"I have been here since Tuesday and walk among my ancestors. I imagine I have returned to Gustav the First time and this gives me an indescribable pleasure".
This is what Gustav III writes to his brother, Duke Karl. During Gustav III's time, Gripsholm experiences perhaps its most glorious period with a rich court life.
Gripsholm Castle is open daily in September and on weekends from October.

Gustav III's kitchen
Gustav III often traveled to Gripsholm Castle with his court, close to a hundred people. He had a kitchen furnished - Kronköket - where food was prepared during the court's stays in the years 1773–1785. Kronköket at Gripsholm Castle is housed in buildings from two different eras. Yttre Kronköket is located in a medieval stone house, perhaps the castle that Bo Jonsson Grip built in the late 14th century. The red-plastered grand piano where the inner kitchen and bakery are located was built in Gustav Vasa's time, probably in the 1550s. In the inner and outer kitchen, the food was cooked, the stoves are simple devices with recesses for the pans that were fired from below. In the Bakery, the temperature was lower, for the sake of the pastries. There is another stove and an oven. The long table tops are a few centuries older than Kronköket. They were originally workbenches from the old kitchen that was built on piles by the shore at Sjöporten.
Take the opportunity to "fika" in Gustav III's kitchen, Kronköket is open in connection with Gripsholm's autumn holidays 4-7 November.

Gripsholm Castle has the world's oldest National Portrait collection. Already in Gustav Vasa's time, there was a painting gallery here. The king took works of art to his newly built castle and in 1548 98 paintings hung in the castle, of which 23 portraits. During the second half of the 17th century, the art-interested national sink queen Hedvig Eleonora expanded the collection with a couple of hundred portraits. Most of them were family portraits. Gustav III added a series of portraits of the Riksdag and the collection thus also included portraits of individual Swedes and not only royalty. After Gustav III's death, more portraits were brought to Gripsholm, but it was not until 1822 that the portrait collection was to be formally established. Since 1881, the National Museum has been responsible for the collection. The collection contains paintings, sculptures and photos by a number of well-known artists throughout Swedish art history, such as David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Alexander Roslin, Ulrika Fredrika Pasch, Carl Larsson, Carl Wilhelmson, Maj Bring, Isaac Grünewald, Tyra Lundgren, Birgit Broms, Ola Billgren and Annika von Hausswolff.

Lennart Nilsson Centenary – exhibition at Gripsholm Castle
Lennart Nilsson is one of Sweden’s best-known photographers. This year’s summer exhibition at Gripsholm Castle presents some twenty of his famous portraits of royalty, prominent cultural figures and politicians.
It was thanks to his background in reportage photography that Nilsson was chosen to take the first really close-up portrait of a Swedish monarch. Unlike the court photographers of the time, he had not been trained to keep a respectful distance from his illustrious model. Without being inconsiderate to his subject, the young photographer succeeded in producing a penetrating and fascinating portrait of Gustav V, in which the light and shadows serve to outline the elderly king’s face. Nilsson subsequently received further commissions from the royal court for official portraits for postage stamps and for more informal images of the royal family at work and leisure.
The National Portrait Gallery collection now includes over 50 works by Lennart Nilsson.

The 2022 Portrait of Honour depicts the artist Britta Marakatt-Labba, known around the world for her embroidered images of Sami landscapes with both a poetic and a political message. The portrait is the work of Marja Helander, whose photographs of Sami landscapes, people and culture have won multiple awards.
The Swedish National Portrait Gallery collection is added to every year with a number of works, including the Portrait of Honour – a painting of a deserving Swedish woman or man.
The portrait joins the collection of the Swedish National Portrait Gallery and will be unveiled at Gripsholm Castle on 12 November.

Vasa 500 years. Roof in 1543
In the Drabant Hall at Gripsholm Castle there is a ceiling we know for sure dates from Gustav Vasa's time. The decorative painting is dated 1543, the year before the first construction phase of Gustav Vasa's Gripsholm was completed.
