Weekly update to 13th August, 2015

Andrew carried out two engagements in Singapore and the Queen officially arrived at Balmoral. There were the only engagements for the family this week.

I only have entries on the website for the 9th, 10th and 11th. There were engagements where someone represented the Queen but those things aren’t engagements for any of the royals so I don’t count them e.g.By command of The Queen, Ms. Catherine Nettleton (Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps) called upon His Excellency Dr. Dalhatu Tafida at Nigeria House, 9 Northumberland Avenue, London WC2, today in order to bid farewell to His Excellency upon relinquishing his appointment as High Commissioner for the Federal Republic of Nigeria in London.

My informal count for Beatrice of which I am aware is at 26 thanks to Duchesschicana who gave me information about more engagements for her. That means she has three official engagements and 23 that had they been done by other royals would have been counted as an engagement.

HM The Queen – 275 (274 – up 1 – 11.3%)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 171 (171– no change – 7.0%)
HRH The Prince of Wales – 367 (367 – no change – 15.0%)

HRH The Duchess of Cambridge – 25 (25 – no change – 1.0%)
HRH Prince Henry of Wales - 57 (57 – no change – 2.3%)
HRH The Duke of York – 185 (183 – up 2 – 7.6%)

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester - 72 (72 – no change – 2.9%)
HRH The Duke of Kent – 118 (118 – no change – 4.8%)
HRH The Duchess of Kent - 0 (0 – no change – 0%)

HRH Princess Michael of Kent - 6 (6 – no change – 0.25%)
HRH Princess Alexandra – 61 (61 – no change – 2.5%)

The 'league table'

There has been some discussion on various threads at times about reducing the size of the royal family. IF the idea is for the royal family to be Charles and his family and maybe his siblings these are those who would be doing duties. Charles and his line are in purple and his siblings and spouses are in green. The Queen and Philip are in red.

Weekly update to 20th August, 2015

Other than the Commemorative events for VP Day there are no other engagements listed for this past week. Eight members of the BRF attended events that day for a total of 16 engagements.

My informal count for Beatrice of which I am aware is at 26. That means she has three official engagements and 23 that had they been done by other royals would have been counted as an engagement. I didn’t count the ‘Lean In’ Dinner as it appears to have been a private function and not a fundraiser or other charity type event with only 15 or so people present.

August Figures since 2000.

Some people may think that this year's numbers for August are unusually low so I have decided to give my figures for August since 2000

2000 - 87 (this included the 100th Birthday for the Queen Mum and I gave one engagement to all members of the family for the 4th August - which was 17 of these engagements because there was a 'balcony appearance'. These days I only give the figure to those mentioned specifically in the CC and not to 'other members of the RF')
2001 - 85

2002
-100 (a Jubilee Year with engagements still happening in the first week of August, including the Manchester Commonwealth Games)
2003 - 52

2004 - 36
2005 - 24
2006 - 26
2007 - 49
2008 - 108 (Anne and the Beijing Olympics added a few here while the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were on an overseas tour to the Solomon Islands)
2009 - 31

2010 - 22
2011 - 54
2012 - 117 (London Olympics added to this figure of course)
2013 - 29

2014 - 44 (with 27 of those on the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI)

There will be no update this week as the last entry in the CC was the 16th August when Divine Service was held at Balmoral.

It is rare for there to be a Sunday with the Queen in residence at Balmoral for there to be no entry in the CC about the church service but that is the case this week - so presumably there was also no church service even on the 23rd August.

If Cepe, or anyone else, has another online or print entries that suggest that there were engagements after the 16th August I would appreciate that.

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 31st August, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th September (again there may have been nothing.)

Still missing from earlier in the year – 22nd, 23rd, 24th July, 4th and 6th August.

Iluvbertie: Thanks, as usual.

I was interested to see a goose egg in the "Ceremony of the Keys" category, so I went to the searchable Court Circular and did a search back to '97 on KEYS. What was interesting to me is how irregular the practice is (and how devoted Anne is to jockeys ;)).

I'm guessing the ceremony happens more often, but is not always reflected in the CC? Particularly at Holyroodhouse? I was also surprised how rare it is for any of the family to visit the tower!

The Ceremony of Keys happens every night at the Tower. It's being done continuously for 700 years. It isn't really a ceremony that needs a Royal present for it. They also do a key ceremony in Edinburgh when the Queen does Scotland week in July.

The Tower and the Royal Family do not share the happiest of histories, I believe. Senior Yeoman Gaurds stand in for H.M do they not for the ceremony at the tower?

Yes - my point was that it makes the CC only sporadically. That the CC is highly variable even about regular, annual events.

If there isn't a royal present for the ceremony, why would it make the CC? Did this year's swan upping make the CC?

The Ceremony of the Keys is the formal closing of the Tower each night. The Queen has probably attended in person only a few times in her life. Next year I won't even include it at all as it is such an irregular royal event.

I get it and I think I even said that about the Tower (how rare, seldom or whatever). But the key exchange in Scottland... Why even want to argue about this? It was just an observation. Ignore it if you like.

The totals listed so far for September updated to Sunday evening Sydney time 6th September. There have been new engagements listed for a number of royals so the numbers are now:

The Queen - 2
Philip - 3
Charles - 8
Camilla - 3
William - 0
Kate - 0
Harry - 0
Andrew - 0
Beatrice - 0
Eugenie - 0
Edward - 25
Sophie - 23
Anne - 40*
Tim - 0
Richard - 30
Birgitte - 15
Edward - 10
Katherine - 0
Michael - 0
Marie-Christine - 0
Alexandra - 5

That gives a total of = 164 up from 136

The names in red are those who have had additional engagements listed. Anne's will certainly change later in the month when the breakdown of her engagements for her trip to the West Indies are spelt out.

I am still waiting confirmation that the FE listed engagements for the Duke of Gloucester for the 3rd September actually occurred. The CC hasn't been updated for that date as yet. As the CC updates I will indicate those events from the FE that then appear in the CC assuming they actually do an update.

Weekly update to 10th September, 2015

This update wouldn’t be possible at all without Cepe. The British Monarchy Website hasn’t updated the CC since the 30th August – that is nothing for two weeks but… there have been 65 engagements since then.

The busiest day this week was the 9th September with 22 engagements carried out between The Queen, Philip, Charles, Camilla, Andrew, Edward, Sophie, Anne, Richard and Birgitte. I, along with most if not all of you, read the DM article criticising Charles for not being at Balmoral on the 9th to celebrate The Queen’s achievement but no criticism for her other children who were also absent due to the range of activities they were undertaking elsewhere in the UK.

As September unfolds the pass should pick up – the Wessex children for instance will be back at school so they will undertake more duties while only the Queen and Philip will really be resting over the next month as they aren’t due to return to London until October.

FAILURE of British Monarchy Website to UPDATE CC

The weekly failure of the British Monarchy website: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th September.

Still missing from earlier in the year – 22nd, 23rd, 24th July, 4th, 23rd August and 3rd September. These are dates on which there were engagements for royals recorded in The Times but not on the website.

Reiterating - the CC on the British monarchy website has NOTHING since the 30th August. They really don't appear to care about public relations in this regard it seems - certainly this year it has been horrendous.
