The Nobel Prize 2013 - 2023

Interesting alterations to the placement of the royals at the Table of Honour in comparison to years past. The announcement that Prince Carl Philip's as well as Princess Madeleine's role would be reduced over time raised the question in my mind as to whether the King might finally cease putting his son ahead of the crown princess's consort in official precedence, but the new arrangement this year makes that impossible to distinguish.

There is only 1 person between Prince Daniel and The King, as well as only 1 person between The Crown Princess and The Queen. Doesn’t that mean he takes his wifes rank ?

Prince Carl Philip sits 3 persons away from The Queen and Princess Madeleine 5 persons away from The King.

Yes, for this year's banquet all three of the royal consorts appear to have taken their spouse's rank at the Table of Honour, and thus it is impossible to distinguish what their own rank is meant to be.

But in years past, the royal men were separated from the royal women on opposite sides of the Table of Honour, and on the men's side it was consistently Prince Carl Philip, rather than Prince Daniel, who was seated on the same side of the King corresponding to the Crown Princess's seat at the side of the Queen on the women's side.

Sad that Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson isn’t attending (though relived that it has nothing to do with her health). They may not be senior royals since a very long time but they are hugely popular her in Sweden.

It is interesting to hear about the popularity of Tord Magnuson. Princess Christina's popularity is easily understood given her lifetime of service to her country, but which qualities in her husband appeal to the general public?

Countess Bettina usually comes to Sweden already to attend the Nobel Lectures given by the Laureates at the Nobel Week, and meets the Laureates then. Countess Bettina speaks swedish, and also her children speak swedish. Count Björn Bernadotte has told that both his sisters have taught swedish to their children.

That is an excellent choice; in that case, perhaps the Lindau meetings can continue for many more decades to come.

Ebba Kleberg von Sydow and Emilia de Poret were at TV4's Nyhetsmorgon to speak about the dresses. They said that this was a very good year, so many had great dresses. They praised all dresses of the royal women, but when they were asked who was their favourite, both said: The crown princess. They said "The Crown Princess's dress will be iconic, which will be on display". Ebba Kleberg von Sydow was already yesterday evening at TV4 to speak about the dresses. She said that on the point scale from 1 to 5, Victoria's dress is somewhere 12 or 13.

Svensk Damtidning writes, that Victoria's dress is a tribute to Sara Danius - who wore bow blouses, and women wore bow blouses to support Sara, when she resigned from the Swedish Academy. Sara passed away in October. Svensk Damtidning says that the dress is likely designed by Pär Engsheden, a close friend of Sara Danius. When there is very quiet among the designers, then the outfit is usually designed by Pär Engsheden, who doesn't inform the media of his designs.

Sara Danius even designed a bow blouse for Camilla Thulin, and modelled it at Camilla Thulin's fashion show in 2018. Camilla Thulin had designed many bow blouses to Sara Danius.

Nobel Laureate tried to persuade the king to stop hunting
What do you do if you get the king to the table?
Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel laureate in literature, took the opportunity to question one of the majesty's greatest interests.
- At one point during the conversation, I tried to persuade the king to stop hunting, she says to the Polish news site Onet.
- I had no idea what you were talking to a king about, but it went very easily, says Olga Tokarczuk, the 2018 prize-winner in literature, to the Polish news site Onet.
With the king on his right, Tokarczuk took hier seat at the Table of Honour during yesterday's Nobel Banquet.
Afterwards, she describes her table neighbor as "very nice, intelligent and warm to talk to". According to Onet, among other things, they talked about one of the king's greatest interests.
- One time during the conversation I tried to persuade the king to stop hunting, but I'm not sure I succeeded. Swedes have a great tradition of hunting - that you have to control nature, because otherwise it runs crazy, says Tokarczuk, to the news site.
The Polish author also had a lot to talk to another Swedish royal during dinner.
- I also talked a lot with Prince Daniel on my left, we even promised that we would talk on later, Tokarczuk says.
She has previously stated that she will use her prize money to build a foundation, which will, among other things, investigate animal rights issues.

Victoria's clothing selection: Sara Danius's iconic bow blouse
Crown Princess Victoria arrives at the Nobel Dinner at the Palace in Stockholm wearing a red long dress with a bow blouse in the same color.
Something that can be seen as a tribute to Sara Danius, the former permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy who passed away in October.
In November 2017, in conjunction with the metoo, the Swedish actors gathered behind the call #Super silence to read testimony about abuse.
Among the audience at the Södra Teatern in Stockholm were Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria.
- It's a very important campaign, Victoria said at the time.
At the same time, the blouse showed Sara Danius's genius and taste from being boring and old-fashioned to a symbol of women's struggle and change.
The Nordic Museum in Stockholm even exhibited Sara Danius' self-designed bow blouse until December 1 to honor the professor, author and literary critic. She passed away on October 12 at the age of 57.
During Wednesday's traditional Nobel dinner at the Palace in Stockholm, the crown princess wore a long dress that was topped off with a bow blouse - both dress and blouse in red.
The choice of clothing can be seen as a tribute to Sara Danius.
When Expressen talks to Margareta Thorgren, the head of information at the court, she says:
- At all events, the royal family takes aim and message into account. Even clothing choices can be a part of communication.

