A bad translation (sorry):
THE WEDDING OF...HER PARENTS
Intimate and informal
by Patricia Del Gallo.
Jesus Ortiz and Paloma Rocasolano married October 2 of 1971. A ceremony that didn't went to the use: at 10:00 am in the morning and without reprimands. The fiancèe wore "a minifaldero" (a miniskirt) dress and the fiancè, the traditional black suit.
There was no boato or pomp, not either formal flowers nor invitations. Not even the traditional white suit nor the veil for the fiancèe. It is certain that the weddings of then were not like those of now, but was the details that somewhat made a different and special wedding, as assure some close friends of theirs. The one of Jesus Ortiz Alvarez and Paloma Rocasolano Rodriguez, parents of the future Princess of Asturias, Letizia Ortiz and ins-law of the Kings of Spain, were a informal an intimate wedding and, very far of the topics of then and now. Thus that was as they decided to gave the yes on October 2 of 1971.
As rule the tradition the wedding must be celebrated in the city of birth of the fiancèe or, in its defect, where this one resides. Paloma Rocasolano Rodriguez had been born in Madrid, but great part of its family lived by those dates in Oviedo. Enriqueta, its mother, had been born there, but it went away to live very young to Madrid, where it had a daughter, Otilia, with its first husband, who passed away shortly after. Paloma is fruit of its second marriage.
We do not know if it were in the Asturian capital where she knew Jesus Ortiz, "Chus" for his friends, but of course, was the place where they enamored each other, where both decided to contract marriage, to work, to fix its home and its future and to watch the born to its three daughters: Letizia, Erika and Thelma.
For the event they chose the Church of the Christ of the Chains, outside the city. A small building reconstructed in 1947, whose particularitity is that, during years, was the temple selected by hundreds of pairs, many of them attracted by a peculiar legend that, apparently, gave luck to the contrayentes. According to the tradition, two young people who already had fixed their wedding, had to separate days before the wedding date because he had to go to the war. The time passed by without any news over his whereabouts. Suddenly, a day a friar appeared at the fiancee's house and he gave her the chains with which his fiance' was imprisoned. She took them to the Christ and deposited them on his feet, praying for him, although he finally died. In spite of the tragic outcome and of the legend, the certain thing is that the church enjoyed the favoritism of the future pairs. Nevertheless, the present parish priest, Javier Suárez, maintain that another one of the attractives was that "we always gave all type of facilities. Where others put you problems, here the doors were opened".
At first hour of October 2 of 1971 other two more couples contracted nuptials in the Christ of the Chains. But Jesus and Paloma were first: at 10 am in the morning; at the very dawn of a fresh day of autumn in Oviedo. She chose a mini dress of long sleeve and black color - as far as she could of the habitual immaculate white -, crude color socks, shoes with little heel, a small purse and the detail of a rose. The hair slightly gathered backwards and little makeup. He: a black suit, something more traditional, according to some relatives. Paloma was 18 years old then - those who had not reached the 22 years old needed the permission of its father, as she need the permission of her father, the taxi driver Francisco Rocasolano Camacho, to be able to marry. Jesus was 21 years old and at that time he initiated its journalistic race in Asturias.
Few of the relatives of the pair who still are in Asturias conserve clear memories of that day. If they are asked about the future Princess then they have no doubt, "it was a very handsome young girl", "she pointed high since girl" or "I remember the day in which the First Comunión took place". But if we spoke about her parents, the things changes: "How I am going to remember their wedding if I almost don't remember mine", they say. The fact that it was a discreet ceremony, that happened more than 30 years ago and, mainly, that those peoples are the parents of the future queen of Spain has contributed to that few details of the connection extend.
The guests: few and all from the family. Some uncles even assure that they did not go to the wedding for being ill or that they only attended the religious celebration. Apparently, the pair wanted, and they all agree on this, "a symbolic thing" and with the closest friends wich also included the priest. The priest of the Christ, already deceased Oscar de la Rosa, authorized the celebration, although this one was celebrated by an old friend of the pair, the Carmelite Fernando Ezquerro. According to some priests account, Jesus then was bound to the Youth of the Carmelo and he preferred that they were united by somebody of their confidence. Peculiarly, Ezquerro was also the one in charge to later baptize the small Letizia a year later, September 29 of 1972, in the parish of San Francisco de Asis of Oviedo, although we do not know if it attended the First Comunión because, as they say, he left the order later and today it lives outside the region.
On the part of the fiancè their parents were present, Jose Luis Ortiz and Menchu Alvarez del Valle, then already a well-known voice of the Asturian radio, and its sisters Cristina and Henar. On the part of the fiancèe, her mother, Enriqueta Rodriguez; its father, Francisco Rocasolano, and several uncles.
Nobody prevented it. One of the anecdotes of the wedding was the give up of the reprimands or proclamations, that consist of publishing in the church during three weeks the names of the contrayent so that, if somebody knows some impediment, denounces it. Nevertheless, and since apparently did not exist any reason, it was peculiar that they asked for this permission. For it, the pair alleged certain private and personal reasons signed by two witnesses before the ovetense Bishop. According to the present parish priest of the Christ of the Chains, Javier Suárez, "was not habitual. Sometimes some widowers did it or those pairs that, by pregnancy, for example, could not wait for the three weeks of rigor of the proclamations ".
The certain thing is that Jesus and Paloma seems to be in a rush to marry and wanted to do it as soon as possible. On September 27 of 1971, hardly one week before receiving that sacrament, the request file was granted to them. Given the rush there was barely time for great preparations neither the less for reprimands. So the pair finally and without problems said Yes, I want.
And the banquet? between the guests there is no quorum about the place in which the couple entertained them. We can tell that it was celebrated in a place near the church. House Fermín and House Escotet were, at that time, two of the most significant locals of the zone and specialized in this type of events that, if the time allowed it, were celebrated in the outside, on foot and always with abundant cider. The menu consists normally of fried codfish, sausages to the cider, tortilla, empanada, lacón and cooked egg... Typical foods of Asturias.
Today that happy pair has been divorced for years, although they maintain a very good relationships, and have remade its life with other people.
