The Princes of Asturias will celebrate, tomorrow Sunday, their first wedding anniversary, fifteen days after officially announcing that they are expecting their first child for the next month of November.

It will be, a spokesman of the House of the King informed to Efe, an intimate and familiar celebration, that shall take place when the Prince returns to Madrid from Washington.

The Princes of Asturias got married on May 22nd, in the Madrilenian cathedral of La Almudena, in an historical ceremony and before more than thousand seven hundred guests.

During the toast, at the end of the banquet, the Prince publicly confessed that he was a happy man, because he had married the woman he loved. And on that occasion, the King told them to always think about Spain and to dedicate all their efforts to the Spaniards.

These twelve months have been dedicated to the accomplishment of this; a year in which Doña Letizia, helped by her husband, has learned to be a Princess, during the more than 200 official acts they attended in Spain and abroad; a year that concludes with the happy news that they will become parents in November.

More than 200 official acts (performed by the Princes de Asturias since their honeymoon, at the end of June 2004) have testified their commitment in service to Spain. Work is the word that is more used to summarize the first year of the couple; an anniversary that Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will celebrate next Sunday, when the Prince returns to Madrid, after attending in Washington an academic act in the University of Georgetown.

Miguel Garau, the Barcelonan man, who sent the Princes of Asturias a Lottery ticket as wedding gift, has now sent the couple another ticket with the same numeration, to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Last year, the ticket sent to the Princes by this man would be awarded with more than 26000 €. The buyer of the ticket, Miguel Garau, is member of the Association of Veterans of RTVE, and said in declarations to Europa Press that this time he will also present the royal baby with the series 22500-22510, to which belong the numbers that appear on the wedding date (the 22504).

Garau decided to look for the number 22504 all over Spain: "I wanted that Letizia and the Prince had the awarded tickets and the only solution was to buy from the 22500 until the 22509, including the number of the wedding date”. According to Garau, "I could not imagine that the second prize of the Lottery would correspond to the very same day of the wedding, and that rejoiced me so much that I, who never happened to believe in lottery, had started to have more faith".

If there’s something which characterizes the first wedding anniversary of the Princes it must be indeed their working rate and their activity as much in Spain and abroad. The balance gives the following numbers: six official trips abroad, visits to all the Independent Communities (except Cantabria), inauguration of 4 Cervantes Institutes and 5 great exhibitions, 16 prize-giving ceremonies and scholarships, 7 visits to military units, 51 speeches, etc.

One of the main functions of the Heir to the Throne is the representation of Spain in the swearing-in ceremonies of the Latin American presidents. Ever since they married, the Princes have attended 3 swearing-in ceremonies: Dominican Republic, Panama and Uruguay. For Don Felipe they are now 34 ceremonies that he’s attended in Ibero-America, since 1995. In fact, nobody has attended so many swearing-in ceremonies as he had, and his contacts established throughout this whole decade have made of him a privileged interlocutor with Ibero-America. During those trips, the Heir to the Throne does only attend the ceremony of transmission of power, but he takes advantage of these occasions to meet the incoming and salient presidents, as well as with all the sectors of the society of that country.

As far as the international chapter is concerned, the Princes have also made this last year a series of official trips, but within a new format close to the State visits, and therefore, with contacts on the highest level, including honours of Heads of State. The first trips they made with these characteristics was the one to Hungary (in Europe) and Brazil (in Ibero-America). They also officially visited Mexico and the United States, although these ones within another format. Don Felipe accumulates now 111 official trips abroad, since he made his first trip in 1983, with the objective promoting the image of Spain in all cultural, economic and political aspects. To these countries it is also necessary to add the visits to the Vatican (when the Princes were received by John Paul II, right after their marriage), to Jordan (when they attended the wedding of Prince Hamzah to Princess Noor) and to Austria (where they attended the funeral of president Thomas Klestil).

Besides, as the institutional representatives of Spain they are, the Princes also inaugurated four headquarters of Cervantes Institutes (São Paulo, Budapest, Belgrade and Stockholm). Moreover, in Budapest and Sao Paulo, they also inaugurated enterprise meeting destined to harness the Spainish economic relations with Hungary and Brazil. In fact, economy is one of the lands in which Don Felipe outstands with his presence. He had met businessmen in Brazil, Hungary and Mexico and, within Spain, the Princes had similar encounters in Madrid, Manresa, Reus, Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. In addition to that, they have visited or inaugurated seven centres and factories on the automobile, fishing, chemistry, nourishing, scientific and investigation sectors.

A day in the life of the Princes

At La Zarzuela the sun always rises very early. Within the residence of the Princes of Asturias, the clock marks seven o’clock in the morning and Don Felipe and Doña Letizia start another day.

Press and correspondence

Today is one of those few days of the week when the Princes do not have any official act outside the Palace. But as much in the office of the Heir to the Throne as in the one of his wife, the work is accumulated. There are documents, papers and numerous letters to take care of, as well as a pile of requests and photos asking for a personal dedication.

But before it, the Princes will have breakfast and read the press or, rather, the exhaustive summary of press that is prepared for them, every day, by the Cabinet with all the cuts which are considered to have interest to the couple: any news related to the national and international members of the Royal Family, as well as the more important events of each day.

