"Friendship between King Juan Carlos and King Fahd marked the relation between both monarchies"
The personal friendship between King Juan Carlos and King Fahd marked the relation between the monarchies of Spain and Saudi Arabia, and the strong affection bonds created by both monarchs were reflected in the many meetings that they had along with their families in Marbella, Madrid and Ryadh.
Therefore, King Juan Carlos received with "great sorrow" the news of King Fadh's death. They last met in a private meeting in October 2002 at Nahda Palace (Arabian word for "dew") , one of the estates owned by the Saudi Arabian king in the Costa del Sol.
Besides having meetings with King Fahd in Marbella, where he used to go by helicopter from his summer residence in Palma de Mallorca, King Juan Carlos, accompanied by Queen Sofia, travelled to Saudi Arabia in several occasions, being the first one a State Visit in 1977.
Two years later, in 1979, King Fahd presented King Juan Carlos the yacht Fortuna as a gift, a boat that was handed over to the Spanish Cultural Heritage in 1981. King Juan Carlos, as Head of State, used the yacht for ten more years, making a great show of a hobby that he shared with the Saudi monarch.
Prince Felipe made a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia in year 1999, in which he delivered a letter written by King Juan Carlos in which the Spanish king prayed for the further strengthening of both families, governments and peoples' ties.
On the other hand, the then prince Abdala Bin Abdelaziz traveled to Spain in 1997.
Prince Salaman, brother of the now defuncted King and governor of Ryadh, visited Madrid in 2002 and represented the Saudi Royal Family at the wedding between Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia.
