A Swedish Royal Christmas (Traditions, Christmas Cards, Photo Sessions)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Hänt Magazine has contacted Margareta Thorgren and tried to find out how the royal family celebrates Christmas.

When Hänt contacts the court to find out what the royal family does in Christmas, there is no information to get.
- We never make known what the royal family does privately, and Christmas is celebrated privately, says Margareta Thorgren.
Why isn't that information communicated?
- Because they also need a little rest and when it is their private travel and private life, it is not what the court comments on, she says.

How disappointing but totally reasonable. The SRF really have their Media Liaison working pretty well. No information and a quiet rebuke reminding them that Christmas is private time and (very politely) none of their business.

What we do know is that the family will get together at Drottningholm Palace on December 23rd to celebrate the birthday of Queen Silvia with a dinner. The dinner is each year held in a different room of the palace and the room is a secret up until the dinner starts.

a fun tradition! i wonder what they mean in 'each year held in a different room of the palace' - surely it would only be among the dining rooms of the palace, or maybe living rooms? although inventive, bedrooms would hardly make an easy dining location ?

i wonder who picks it and organises it. maybe a member of the family gets to chose each year and the royal chefs/staff get everything ready?

Victoria, Daniel and Oscar received the Christmas trees. Oscar got a little tree to his room. Estelle doesn't have a holiday yet, so she wasn't there.

Prince Oscar's Christmas tree happiness at the castle
Christmas preparations are in full swing for Sweden's royal family, and now this year's fir trees have arrived at the Palace.
Prince Oscar got to choose a very small fir tree with his mother Crown Princess Victoria and dad Prince Daniel.
The royal family's Christmas trees were traditionally handed over at the Royal Palace today.
Crown Princess Victoria wore an ankle-length red skirt with matching soft jacket when she, along with Prince Daniel and Prince Oscar, received this year's trees.
They were handed over according to tradition by students at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, at the Royal Palace.
Prince Oscar was in a good mood and greeted the students with a handshake before he got a very own fir.

King Carl Gustaf was seen at a bookstore on Tuesday.
Suddenly, Carl XVI Gustaf peeked behind the bookshelves in Sickla Köpkvarter in Nacka.
A whole stack of Christmas gift books - what, we do not understandably tell, of course - it was, all with nice paper and names.
Both delighted giggles and raised eyebrows came when the king, in his own high person, appeared outside the Christmas shop in Sickla outside Stockholm at lunchtime on Tuesday.
Satisfied and relaxed, he strolled around Akademibokhandeln and botanized among books on history, cooking, animals and nature and other things.
Maybe the king had also received a 20 percent discount code from Bokus?
Anyway, after a while he went to the checkout with a whole stack of Christmas gift books.
- At least there were six, seven books, says another customer in the store.
Which - and to whom - should of course not be revealed here.
The King - or Santa - can do that on Christmas Eve.
The staff, of course, stood on their toes and helped to wrap all packages of eyebrows.
In the meantime, the king took the opportunity to take another lap in the shop and look a little further on the shelves.
Maybe he saw something he wanted on his own wish list.

On Wednesday, December 18, the Crown Princess, Prince Daniel and Prince Oscar received this year's Christmas trees for the Royal Palace.
Since the 1960s, students from the forestry programme of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) have been handing over a number of Christmas trees to the Royal Palace. "The King's fir" has got its name after this tradition, it was called from the beginning the Nordmann fir.

Oscar is so cute and I love how he got a little tree for himself! He seemed proud as he was carrying it off. ? I presume Estelle was at school and couldn't go with the family.

The Crown Princess Family's Christmas greeting - such a wonderful video also this year! Great to see everyone participating at the story of Jesus' Birth.
The priest asks if they have seen a Nativity Scene before, and Estelle tells that her grandparents (the king and queen) have one.

A church visit ahead of Christmas
Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar visited Katarina Church with the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel ahead of the Christmas holiday.
In Katarina Church, on Södermalm in Stockholm, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar were shown the church’s nativity scene.
During the visit, Rev. Are Norrhava, from Katarina Parish, told them the Bible story about the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem.
The Crown Princess Family was given the opportunity to participate in the staging of the Christmas gospel, with angels singing and the lighting of the star of Bethlehem.
The story of the birth of Jesus is central to the Christian Christmas tradition and the reason people all around the world celebrate Christmas.

A version of the video with the Crown Princely family's Christmas greetings featuring English subtitles have been uploaded to Kungahuset's YouTube page

It's a really cute video. I assume the children already knew the Christmas story. It was fun to watch Daniel participate in playing the 'star' in the video.

The picture that was released seems to show an 'uninterested/unimpressed' Estelle but that didn't seem to be the case based on the video, so that's a pity.

