San Telmo -or Montpensier- Palace (Seville)

The Palacio of San Telmo in Seville has been bought by Prince Antoine of France, Duke of Montpensier and his wife infanta Luisa of Spain (sister of Queen Isabel II). The duke bought the palace in 1844 but was already built in 1682. The original function of the building was to house a seafearing school. The explains the origin of the name San Telmo, as he is the patron of sailors. The school could only occupy the building in 1734 because architect Antonio Matías needed that time to work on all the details. The palace is considered as the finest example of baroque architecture in Seville. Today, the local government of Andalusia uses the palace.

In 1897 the palace was donated the the archdiocese. The gardens were donated to the city of Seville by princess Maria Luisa, which explains the name of the parc: parque de Maria Luisa.

Dear Friends, Can anyone give me information about visiting La Casita de Arriba at or near Escorial? I believe it is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays, but I need to know the hours it is open, available public transportation and so forth. We plan to be in Madrid on May 23 and would like to visit then. Any information will be very much appreciated.

Casa Palacio Hernán Cortés, (Seville)

Hernán Cortés´s palace; placed in Castilleja de la Cuesta, only 5 minutes from Seville (Spain), was the last residence from the conquest of mexico.

This building from the XVI century, with neomudéjar style, was later bougth by the duchy of Montpensier one of the most important families of Seville. Even if their residence used to be the Palacio de San Telmo, this palace was used as their summer house.

When their daugter Maria of Orleans was married with the king Alfonso XII she received the palace as a gift, but after her suddenlly dead , the building was given to Maria de las Mercedes ( princess of asturias), one of the king´s daugthers.

Finally the buiding was sell by Maria de las Mercedes to the irish nuns, whom from 1903 until now run a public school inside the palace.

Ponferrada Castle is located in El Bierzo, in the Province of Leon, Spain.

Ponferrada Castle is a Templar castle (Castillo Templario).
The castle was built by the Templar Knights in the 1100s to protect the pilgrims on the Way of St. James.

Ponferrada Castle was built over what was once a pre-Roman fort.

The castle has an irregular plan with double line of defense on the side facing the city of Ponferrada and only one facing the river Sil.

Ponferrada Castle's interior is divided in two different parts.
The Galician nobleman, Pedro Fernandez de Castro built the old castle.
The new castle was built by the Count of Lemos, Pedro Alvarez de Osorio and his grandson.

In 1486 Ponferrado Castle became property of the Crown. :crown7:

The Royal Castle of Olite is a former castle of the kings of Navarre, situated in northern Spain.

The first Olite Castle had been designated the "palace of the kings of Navarre" in 13th century documents.
It had been laid out on the site of a Roman praetorium of the 1st century A.D.

Olite Castle served as a residence for the governors during the kings' long absences in the country of France.

Queen Joanna II (reigned 1328-1349) and King Philip III of Evreux (reigned 1328-1343) and King Charles II (reigned 1349-1387) made improvements to Olite Castle.

King Charles III (reigned 1387-1425) and his wife, Queen Eleanor had additional improvements made to Olite Castle.
The French artists Jacob le Cote and Juan du Ruisel collaborated on the decoration.
Glass painters came from Aragon and Flanders.

In 1850, the city of Ponferrada began to sell the stones of the castle to build the walls of other buildings.

In 1924 the Templar Castle in Ponferrada was declared a National Monument and Historic Art.

Are there also other residences outside Spain that were sold? What happened to the Count and Countess of Barcelona's residences in Cannes and Rome during their exile?

Basilica of San Isidoro, León
Or the Pantheon of the Kings of León. This funeral chapel of the kings of León is one of the examples of surviving Romanesque art in León. The columns are crowned with rare Visigothic capitals, with floral or historic designs. The 12th century painted murals are in an exceptional state of preservation and consist of an ensemble of New Testament subjects along with scenes of contemporary rural life.

The Basilica suffered terrible damage by French troops during the French invasion and the graves were violated and ransacked .The royal bones were later gathered up and reburied together but it was impossible to determine who's remains were salvaged so great was the damage.

Documentary about the royal residences of Spain.

A villa in Normandy that once belonged to King Alphonso XIII is for sale. The villa -Manoir du Grand Bec- is located between Trouville-sur-mer and Villerville, next to Deauville, where the King went in summer- and is for sale for 5,5 million Euros.

The only minus: it has views to the harbor of Le Havre.
