June 6 - Sweden's National Day (2010-2024)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
As a Finn, I was incredibly touched about Victoria's speech. She said at her speech:
"Just a few days ago, our neighbor Finland celebrated 100 years of independence. Finland and Sweden have strong ties historically. Very many Swedes have their roots in Finland. Here in Järfälla, more than every tenth inhabitant has a connection with Finland.
Due to the Finnish anniversary year, I participated a couple of months ago in a wreath laying ceremony at the Finnish monument in Stockholm. There I met some of the surviving Swedish veterans who participated as volunteers in the Finnish Winter War 1939-1940. It was a meeting that made a great impression on me - those soon 100 years old Swedes, who once asked the question "What can I do to help?"
For them, the answer was to join as volunteers in Finland in the war. Others donated money or made civilian efforts. Many chose to open their homes for one of the 70,000 Finnish children who came to Sweden during the war years. Children who often could not speak a word Swedish. Children who brought an address tag around their neck".

The king's speech
H.M. Konungens tal i Växjö på Nationaldagen, tisdag den 6 juni 2017 - Sveriges Kungahus
Translation

The sun welcomed Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel to the National Day celebration in Järfälla. They arrived at Görväln Castle just after half past twelve and were welcomed by several thousand people who were celebrating the national day in the castle park. Several children ran to the Crown Princess couple when they arrived and left presents in the form of drawings.
Then Victoria and Daniel sat and listened to several musical performances, including a children's choir from the Iljansbodaskolan and Kolarängskolan.
Victoria and Daniel applauded the children who sang from the scene.
In her speech, Victoria also talked about how Sweden responded to the terror attach at Drottninggatan in April.
- Terror aims to create fear and fragmentation. But the Swedes responded by showing courage and cohesion. We should remember that and be proud of today, on Sweden's National day.
After her speech, Victoria went down from the stage and sat next to Prince Daniel. They jointly sang the national anthem together with the people.
After that, students at Järfälla Gymnasium performed Syrian music, something that seemed to be appreciated by Victoria and Daniel, who both seemed to like the music.

I agree. I also think (and I suppose I'm the sole human being on this planet) that it's incredibly boring that it's only Estelle (and now Oscar) every single year. I simply don't care for them.
Hopefully a little alternation will occur in the years to come. There are more grandchildren around (of course also depending on the coverage the other parents want for their children, I understand that).

I agree - This is a National Day celebration, and right now, the King is still on the throne so the focus should still be on the King’s family, hence his three kids & five grandkids should participate and be recognized.
When Victoria ascends the throne, then all the focus can be switched to her family only.

Today is the National Day celebration, an official celebration. The royal couple and crown princess couple are the official representants of the royal family. The king's birthday is more a family celebration, that is the day when the other grandchildren could be seen if they are "on the mood".

All members of the royal house- (King, Queen, Victoria, Daniel, Carl Philip, Sofia, and Madeleine) are official representatives of the realm, what differs among them are the number of engagements carried out.

I agree with other posters, who would have liked to see the other kids, pictures at least, always seeing Estelle, and Oscar only, is incredibly boring, and at this stage all the kids have the same rank- grand kids of the King, HRH's, princes/esses, and dukes/duchesses. Maybe things will change as they grow up, but one group picture would have been nice

Barbro Hultman, a royal expert who has been a journalist and also worked at the royal court and is quite close to the royal family (and has written the book "I den kungliga kulissen), pointed just out at Expressen's live studio, that the royal court/family doesn't do anything by chance, everything is planned. That is why there aren't any other grandchildren than Estelle at the cortege. Hultman said that Estelle will be trained differently than the other grandchildren, it has already been seen many times that that she can handle these kind of situations and the court doesn't want anyone to take the attention from her, because she is the heir to the heir.