There is something almost magical about the Swedish Royals...their palaces, their traditions, especially their children. Beautiful, enchanting family!?

What a truly wonderful setting at the Katarina Church for the nativity video.

Such a sweet video and it's lovely of the SRF to share it with us to show the children getting involved in Christmas activities, especially those that show the true meaning of Christmas which is often lost in the modern era due to the commercialisation of the season. It was great to see Estelle and Oscar being interested and stuck in with the traditions.

What a great video. Beautiful nativity set up. The kids were both so engaged.

I love how Victoria and Daniel do these videos and we get a real gimpse. :flowers:

As much as Christmas cards are nice, I prefer the videos. You get such a sense of the personality and spirit of the kids that a photo just doesn't give. Plus they are at Christmas and not months ago. Great way to show a bit if the family celebration being intrusive on the kids.

Lovely, loving family and nice video to relate the story of Christmas. I like the young, casual minister interacting with the children

The priest reveals the secrets behind Estelle's film
Victoria's and Daniel's new Christmas movie is absolutely wonderful. The Crown Princess couple took the children to Katarina church where they met reverend Are Norrhava. In an exclusive interview with Svensk Damtidning, he talks about the royal visit.
The Crown Princess family's newly recorded Christmas movie has been giving a lot of joy during the past 24 hours. In the film we see when Victoria and Daniel bring Estelle and Oscar to the Katarina church, at Södermalm in Stockholm, to take a closer look at the nativity scene. And reverend Are Norrhava, 38, tells about the nativity scene.
We call Are who tells a little more about the royal visit.
- It was really fun. Victoria and Daniel are so nice. Open, curious and well prepared. Princess Estelle knew a lot! You noticed that they have talked about these stories at home.
- My focus was on the kids and I wanted to be at eye level with them. We played together and had great fun. The siblings were very involved. Prince Oscar, for example, rang a bell as soon as an angel arrived - and it did quite a few times, he says, laughing.
- They smelled of real myrrh and thought it was fun with all animals.
Many were a little surprised that Victoria and Daniel chose just Katarina church. They usually visit the Royal Chapel or visit Hedvig Eleonora's congregation in Östermalm. But we can tell that the Crown Princess couple actually has a clear connection to that particular church. This is where their friends Ellen and Jan Dinkelspiel got married exactly 10 years ago. Victoria and Daniel were then newly engaged and this week they were back - with two lovely children.

6 funny details from the new royal movie
Have you seen this year's royal Christmas greeting? Otherwise you have to see it! And if you've seen it, there's probably a lot of details you may have missed ...
The annual Christmas greeting from the Crown Princess family does not disappoint! Daniel, Victoria, Estelle and Oscar pay a visit to Katarina church in Stockholm and hear the story of Jesus' birth. Moving and cozy! But have you seen all the details in this wonderful movie? We list them!
- Prince Oscar seems to have inherited one of Mother Victoria's most important qualities! The desire for everyone to feel seen and eagerly want to greet the people they meet. As they step into the church, Oscar extends his hand directly to the priest to greet. So cute!
- We are told that the king and queen put out the nativity scene every Christmas! When the priest asks if the children have seen a Christmas nativity scene before, Princess Estelle responds "we have one with grandma and grandpa" (mormor och morfar). A tradition that has certainly been inherited for many generations back at the Palace.
- The church that the Crown Princess family visits, Katarina church, was completed in 1695. The church, which stands at Södermalm in Stockholm, has actually burned down twice. The first fire took place in 1723 and the second in 1990. Five years after the last fire, the church was reopened.
- Prince Daniel got to act star in the story of how Christmas Eve came about, with a star-shaped sparkler over the nativity scene!
- Estelle took the initiative for the Christmas greeting! At the end of the movie, the whole family stands together in front of the camera to greet Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. After a brief silence, Estelle looks at someone to the right of the camera and proclaims Merry Christmas and shortly thereafter the family agrees!
- Estelle dances out of church! When they leave the Katarina church, the bells ring and as they walk through the avenue, Estelle dances along the gravel corridor, a successful visit in other words!

The swedish Christian newspaper Dagen tells about the Crown Princess family's Christmas video:

The Crown Princess family sends a Christmas greeting from the church
The Christian Gospel was the focus when Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and their children Estelle and Oscar visited the church.
The church bells invite to the church in the video that the court now released for Christmas. There we can watch as the entire Crown Princess family visits Katarina church in Stockholm and together with a priest they go through the Christmas gospel.
"Do not be afraid"
The priest tells of the angel coming to Mary.
- Don't be afraid, Estelle fills in.
- Exactly, because that is what the angels say almost always, answers priest Are Norrhava.
The children can play with the nativity scene and participate in the story in the Christmas gospel.
Prince Oscar tells us that Santa comes with "packages" and Princess Estelle lists the connection Christmas presents have to the story of Jesus' birth.
Jesus as a refugee
The priest also tells us that Jesus got off to a difficult start in life and that the family lived for a time as refugees.
- The nativity scene is about sharing what we have and helping each other, explains the priest.
After Estelle and Oscar get to play with the angels and the wise men, the entire Crown Princess family finally gathers for a Christmas greeting.
- Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, they say jointly before the church bells round off their Christmas greeting.