Sailing by the Internet

Doña Letizia reads everything conscientiously. Later, in her office, she dedicates some time to electronic newspapers and to sail by the Internet, where there are more than a million entrances with her name. On the web, the most rigorous information is mixed with crazy rumours, but it is necessary to read a bit of everything to be informed.

Classes of English

A year after the wedding, Doña Letizia keeps her classes to improve diplomatic English. Her teacher, Michael Howitt, has been thirty years teaching the future Spanish diplomatists. One time per weekly, although always subjected to the official agenda, professor Howitt goes to the Palace of La Zarzuela to give classes to Doña Letizia. And this effort already has given fruits, because the Princess has obtained a good level of English that allows her to express herself with great correction. The rest of her "work as a Princess" she has learned on the field, accompanying the Heir to the Throne.

Writing of the speeches

In the meanwhile, Don Felipe works in his office. The Prince likes to write his own speeches or to introduce modifications in the texts that sometimes are previously prepared by the services of the House of the King. Moreover, he sometimes improvises something on the moment, adding some spontaneous marks to his words. Nevertheless, there is little space for improvisation in his official life, since Don Felipe thoroughly prepared himself, before attending the acts and he likes to be documented on the history of the institutions, the countries or places he visits.

Daily meeting

Today, as usually happens every day, Jaime Alfonsín, secretary of HRH, dispatches with the Princes. This General Attorney has been working next to Don Felipe for almost a decade (since November 1995). Discreet, prudent and amiable, Alfonsín has become the shade of the Prince, since he left the lawyers office of Uría and Menéndez. In this particular meeting there are treated all those subjects that affect the Secretary of the Prince; the speeches are reviewed, as well as the documentation for each event, the pertinent information are asked for, the correspondence is answered and the possible doubts are clarified. When the meeting between the Princes and Alfonsín is finished, there is another meeting to prepare the official acts of the next week. This kind of more sporadic meetings is usually also attended by the General Secretary of the House of the King (Alberto Aza or Ricardo Diaz-Hochleitner, respectively), the head of Protocol (Alfonso Sanz Portolés) and the head of Relations with Media (Juan González-Cebrián). It is also attended by the person in charge of the Security Services.

The Lunch

The end of the meeting agrees with lunch time (it’s already around 2 o’clock in the afternoon) and the Princes will have lunch at home, until half past four in the afternoon, when the office activity is started again. Don Felipe has now some private meetings (that is to say, without media coverage). This way, he receives a great number of people with the purpose of getting information on the national and international reality. The majority of these people are young people of his own generation, who outstand in the economic, cultural or political activity.

At the moment, Doña Letizia does not host meetings alone, but she accompanies the Prince, although, in her own time, she will have her own agenda. In fact, there are already many organizations and institutions asking for the Princess to preside over its acts.

The contacts with representatives of diverse sectors of the society have extended until 9 p.m., almost the hour to have dinner. Outside, it’s sunset.

The great part of the official acts of Princes of Asturias takes place outside the Palace of La Zarzuela. Many are in Madrid, but a very important part takes place in diverse Spanish localities or even in other countries, to which then usually travel by plane of the Spanish Air Force.

In the last twenty months, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia have made more than 60 official trips, 17 to foreigner countries and 44 within Spain. With the purpose of taking advantage of the travels to the maximum, these visits usually are accompanied by very intense agendas, with six or seven acts per day, which allow them to contact all the sectors of the society. In fact, they are exhausting days that begin very early in the morning and usually finish after attending official or institutional dinners. In these trips, the Princes usually travel accompanied by the General Secretary of the House by the King, the head of the Secretary of the Prince, the head of Protocol, the head of Press, the aide of Don Felipe and the members of the Security Services, who take trained dogs as well, to detect explosives. Sometimes, the trip of the Princes agrees with some act of the Kings that requires the presence of these people and, in those occasions, they are replaced by other employees of their departments. At the moment, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia also travel with a doctor. In addition to that, and following the same simple system of the Queen, Doña Letizia is also accompanied by one lady, who takes care of the always impeccable image of the Princess, namely her hairdo and the ironing of the suits.

Don Felipe practices squash and Doña Letizia the Pilates method

In what private the life of the Princes is concerned, there is also place for long strolls and sport, which they sometimes practice together, like swimming, tennis, bicycle riding or ski (in the Winter). But there are other sports that each of them exercises by themselves: thus, Don Felipe is a great enthusiastic practitioner of squash and sailing, while Doña Letizia prefers the Pilates method of physical preparation. This method, which she practices with Queen Sofia, gathers the western philosophy of dynamic and muscular exercise, with the Eastern one, that exercises body control, being based on breathing and relaxation. The Pilates Method is perfectly compatible with the pregnancy of the Princess, since it consists of slight exercises that help to fortify and to strengthen muscles by means of smooth stretching and, in any case, it’s always possible to adapted it to each stage of gestation.

But the Princes also dedicate great part of their time to book reading, which they study and analyze. Both share a great interest by works on International Relations and, whereas Don Felipe is passionate for scientific and technological innovations, as well as economy, Doña Letizia prefers History.
