Danish Crown Princely Couple Business Visit to Sweden: May 29-30, 2017

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Anne Wessel, 77, was one of those who met Daniel and Mary when they visited Aleris Båthöjden Plaza retirement home.
- It was very fun to meet him. He was nice, says Anne Wessel.
Before Prince Daniel continued his tour, he suggested to Anne that they could take a photo together. The Prince hold Anne when they posed for her camera.
- He held me and then he said that "Crown Princess Victoria may get a little jealous". Then I said she will not be. She is not such. She is so nice and sweet, says Anne.
Daniel and Mary got a tour of the accommodation and the opportunity to discuss current issues in care of the elderly.
They also watched two specially designed bicycles in the project "Cycling without age". It is a Danish initiative, which means that a volunteer driver drives two elderly people in a form of bicycle taxi.
- They can take a trip outdoors and experience the feeling of freedom, says founder Ole Kassow.
Daniel tried the bikes together with Mary.
- This was almost a little cozy.
Daniel praised Ole Kassow and the other employees in the project for the initiative.
- What a fantastic activity, he said.

When Victoria and Mary left their tour at Illums Bolighus and went out to Hamngatan, the alarm went on at the store - and it sounded loud! Victoria looked "shocked" and joked with Mary.
- You have not taken anything?"
The duo laughed while the alarm ended.

Victoria looked so serious on the arrival, that I was wondering, if she had got some bad news.

:previous: That's true. Especially in Copenhagen.
You really have to look out when you cross the streets, lest you are torpedoed by bicycles with retirees sitting in the front!

But it works actually.
It's a fast, cheap and efficient way to let them have some fresh air. And especially for those suffering from dementia and Alzheimers. They are taken for tours in areas they at least used to be familiar with and that stimulates them and the many impressions on such a ride is also mentally exhausting, so they sleep better.
Apart from that a ride on a bicycle also tends to be smoother than being pushed around on the sidewalk.
And for those who are doing the pedaling, it's very good exercise!

Thank for all the pictures and information posted here :flowers:

Mary indeed looked delicious tonight. I like that cool gown a lot!

Now Frederik & Mary's packed Danish business visit is over. Once again, they have done the very best in the lead for a large Danish business promotion abroad. Beside that they have the delight that Sweden's Daniel and Victoria accompanied them, and it has been obvious how much the two couples enjoy each other's company and that they are very close. Their body language tells you.

Frederik and Mary must travel home tonight or early tomorrow morning because Frederik is Denmark's regent from tomorrow of and also has an official event.

Goodnight everybody.

What a busy schedule for these two days.
I wonder if they think themselves they could do everything in depth.

The two couples seem to have the same work ethic and zest for life. I loved to see them mix-up.
They are true ambassadors of the popular Scandinavian way of life.

I wondered what language they speak among each other. I heard Mary speak English.
Don't Danish and Swedish speaking people understand eachother? I think I'm basing this on the TV series The Bridge, which isn't very wellfounded offcourse.
Is it possible for non-native speaker Mary to understand Swedish the way Frederik would?

M&F of course didn't go to Sweden to have a merry time with V&D. This was very much about money. Export and import.

Sweden is the second largest export market for Denmark, after Germany. Some 16 % of our total export go to Sweden. But that number has fallen, mainly because Danish businesses have focused on other markets, in particular China. - With considerable success.
China is now the seventh largest market, and growing.

FYI. USA is the third largest market and Britain is the fourth.

So the visit was very much about beefing up the current export to Sweden and introducing new concept as ready-made packages, in particular within health and care.
Sweden of course is interested in increasing their export to Denmark, typically in regards to ready made products

I can't say how the Swedish economy is doing right, except that it's growing. But the Danish economy is thundering ahead!
The unemployment rate has dropped to below 4% which means all employable have a job. In fact the companies are screaming for workers, especially within the industry, which is home-sourcing big time these years (*) and within logistics. Also the agricultural sector is in need of people, but that's more for a few months at a time.
So we are seeing an increased number of Spaniards, Italians and Greeks moving up here and finding jobs.
Those with an education and qualifications are first, then come those with experience within a given field
(Within the fields mentioned above, i.e. production and logistics) and proficiency in English in regards to speaking and reading English is a big advantage.
The more menial jobs with no particular skills have already been taken.

(*) After a number of years where businesses out-sourced, especially within the industry, the plants are now moving home, where they are highly automated, requiring a flexible and at least fairly well educated workforce. Who can plan, set up their own schedule and work on their own. And as needed in co-operation with other production teams. That goes down to unskilled level.
Where I work most of the workforce are (on paper, but they have courses and experience) are unskilled and they work the way I just described.

Karolinska University Hospital has a good article with many photos about Daniel's and Mary's visit. The article tells that the interest for this visit was great for patients, the staff and the hospital itself.

Victoria and Frederik discussed the Swedes' love for candy during one of the events.
- Yes, you Swedes like candy. My grandmother, Queen Ingrid, always had a special Swedish candy at home, Frederik said, describing the taste and shape.
- It must have been gelehallon (jelly raspberry)!, said Victoria.
- Yes, it was. And gingerbread!, said Frederik.

Haha, that photo is brilliant! It's definitely one of my favourite mixed royal photos. :D
I've always thought that it's so nice that most of the Scandinavian royals get on well with each other. I enjoyed seeing the interactions between the two RFs during this visit.

