

The Times does not have this engagement on the 11th.

Hopefully it will be amended.

16.3% of all engagements are being done by those over 85 – down.
31.5% done by those 70 and above – down.
70.6% are being done by those over 60 – down.
41.4% were done by those in their 60s – down.
55.3% were done by those over retirement age – down.

Some of these statistics that measure the British royals make me laugh. Do we know how many engagements are done by left-handed vs right-handed individuals? That's not meant to be directed at Iluvbertie just a general comment.

But seriously is there any other royal family on earth that puts so much emphasis on numbers

Thank you for your statement cepe. Strangely enough though I've encountered so many posters at various sites who truly believe that it is the BRF and not the media who "count" the engagements. IMO the Court Circular just presents information about the various members of the family and does not attach any numbers to their activities.

That is also my understanding.

The original idea for the CC, in the 1760s or there abouts, was to simply record the events that the royals were undertaking.

In the 1980s Mr O'Donovan decided to keep a count for a year and sent the results, in the form of a letter, to The Times and The Telegraph. It was very well received so he has done it ever since.

For this site - I remember reading his letter/figures at the end of 2011. Having just lost my father in September of that year, moved house so I could demolish and rebuilt my own house, and a few other 'depressing' events at the time I decided to keep my own count in 2012 - Jubilee and Olympics Year. It was a few months into that year when I mentioned on here that I was doing that and people asked to see my figures so I put them up and have continued doing so ever since.

I find it interesting that the DM, for instance, now makes their own reports and there are other sites that are keeping track of events for some royals. I have also come across at least one site where a poster was copying my figures and they were stopped because they weren't acknowledging they were getting the figures from here.

I find it interesting to do.

Originally I didn't even do a League Table but was asked to do one by some posters. Other pieces of information I include has also come across as a result of comments here and elsewhere.

Weekly update to 15th October, 2015

Again a huge thanks to Cepe particular as they updated so badly this week that had events on the wrong day and left out events as well. Honestly anyone who is relying on the online website for this information is missing a lot of relevant information. They are getting worse instead of better in my opinion.

Anne and Edward both overseas for a day or so this week.

A note about the rugby: William and Kate’s attendance at the Wales vs Australia match wasn’t an official engagement. The Gloucesters and Anne, however, were recorded as undertaking an official engagement when attending the rugby matches that they did attend. HM has her reasons I am sure but there is an inconsistency here. At least one of Harry’s appearances at the rugby also hasn’t been official.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 12th and 13th October while the 11th October is inaccurate including missing engagements by members of the royal family. There are a total of 48 missing engagements.

Still missing from earlier in the year – 22nd, 23rd, 24th July, 4th, 23rd August and 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, September. These are dates on which there were engagements for royals recorded in The Times but not on the website. The 8th October was updated earlier this week.

Total number of engagements missed on the website to 15th October, 2015 – 99

This week was a total mess – the website for the 11th October had one event for Camilla that she didn’t do until the 13th according to The Times (and the media reporting on when the event actually occurred). It also left out engagements on the 11th for a number of royals, but had other events that were on the 11th. Having got the 11th mixed up they proceeded to compound the situation by having the 12th mixed up as well.

What would be really interesting to see would be a pie chart representing the number of engagements carried out by each royal.

Later in the year I will have the statistics for each type of event listed above for each royal - not in a pie-chart or graph but just the list and the number that they did e.g. The Queen has attended 4 Afternoon Parties this year and I have the breakdown for the rest of the royals who have done so.

I can put up the list by royal and by engagement and will do so after Christmas when they have finished for the year and I have the time to create the posts.

If I am able to do so I may try to create graphs or pie charts but the excel document has 81 types of engagements with 21 royals (including Tim) who carry out engagements.

When I have some free time I hope to produce a graph showing the fluctuation of royal engagements for the whole family since 2000, and maybe even a pie chart showing the numbers from just last year.

Weekly update to 22nd October, 2015

A very busy week it seems with the State Visit but was it really? There were only 111 engagements this week with 17 of those the State Banquet. Here are some notes anyway. The royal who actually spent the most time with the Chinese President was the Duke of York who escorted him on days 2 and 3 as well as attending the second banquet. From the coverage of the visit most people wouldn’t have realised that. It should be remembered, I think, that coverage of a royal doesn’t necessarily equate with the amount of work that they are doing with some getting pages and pages for one engagement while others get nothing despite doing hundreds of engagements.

An interesting engagement as far as the difference between ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ this week. On Thursday morning here in Australia the morning news coverage showed a ‘horse-whisperer’ visiting BP and showed The Queen engaged in a conversation with him. In the background was Camilla … but the CC listed this as an official engagement for Camilla only. The Queen wasn’t there officially at all, just for interest it seems.

Sophie made a one day visit to Germany this week. She does this event most years – on a plane in the morning, attends one engagement with the military there and returns in the evening. I know flying time etc isn’t that long but it is still a long way to go for one engagement.

Last weekend, again, only Anne and Tim officially attended the Rugby even though we also saw Harry at the game. This has been an interesting interpretation of what counts as official and unofficial by The Queen as she is the one who determines what is and what isn’t worthy of an entry in the CC.