Expressen's fashion expert on the clothes at Nobel Dinner: "Two fives"
On Wednesday evening, the king gave a traditional dinner for this year's Nobel Laureates.
The evening began with the royal family having a smaller reception in Prince Bertil's apartment for the prize winners and their respective.
Then the royal family and Nobel laureates marched into the banquet hall. In the Palace Ballroom, the White Sea, they greeted other invited guests representing the Riksdag, government, diplomatic corps, academies, research and science and the Nobel Foundation.
- A very well thought out clothing choice with regard to the bow blouse, which is a clear tribute to Sara Danius, says Expressen's fashion expert Emma Danielsson about Crown Princess Victoria's clothing choice.
Crown Princess Victoria
Points: 5
Wow! After wearing a dramatic dress at the Nobel party, Victoria continues to impress with yet another bold clothing choice that is just right in time. Here she reuses a red skirt and matches with a top signed Pär Engsheden. Both the volume in the sleeves, which is a strong trend right now, and the pink accessories show what trend look she has. It is also a very thoughtful choice of clothes with regard to the tie blouse which is a clear tribute to Sara Danius, which is fantastic to see.
Prince Daniel
Points: 5
Prince Daniel is as handsome as ever! The jacket has a good fit, the pants the right length, and even the small details sit where they should, such as the hand knotted bow, for example. He really knows the art of dressing exemplarily on solemn occasions.
Queen Silvia
Points: 4
The queen fits incredibly well in bright colors, and this blue shade is also a trend color this coming spring. The dress may not be as pompous as Victoria's, but the lovely color combined with the beautiful diadem and the sparkling necklace gives an elegant and glamorous feel.
King Carl Gustaf
Points: 3
The jacket sits very nicely over the shoulders and the pants are quite wide. However, they are a few inches too long at the bottom which makes them quite puffy over the shoes, as well as the handkerchief protruding too far and colliding with his medals. But otherwise he looks really handsome and well dressed.
Princess Madeleine
Points: 4
Madeleine has chosen a romantic and elegant creation created by Ida Sjöstedt, and if there is someone who both likes and dresses well in the romantic look then it is Madeleine. The style feels wonderfully light and springy in the prevailing winter darkness and the soft hair set will be the perfect complement to this type of dress.
Princess Sofia
Points: 4
Although Sofia's dress has long sleeves, it is strikingly similar to Madeleine's bright dress, which is also embellished by floral applications. They have even chosen the same braided bags from Bottega Veneta. However, it is impossible to decide who wins the style match because they both look very beautiful in their romantic creations!
Prince Carl Philip
Points: 4
Carl Philip usually earns high marks for his impeccable style and this time is no exception. The only thing that pulls down the grade from the full pot is that the jacket looks slightly short, which makes the white vest stick a little too far. But the impression overall is that he looks incredibly handsome.

Could you please identify the two medals that Prince Daniel is wearing on his left chest ?
They're most likely the Ruby Jubilee Medal of King Carl XVI Gustav and the 70th Birthday Medal of King Carl XVI Gustav.

Great to see the photos - I always enjoy seeing the royals in their finery at the Nobel Prize.

Svensk Damtidning points out a thing, which I noticed when I watched the Prize ceremony: The king went to sit to a wrong chair, to queen Silvia's chair. The king has on the previous years sat in front of Victoria, and he should have sat there also this year. But he went to queen Silvia's chair, which had the cushion queen Silvia always uses because of her back.
The queen notices this, turns to the king and says a few words but the King's Song starts. But the king thought that it wasn't a big thing, when they sit down, he takes the cushion and puts it to queen Silvia's chair. Daniel and Victoria change a few words.

Victoria's Nobel Prize ceremony dress is on the list of hits.
The Crown Princess made to say the least a big impression when she showed up during the Nobel party in her black and white dress with puff sleeves. The asymmetrical Noble dress became a hot topic among fashion experts and Victoria was utterly radiant in creation designed by Selam Fessahaye.

When December comes, we all need a little light in the darkness – and this year perhaps more than ever before. To bring some more light and hope to our lives, about fifteen places (Stockholm City Hall, Sergels Torg, the Concert Hall, the Royal Dramatic Theatre, the Stockholm City Museum and the Nobel Prize Museum etc.) around Stockholm will be lit up for Nobel Week Lights Stockholm on 5-13 December as part of the 2020 Nobel Week.

With everything going on this year I almost forgot about the Nobels.

It will be such an odd year not to see the galas in Sweden and gowns and such. The big royal event of the year that sticks out the most to me for us missing.

Glad they have found safe ways to still honor those who won this year.

Margareta Thorgren:
- With the new restrictions, it will be a completely digital broadcast. As the King will not be able to award the Nobel Prize to the Nobel Laureates this year, he will instead send a digital greeting to the Nobel Laureates.
The prize winners have already received their prizes, including through Swedish embassies around the world.

Svensk Damtidning speculates, what kind of dress Victoria would have had at the Nobel Prize ceremony, if it would have been held as usual. Svensk Damtidning's sources say that Victoria has been in contact with swedish Totême, the brand of Elin Kling and Karl Lindman, which was praised as Designer of the Year at the ELLE gala this year. Whether it will be a Totême dress at next year's Nobel instead remains to be seen.

The Stockholm City Hall looks lovely. Usually the flowers at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony come from San Remo, but not this year, the pandemic put a stop to this as well.

I realize what's going on in the world, but I think it would have been nice for the SRF to wear their gala outfits for the message. The whole thing was scaled back as it is, and I don't think it would have been flaunting excess or anything. They are the Nobel Prizes, and it would have a little more light in December.