:previous: What a lovely set of photos. They encapsulate the essence of a friendship started when Frederik and Victoria were young heirs and now their partners have joined them and, instead of things being a little more reserved and adult, they are all a bunch of kids sharing their "in" jokes.

I find that sort of friendship is very rare and much to be admired. I think the spouse's link is that they are the newcomers to this royal life and by the looks of the humour, they have shared more than sensible helping hints with each other. All those photos tell the same story and I find myself laughing at Mary sitting in the modern rickshaw like a kid on a bus, her feet swinging in the air as the 'floor' is nowhere to be found.

In 20 minutes from now DR1 will show a 30 minutes docu from M&F's visit to Sweden, with particular focus on the close bonds between Frederik and Victoria.
If it's worth watching twice I may write a guide tomorrow.

I can't watch it here in Finland.

Summary of articles in Billed Bladet #22, 2017.
Written by Ulrik Ulriksen & Marianne Singer.

(No scans, my scanner is out of order).

As you know the visit was very much about import and export of products, concepts and know-how.
More than 60 Danish businesses accompanied M&F to Sweden.
Sweden is the second largest export market for Danish products, but that market has dwindled in recent years, so this was very much an attempt to relaunch Danish products.

M&F flew into Stockholm and went aboard Dannebrog who was moored at one of the most prominent places in Stockholm. She served as a base for M&F and it was here they spend the first night, before the ship sailed on to Helsinki, where she served as a base for QMII.
The second night M&F spend at Haga Slott, which is V&D's private home.

Shortly after M&F boarded Dannebrog, V&D arrived, together with Carl-Phillip. This was outside the schedule and must be considered a private gettogether, before the official show began.
At this private meeting Victoria wore a shirt from Baum und Pferdgarten while Mary wore a dress by March 11.

Because V&D and M&F are personal friends the whole program was more relaxed and funny that it might otherwise have been, had they not been so close and the good rapport between the couples shined through and was very much evident in the many little gestures, laughs, eye-contacts and whatever happens when friends are together on the job.

Of course this was after all an official visit, so M&F naturally met King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia, as official representatives for Denmark. And as is proper on such occasions when the whole went to have lunch King Carl Gustav offered Mary his arm, while Frederik followed behind with Queen Silvia as his arm.
Two Danish government ministers accompanied M&F on the trip and they also attended the lunch, they were in return matched by two Swedish ministers, - so everything was proper according to the protocol.

At the gala dinner at Eric Ericssons Hall Victoria wore a dress by Jennifer Blom, a clutch by Bottega Veneta, shoes from Gianvito Rossi and earrings by Caroline Svedbom.
Mary wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress, shoes from Gianvito Rossi and earrings from Dulong Fine Jewelry.

At some point during the busy visit Mary and Victoria strolled through Stockholm to the Danish store, Ole Lynggaard. Here the owners daughter, Ella, presented Mary and Victoria with a bouquet - at the same time.
Victoria's outfit was from Baum und Pferdgarten and shoes from Rizzo. Mary's white and almost see-through outfit was from Max Mara.
Mary also wore a new specially designed brooch by Charlotte Lyngaard. It consists of hand-satinated (whatever that is) leaves in red-gold and small diamond-stutted (I think it's called. Help!) leaved in white-gold.

That covers the trivia of the visit.

In the documentary I linked to above it was mentioned that the two-couples had in fact more or less planned the whole thing themselves. I.e. they approved and co-ordinated the events and oversaw the details. In other words: It was their show, with minimal, if any, interference from QMII and King Carl Gustav.
It was also mentioned in the show by Frederik that they are on the phone with each other regularly.

The documentary didn't cover the actual visit that much, but it was very much a comparison between Frederik and Victoria and the very close bonds between the two of them.
Covering their upbringing and education and how they both have matured in their roles. Perhaps especially Frederik who previously was very uncomfortable in the public glare and very clearly did not relish the role of eventually becoming king. While Victoria has always been more at ease in her role, or natural if you prefer, while being very serious about her future role as queen.
But both faced difficulties in their early youth. Victoria developed anorexia, while Frederik had problems being a "turbo-prince" and his shyness.
However both have very much matured once they found their partners and got married. To the point that Victoria is without a doubt the most popular member of the SRF, perhaps most popular Swede. While Frederik has seen as being fully ready to take over from his mother.

- It was interesting for me to listen to Frederik giving his official speech at his eighteenth birthday. He spoke with a very posh accent back then, while he today speaks with what I will call a normal Copenhagener accent.
You should be able to watch it here: https://www.dr.dk/tv/se/frederik-og...b/-/frederik-og-victoria-et-kongeligt-venskab

It's also obvious to me how beneficial the close relationship between M&F, V&D and Haakon and Mette-Marit and indeed King WA and Queen Maxima is.
The heirs have all had someone to talk to, to confide in, someone who truly understands them. While their spouses must also have benefitted enormously. Daniel and Mette-Marit have in common that they are both to be consorts in a country where they were born and grew up and where they have a past, and where people knew them.
While Mary and Maxima have in common that they both moved to a foreign country, a completely different language, a different culture and a to them almost unknown role.

- I may return to the docu later.

Thanks, LadyFinn. :flowers:

She's a beauty!

I noticed a little detail regarding the flags. There are a lot of strictly observed rules about Dannebrog.
For example Dannebrog must always fly from the highest mast.
If the masts are of the same height Dannebrog must always take the place of honor, on the right flank.
Which the Swedes has most obligingly arranged. - Be that incidental or otherwise. ;) With the Swedish flag being in the center.
