BBC One - Elizabeth at 90 - A Family Tribute

A unique celebration of the Queen's ninety years as she reaches her landmark birthday in April. Film-maker John Bridcut has been granted special access to the complete collection of Her Majesty's personal ciné films, shot by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen herself, as well as by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Much of it has never been seen publicly before.

Various members of the Royal Family are filmed watching this private footage and contributing their own personal insights and their memories of the woman they know both as a member of their own close family and as queen.

Among those taking part are the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra, who has never before given an interview.

John Bridcut previously produced A Jubilee Tribute to the Queen by the Prince of Wales for BBC One in 2012, as well as The Prince and the Composer (BBC Two and Four, 2011), Charles at 60: The Passionate Prince (BBC One, 2008), and Queen and Country, BBC One's four-part series to mark the Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Nice to see Anne has given an interview for the BBC documentary - which leaves Edward as the only one who has not spoken on camera as yet for her 90th birthday. Also a treat to hear from Princess Alexandra and hear her personal stories of growing up with the Queen as a cousin. Will also be interesting to hear the Duke of Kent speak. Pity we have not heard anything from the Duke of Gloucester it would have be nice to complete the set of main working royals

THE Queen has given the BBC access to her home movie collection for a new documentary celebrating her 90th birthday.

Queen Elizabeth has lived in the spotlight nearly all of her life. Born a princess third in line to the throne, her ascension to the role of monarch at the tender age of 25 means Her Majesty’s public life has been widely documented ever since.

As a result, the world is well acquainted with the Queen’s public persona, but we know far less about the private Elizabeth.

So when film-maker John Bridcut was granted access to our monarch’s home movies for his latest documentary, Elizabeth At 90 – A Family Tribute, to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday, it meant he would be able to give audiences a never-seen-before glimpse into her personal life and off-duty persona.

Alongside these home movies, the documentary will include members of the royal family paying tribute to the Queen, not only as a monarch but also as a close family member.

Of course, we’ve seen the Windsors’ home movies before, since the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are keen amateur film-makers.

Many clips of their home life together were seen in the 2012 documentary that Bridcut made with Prince Charles, A Jubilee Tribute To The Queen By The Prince Of Wales. Bridcut also made 2002’s Queen And Country, a BBC1 series marking the Golden Jubilee, and 2008’s Charles At 60: The Passionate Prince, so he’s clearly forged a close relationship with the royal family and is trusted with their personal archive.

A glorious celebration of our monarch, these events are her own special gift to the nation, too.

I am loving this documentary as it's very personal and so lovely to see home videos.

I didn't know Edward sucked his thumb as a child. The clips of them all are so cute and the ones of the Queen as a little girl are lovely.

Total agree with you about Sarah chat to really like her ! I never realised how the queen of Denmark has quite an English accent when she speaks English lovely hearing her talk

I don't watch anything on the internet linked to from this site as the last time I was sent somewhere it was to a pornographic site (not intentional but enough that I had to report this site and to my school - happens again and I won't be able to come here at all based on the legal advice I have received from work. A lovely documentary and very personal in places, particularly witnessing Sarah Chatto and the Duke of Kent genuinely moved by what they see in the footage. I found Anne's response to the question about whether the Queen is an optimist an interestingly considered response. The shared viewing by Charles & the Queen was an inspired idea and the nearest we will get to an interview with HM.

I loved the BBC documentary and will watch it again. So much information and insight. Great to see HMQ and Charles interact. Sarah Chatto was a delight and loved all the other contributions. Definitely worth watching.

It is being repeated on Sunday at 16:35 with some additional footage from the BBC archive.

Without question the best programe on HMQ, and the British Royal Family ever made.

They are so normal it is nothing short of MIRACULOUS, as their unique position in this World could all too easily 'turn their heads'

As I said a while ago: The BBC is by far the best when it comes to royal documentaries/coverage, with the exception of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. I liked Elizabeth at 90 on Sky News too, but their coverage of today's events wasn't worth watching.

I had to download a VPN software to change my ip to a UK one then I could watch on the BBC site. I had to wait until after it's over. I just looked on YouTube, I didn't see it.

If you watched the one that Charles did for the diamond jubilee, a lot of this one is the same footage but with comments from Queen, Charles, Anne, Duke of Kent, Sarah Chatto, Princess Alexandra and the comedy duo of the Wales brothers.

I loved W&H commentary on Harry's christening-Will chase Zara around with Harry saying that could be last Christmas.