Sometimes it can feel difficult to catch up with everyone near and dear during Christmas. There will be many trips back and forth so that no one will be forgotten. For that very reason, many people split Christmas and go to either side of the family every two years.
Since both Prince Daniel's and Princess Sofia's parents and siblings live upwards in the country and some distance from Stockholm, the prince family and the crown princess family do also in this way.
Now we have further proof that it will be a Christmas in Ockelbo and Älvdalen this year for the Victoria's family and Carl Philip's family. On Christmas Day, the royal couple will attend a church service in the Royal Chapel at the Drottningholm Palace. Those who lead the service are no less than Michael Bjerkhagen, The Reverend, Court Chaplain and Rector of the Royal Court Parish, as well as Johan Dahlman, The Right Reverend Bishop and Chief Court Chaplain.
When the service is completed, the royal couple invites a few selected to a cozy Christmas lunch at the Palace including Michael Bjerkhagen and Johan Dalman. The lunch is a completely new initiative and may indicate that the rest of the royal family is celebrating Christmas outside Stockholm this year, unlike last year. Then Queen Silvia turned 75 and the whole family, including Princess Madeleine and family, were in Stockholm during Christmas.
But the Christmas holidays are long, and probably the royal couple, the crown princess family and the prince family have booked the days of Twixmas for a cozy Christmas celebration together!

In connection with the gathering of the police to work during Christmas and afternoon pass, the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel also took the opportunity to thank, on behalf of the Royal Family, for the work done by the Police Authority's staff during the all hours of the day and all days of the year.
Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar then invited the police on gingerbread break for the Christmas evening work session.

From yesterdays photos, it seems that Victoria and family gave the police gingerbreads at the Victoria can. It is sold with gingerbread at the Royal Gift Shop:
The pattern of the can: Architect F.W. Scholander was commissioned by King Karl XV in 1865 to redesign the Victoria Hall at the Royal Palace. Scholander designed the pattern for the ceiling in white with gilded latticework and gilded royal crowns. In an old undated drawing, the room is called Segersalen. This is probably why it was renamed the Victoria Hall in 1865, after the Roman victorious goddess Victoria.

SD writes in the article that it is said that already at their first Christmas at Haga Palace, Victoria started a Christmas custom: before Christmas she invites her friends and their children to make Christmas gingerbreads in their big kitchen. You can easily understand how much Estelle and Oscar are waiting for this day.

King Carl Gustaf's traditional Christmas speech will be shown this evening at SVT1 at 19.45.

The King began his speech:
On the day before yesterday, the day before Christmas Eve, I had the joy of gathering my children and grandchildren at Drottningholm to celebrate the Queen's birthday. This is how Christmas begins in our family.
He spoke also about how crime of various kinds creates insecurity in the society. And how the climate continues to change, which introduces us to completely new situations. He spoke also about children and young people and said:
I think of all of you teachers and leaders who help children and young people tofind their place in existence - believing in themselves and their ability. Your efforts are crucial to Sweden's future.
He thanked also everyone who is working during the Christmas holidays.
In the end of his speech he said:
Earlier this year I made a decision to delimit what is called the Royal House. The decision means that it is made clear who within the royal family will act as official representatives of Sweden in the future. For me, this is a way of clarifying what expectations are.
Hopefully it can be helpful when my grandchildren will eventually stand out for their own future. But, to that day, it is far away.
Right now, the Queen and I are looking forward to spending time with our family. We now have seven small grandchildren between one and seven years. It's not always so calm and still but very fun!

The Kings 2019 Christmas Message

Aftonbladet told some days ago that the king was shopping Christmas presents at Akademibokhandeln and left the bookstore with seven books.
The queen has also been on the move and bought Christmas presents. Our eyewittness tells that last Saturday she was seen at the NK department store and just like the king she looked around at the bookstore. There she bought the book Nobel, which was released this fall.
The book is written by the award-winning author and journalist Ingrid Carlberg and has received fantastic reviews. Maybe it was the book that lay under the Christmas tree as a present to the king this year? The queen was also seen buying green cabin baggages designed by Bernadotte & Kylberg as well as two top cases from Horizon!
