On This Day: Swedish Royal Family

September 19

1973

Today in Royal History is the 46th Enthronement Anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Upon the death of his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf on 15 September 1973, Crown Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden, Duke of Jämtland became King of Sweden and took the regnal name Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. He is the youngest child and only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His father died when he was just 9 months old.

He took the required Konungaförsäkran or regal assurance during a meeting of the cabinet and afterwards, was enthroned in a simple ceremony at the throne room of the Royal Palace in Stockholm on 19 September 1973 with the crown jewels displayed on cushions to the right and left of the royal throne, but were never given to the king.

She was also sister of Queen Dorothea of Denmark and Norway, wife of King Kristian III. King Gustav was instrumental in securing the throne for his brother-in-law by helping him crush the rebellious peasants of Scania during the devastating civil war called the Count's feud.

King Carl Gustaf's great-grandfather. .

My favorite multi-generation photo out there.

https://theimperialcourt.tumblr.com/...great-grandson

Sadly of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Carl Gustaf's father would be in his life the shortest, dying before his first birthday. Carl Gustaf was four when Gustav V died and 27 when his grandfather died.

When Gustav V died he had (living) 2 sons, 4 grandsons, 1 granddaughter and 13 great grand-children. One son and of course Carl Gustaf's father pre-deceased him.

His wife Victoria died in 1930.

The formidable Hedvig Eleonora would, because the early deaths of her husband and son and the long foreign absence of her grandson, help rule the Swedish empire for a large part of her life and was for over 60 years the First lady of the realm.

Hedwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp was a very dominant queen by all accounts!

Hedvig Eleonora was the prime example of the formidable noble ladies who had to take over and run the family estates when their husbands were away in the almost constant wars that Sweden fought during the second half of the 17th century and the first 20 years of the 18th century. Other battleaxes include the Countesses Christina Piper and Margareta von Ascheberg who both successfully ran and even increased the family estates during the absence of their husbands. The latter even took over as a colonel and regimental chief after her husband died in 1700.

Hedwig Eleonora was also muted in the 1660's as possible bride for King Charles II of England but I think the queen was enjoying power too much in Sweden

Although she fought for her right to be included in her son's regency council she was never a particularly actively member and seemed to be there more to protect the interests of her son than to further her own interests. I'm sure that she relished in her position as the most prominent adult in the Swedish empire but not wanting to abandon her infant son probably played a part in her turning the marriage offer down.

Her sister,Julie Clary also became a queen when her husband,Joseph Bonaparte became King of Naples and Spain.

The Clary reputedly had Irish ancestry.

Yes, there is some belief that their family left Ireland in the 1600's and moved to France for business. Which ancestor, and the actual story, doesn't seem that clear. The name has Irish origins.

He was killed in Norway. He was laying siege to the fortress of Fredriksten as part of the Great North war. He was killed while he was inspecting his trenches, hit in the head by a projectile. The siege, and basically the Great North war, ended with his death. His armies retreated following his death.

He was unmarried, and the throne passed to his sister Ulrika Eleonora.

And on the 150th anniversary of his demise, November 30 1868, his statue was innaugerated in the Kungsan in Stockholm.
