Svenska Dagbladet's Perfect Guide has interviewed Peter "Foppa" Forsberg when he was in Philadelpia.
Here, too, the famous competition temperament emerges. A winning instinct that resulted in two Olympic golds, two World Cup golds, two Stanley Cup wins and now an investor career stretching from an international shoe company to a Swedish watch brand.
- I can be half-hearted in business if someone does something questionable legally, he says. As if someone was stealing a deal in front of his nose. But as a player I was more aggressive because everything was so black and white. You won or lost. After all, business is about getting both parties happy.
Two hours earlier, he walked through the Philadelphia Flyers' home arena. In the parking lot, a bunch of hockey fans raise their eyes from the gas grill, knocking out their arms and shouting "FORSBERG!" Down in the catacombs, a caretaker with the mop in the bucket stops, suddenly gets a glimpse of Foppa and gives Forsberg a hug. Outside the dressing room, a coach exclaims “Godfather!” And takes the Swede in his arms. Although Forsberg only played under two seasons in the Philadelphia Flyers, he was treated like a legend. When the Gritty mascot enters with a TV team in the box, the audience cheers louder than when the home team enters.
Peter Forsberg himself sits with his hand in a popcorn bowl and philosophizes on his entrepreneurial philosophy.
- Those I go into business with must have the same passion as myself. If you played hockey with someone who didn't want to cover shots with the skull, it was not good. There must be the same passion.
In 2018, he joined as co-owner of the Swedish watch brand Carl Edmond, founded by Stockholm-based entrepreneur Ali Nouri 2017.
With 13 NHL seasons and a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame, Peter Forsberg is one of the greatest Swedish sports icons of all time. Growing up in Örnsköldsvik, ice hockey became a way to be able to be yourself.
- Outside the rink, I was incredibly shy and didn't dare say anything. But on the ice there were clear rules to follow and I understood how things worked. There I got an outlet for my feelings. Hockey has helped me a lot. Just having a safe place where you feel you belong.
Many big sports stars find it difficult to find their identity after the career. For Peter Forsberg - who, as an active player, started investing in real estate and importing a new kind of rubber boats that were nicknamed Foppa Slippers - the transition was easier.
- I got involved in activities outside the hockey ten years before I stopped playing. But when I temporarily quit in 2001, I felt it. I was home all year and it was depressing. It was hard to walk the streets of Denver and meet people. I could play, but didn't. I understand those who get it a little difficult in their everyday lives when they leave.
When the career ended in 2011, Peter Forsberg sat in the school bench.
- I went to a so-called MDA - a management and financial education for athletes who will start their new lives. It was good, not just for the education, but for getting a sense of belonging and not being alone in that.
In the fall 2018, Peter Forsberg moved with his family to Switzerland. The shoe brand Inuikii is headquartered in Zurich and together with fiance Nicole Nordin he is a co-owner and partner. He describes a cautious attitude in business.
- I can't go back and play hockey. When the career is over, the money stops coming. I won't end up on the street. But then we have a real estate company as a safe investment, so we have been able to take some risks with startups.
Peter Forsberg sits on the bus north. He wonders if, in his quest to constantly improve, he may have been tough on himself.
- I never thought I was good. I never watched videos with myself and thought I was good. I was good in two games in my career. "God how good I was today" I had never been able to say.