We can also see how the royal court emphasizes the role and work of Victoria and Daniel, and here is a good indication of it

Thanks for providing this information :)!! as always you provide a lot of information to this forum, but still if they couldn't attend the cortege one picture would have been very welcome. However....if they are training her to believe she's more important than other people, already at the age of 5, then, God help her, and her reign

GEN-PEP is a non-profit organisation which of course has the right to promote their activity. They have social media and use it to get more people to work to that all children and young people in Sweden should have the ability and desire to live an active and healthy life. Of course they use an event like this to show photos of their work.

Barbro Hultman told at the studio previously today, that coffee is sold at the courtyard at Open Palace and when she was still working, the income was donated to Crown princess Victoria's Fund.

Wonderful outfits and a very nice weather..... congratulations Sweden

Not like the woman's is any more fashionable and they have to wear it. If the Norweigan royal men can bite the bullet, the Swedes can too :flowers:

I don't get the whole issue with the kids. Oscar was too young for the carriage, not hard to think Alexander wouldn't go either. As for photos, Victoria and Daniel chose to release pictures. I doubt anyone stopped the other couples. Alex is a bit young and he wouldn't be in costume anyways. Leonor wpuld be cute, but maybe her parents wanted to keep private. They do release photos. Since neither Sofia or Alex were at the gates like last year, perhaps he was ill. Or just not in mood to be on show.

I find it funny people have such a problem with focus on Estelle. Thinking she will be spoiled or something. Yet I hear none of this on British boards. I never see Williams cousins being defended, saying they should be treated equally. Or George being spoiled as treated differently then other great grandkids. I believe the words we should just be lucky they appear on balcony. I don't see a call for martga Louise's kids to get treated the same as Haakon, or the kids of the infantas, or so on. Not sure why Sweden any different.

Okay that aside, great photos. Estelle sure is a little star. Happy to see all the adults. Great happy day for the country.

Estelle was at the cortege in 2013, she was only a week older than Oscar is now. She attended then also at the opening of the Open Palace. But she Victoria's first child and her heir.
Last year the court told at the program of the day that Carl Philip and Sofia would open the gates to the Open Palace. They decided to take Alexander there too. This year at the program was told that Carl Philip would open the gates alone.

I mentioned Alex being there last year. And noted Sofia wasn't at the gate either. Suggested one or both wasn't feeling up to it.

Not all babies are the same. Just becayse Estelle was able to handle carriages at that age, doesn't mean Oscar or Alexander would. If Alex wasn't up for the gate earlier all the more reason not to push carriage.

My point being, it seems only in Sweden do people think it's a snub to the other kids, and Estelle will be spoiled due to it. No problem of such treatment with other royal families.

Obviously Chris came later to the Royal Palace, because he isn't at the group photo with the GEN-PEP staff.

"Johan then thought I was completely crazy when I wanted to go down to Djurgårdsbron and wave to the royals. He gladly stayed at home and fixed the food. Hanna and I took the 6-year-olds and there was a long wait (just over 20 minutes is long for a 6 year old) before the horses and carriages finally arrived on Strandvägen with waving princes and princesses. Kind Prince Daniel saw us standing there at the front and hinted to Victoria and Estelle, who waved happily to us. Oh! The girls became very happy: "Mom, Mom - Estelle Waved To Us"! And yes, my daughter can name all the princes and princesses. It may be because I read Svensk Damtidning aloud for breakfast on Wednesdays at home - and of course, for all TV broadcasts I have done and about which she has heard a lot of talk at home.

The most cruel aspect of hereditary monarchy IMHO is the fact that some children/grandchildren in the Royal Family are de jure and de facto "more important than the others". If I were a child growing up in a Royal Family and were not the firstborn, I'm not sure I would be able to cope with being treated differently than my elder sibling.

