Popular Princesses
Hello Magazine brings an especial featuring Letizia and Mary
Popular Princesses: Europe's newlyweds win massive approval
Cover
There's no denying that Europe's latest royal newlyweds – Prince Frederik of Denmark and Princess Mary, and Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain – are setting whole new standards in popularity. In fact, more than 115,000 readers recently logged in to hellomagazine.com to vote on which of the two couples is their favourite. The race was a tight one, with Frederik and Mary coming out on top with 60 per cent.
So what stands out about these royal unions? Here, we take a look at how they've captured the public's affection.
DISCREET COURTSHIPS
While both couples led discreet courtships, the pairs' paths couldn't have been more different. Mary, who lived in Australia, was introduced to Frederik by a mutual friend over beer and pizza at a Sydney watering hole, while Letizia met Felipe at an intimate Madrid dinner party. Though both romances were top secret, the Danish royals’ long-distance relationship was three years old – and had already sparked wedding rumours – by the time an engagement was announced. Felipe's hush-hush pairing with Letizia had only been going strong for a few months when the bombshell engagement news astonished Spain.

UNIQUE CHARACTERS
As we get to know them, the new princesses are earning admirers the world over. Mary's warm, down-to-earth nature has made her increasingly popular. At one pre-wedding event, for example, her hat was carried off by the wind, but she didn't miss a beat, laughing gracefully as she thanked the guard who returned it. Letizia's polished and no-nonsense finesse – she is described as "very responsible with a good head on her shoulders" – immediately set her apart from the crowd, especially after she urged Felipe: "Let me finish!" when he interrupted her at an engagement press conference.
DIFFICULT CHOICES
Europe's newest princesses, both professionals in their 30s, made some difficult sacrifices when it came time to choose a royal life. News anchor Letizia, who had embarked on doctorate studies and reported from remote areas of the world, left a award-winning career in TV news. Mary, meanwhile, had also given serious thought to the implications of her decision, not only leaving her career, friends and family in Australia, but also changing her religion.

GRACEFUL TRANSITIONS
Mary kept a low profile prior to her wedding, polishing her image by losing five kilos and taking deportment classes, and learning Danish language, culture and royal customs. When she was formally introduced to the public, she quickly won them over with her charm and grasp of Danish. Letizia's protocol skills were put to the test almost immediately, as she began "royal" duties long before she wed. Her compassion earned her country-wide admiration two months before her wedding, when, visibly affected, she comforted victims of the Madrid terrorist attacks alongside her future husband.
PRINCE CHARMINGS
Fearlessly taking on royal roles, Mary and Letizia also brought out the romantic side of their princes on their respective wedding days. The Danish nuptials were an emotional affair, with Frederik’s eyes filling with tears even before he saw his bride, and the couple sharing a spontaneous kiss just after the ceremony. While Felipe and Letizia were much more subdued – the "balcony kiss" was a coy peck on the cheek – lip readers later examined the broadcast to see what was said privately at the altar. "You're so nervous," whispered Felipe, comforting his trembling bride. "I love you, I love you, gorgeous."

CONTEMPORARY STYLE
When Mary and Letizia joined royal circles, the world didn't just gain two new princesses – it also gained two new fashion icons. From the emblematic white Armani trouser suit she chose for her official engagement, to the stunning red gown she wore to the Danish nuptials, Princess Letizia has defined Spanish flair with the help of national and international designers. And Mary is the undeniable star of the show whenever she appears in public, with her classic-yet-modern style copied from Denmark to Down Under.
OVERWHELMING 'FAN'-FARE
The Danish and Spanish royals have been met with a passionate reception from the public – even signing autographs for legions of "fans" – often making them seem more like rock stars than royals. Mary was heard to exclaim "Wow!" when greeted by a sea of Australian and Danish flags at her first balcony appearance, calling it "a beautiful experience". And the Prince and Princess of Asturias experienced a genuine superstar welcome on their honeymoon tour of Spain, with bodyguards guiding them through a screaming 6,000-strong crowd during one stopover.

PUBLIC AFFECTION
Felipe and Letizia have yet to share a public kiss on the lips, but from the moment Letizia was presented as Felipe's future bride, obvious displays of affection have been replaced by long romantic gazes into each other's eyes, and discreet caresses. Frederik and Mary, whose romance has always been marked by more spontaneous gestures, are quite the opposite, however. The dynamic young couple don't seem to hesitate over showing their love in more public ways, sharing more than one balcony kiss since their wedding.

in the official webpage of the royal house, they don't specify their next engagement. however, they usually have 2 or 3 engagements every week.

I don't think they have anything official this week. They threw a reception for the people who worked on their wedding--staff from Zarzuela, National Patrimony and Royal Guard--on Monday or Tuesday, but that was unofficial.
We'll see the entire Royal Family this weekend at the wedding of the King's nephew to the model Laura Ponte. A party on Friday and the wedding is on Saturday. I'm expecting a stunning and unforgettable bride--she is after all an international model (she started her career by winning a contest with Elite Model agency in NYC) and her style of dress is bold and unique.
But happy birthday today to Princess Letizia.
