As for the idea of hoping that the royal ladies will wear new dresses this year, I guess you can hope, but I wouldn't count on it. I also read somewhere that Queen Silvia has never worn a new dress to the Nobel Prize in all the years that she has been Queen, so I'm not hopeful that this year will be any different.

Have the ladies worn new dresses to anything else this year? It doesn't seem like they have to me, but then I could have blinked and missed it! If they haven't then I would say chances are better that we will see them in something new.

Of course Queen Silvia has never worn the same dress twice for the main Nobel event.
But it's true that she has very rarely worn a NEW dress. As far as I can tell, the only two times she did so was in 1997 (The black & turquoise patterned dress) and in 1995 (The pink & grey dress with the billowing skirt). I also think that's the ONLY time she's ever worn that one! On the other end of the scale, last year's glittering mint green Nobel dress was a disappointment to me - elegant but rather subdued and also worn on numerous big occasions in recent years before.
So I hope that this year, it will at least be a dress we have not seen TOO many times before - for example the beautiful lavender dress first worn during the state visit to Finland.

An interesting article I found today from BBC News
Nobel judge steps down in protest
A member of the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize for Literature, has resigned in protest at the choice of last year's winner.
Knut Ahnlund said he was stepping down because the 2004 award went to Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek.
The Academy member called Jelinek's work "a mass of text shovelled together without artistic structure".
His attack on Jelinek's books and plays came days before the announcement of the 2005 winner, due on Thursday.

Harold Pinter won the Nobel Prize in Literature - finally someone I know I've read something by. Now I only have to remember what...

I am very excited!!I just now found out(very late I know) that I shared a professor with the one of the 2005 Nobel Prize of Chemistry winners. It's strange but I feel excited and very happy for my former professor (whom I love dearly), how proud he must feel to have one of his students actually win the Nobel Prize!!!

I was just thinking about Madeleine's dress and in a way she sort of has to get a new one! She can't wear dresses that she's worn to previous nobels, so those three dresses are out and she can't wear the blue and white German state visit dress because it's not dressy enough for nobel....and the fact that she's worn it like a million times. There aren't a lot more gala dresses that's she worn and didn't she have a new dress ready last year but couldn't make it? I know I'm just rambling but just a thought. *shock* We might actually get to see a new dress this year on Madeleine!

That is a good thought, but it does depend on what you mean by "new".
She could go and buy a completely new dress for this years Nobel, or she could wear the dress (if indeed she had one already chosen) that she was meant to wear to last years Nobel but as she didn't go she didn't wear it.

True, but it doesn't matter if she wears the dress she was going to last year because we haven't seen her in it yet. BTW, does Madeleine also get her gala dresses custom-made like Victoria or is it "off the rack."?

That's what i meant by "new" she can get a completely new one or she can wear last years one that would stil be new to us as we have never seen it.
I think Madeleine can wear either custom made or "off the rack", wasn't it her 2002 Nobel dress that she designed herself and had made? I am not sure if her others were made for her or "off the rack"

Yes, SVT 1 and 2 usually broadcast live from the Award Ceremonies in the Concert Hall and the Banquet at the City Hall. Maybe SVT24 will also broadcast something, I haven't checked for that info yet.

I think King Harald also attends. I don't know about the rest of the Norwegian Royal Family. I do know that some part of the ceremony takes part in Norway though.