It is the rule of a monarchy

the king and the heir are the most important people in the country and in the family they cannot avoid this or we are in the republic

The official website of the Swedish Football Association tells about the visit the Swedish Men’s Football National Team players Mikael Lustig, Christoffer Nyman och Robin Olsen made to GEN-PEP’s football field at the Open Palace.
At the video is first interviewed GEN-PEP's project leader Carolina Klüft, who tells about GEN-PEP and how they work that the children in Sweden would exercise at least 60 minutes in every day. She is asked about what it means that the National Team footballers came to play football there. Carolina says: "It means very much, some of the young girls have been waiting for their visit (There were girls from Futebol dá força) and then we could see some matches with the players and prince Daniel. It is very much appreciated, we are proud of our National Team and wish them luck. That they came to warm up with us and to show that the health of the childen and young people is important, it means very much to us". The interwiever says that prince Daniel even took the jacket off. Carolina says: "The prince thinks it is great to get some exercise, he is very passionate about Generation Pep and everything what we do. A real driving force who spreads much enthusiasm around him. We got proof of that at the football field today".
The footballers are interviewed, they are asked how Daniel played. One of the players says: "He chose the right team. No, he has good feet, a good technique and was good in tactics. He was skillful". The players are asked about that GEN-PEP wants children to move at least 60 minutes a day, what they think about that? One player says: "It is a fantastic initiative. It’s clear that all children must move and exercise. I think it is a great idea. It was fun to be there and support them". And the other player says: "Like said, it was fun to be there, Klüft and prince Daniel are doing the right job, it was fun".

It's just a matter of explaining it the right way to the kids. Estelle as grandchild of Carl Gustav isn't any more important than Oscar, Leonore, Nicolas, Alexander and the new baby. Estelle as second heir to the king IS more important then her brother and cousins who all are behind her in line to the throne. Private life and working life are two different shoes.

Seeing that national day is an important day for the country of which Carl Gustav is the king, it's only natural that the focus is more on Victoria than on Carl Philip and Madeleine or more on Estelle than her brother and cousins, because they are the official heirs and being there, smiling, waving and posing for the perfect picture is work for the king and his heirs, whereas everyone else just can tag along but isn't really necessary.

The kings birthday or wedding anniversary is contrary to the national day a private event. There Victoria is just one of the kings three kids and Estelle is one of five (soon six) grandchildren. The fact that the focus then is also more on here is just due to her being the oldest, who most likely attends these events. It's as simple as that.

Seriously! So are they going to banish the other Grandkids from appearances so as not to take attention from Estelle? Is that why Alexander was not seen at the balcony during the King’s birthday in April?

I think another reason the focus is on Estelle is the question about the apanage. One politician in Sweden wanted no money going to Carl Philip and Madeleine:

Robert Hannah: Stoppa apanaget till Carl Philip och Madde | Kungligt | Expressen

Putting all the grandchildren on display could re-open this issue of the government providing support of royals who will never see the throne. I think a similar issue was raised about the Danish Royal Family with Margrethe's many grandchildren. If appearances are planned as stated in a previous post, this could be part of the reason. Alexander was not seen at the visit of the men's national hockey team at the Royal Palace. Estelle and Oscar were there.

Seriously! So are they going to banish the other Grandkids from appearances so as not to take attention from Estelle? Is that why Alexander was not seen at the balcony during the King’s birthday in April?

No, the king's birthday was a family celebration. It was Carl Philip's and Sofia's choice not to take Alexander out of his pram. As we saw for example at the king's birthday on 2015, Leonore was there too. But as Barbro Hultman explained, at official events the focus will on Victoria, the heir to the throne, and her children, and more of them on Estelle. The King's 70th birthday was an official celebration.
Just like KitKat2006 explained, Estelle as the grandchild of private citizen Carl Gustaf Bernadotte isn't more important than the other grandchildren, but as the grandchild of HM The King of Sweden, the things are totally different because she is the daughter of the heir, and Estelle is treated other way than the other grandchildren.

Oscar and the Westling were also at the Royal Palace before the cortege left to Skansen. Perhaps they were also at the car behind the cortege and took Estelle home to Haga, when she left the cortege.
