Before I ask this.... I found it on the internet so do not know anything else about it but, there are rumours that Sofia has an affair with the journalist Inaki Gabilondo. Does anybody know anything about it? I looked around on the net but didn't find anything... Thanks ;)

One can't believe in anything that can be found around the web, Sofia... that is another nonsensical rumour ;)

Sri Lanka Red Cross wins Spanish award

[TamilNet, May 13, 2005 10:54 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) was awarded the prestigious Spanish Red Cross Society Gold medal for 2005 in recognition of its outstanding work towards the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Mr. Jagath Abeyasinghe, President of SLRCS received the award on behalf of thousands of SLRCS volunteers at the ceremony chaired by Her Majestic Queen Sofia of Spain in Madrid on the 10th of May, SLRCS sources said.

"We have not yet recovered from the shock caused by the enormous tragedy of the tsunami in the Southeast Asian countries, which led to the biggest relief operation in the history of our organization, and which will result in a prolonged recovery phase. The Red Cross and Red Crescent reiterates today its conviction that defeating poverty, and therefore its allies disease, illiteracy, and violence, is not impossible at all." President of Spanish Red Cross Society Mr. Juan Manuel Suarez del Toro in his address at the event said.

"I accept this award on behalf of the thousands of our dedicated volunteers spread out in every single district of our island. This award makes us reflect on our humanitarian mission to some of the most vulnerable in our society, whilst re-dedicating ourselves to the tremendous challenges ahead," Mr. Abeyasinghe emphasized. "I thank the Spanish Red Cross Society for this honour bestowed on our national society, the gracious hospitality and your confirmed desire and support to ensure that the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society will be able to achieve its objective of being a fully developed and well functioning national society which can be a beacon of light to the other National Societies," Mr.Abeyasinghe said in conclusion.

juan carlos, a constitutional monarch

the dutch newspaper nrc has a small article about juan carlos, it seems that the spanish bishops have written him a letter with the request to do a similar thing as king boudewijn of belgium, who temporarily abdicated so as not to have to sign the belgian law of abortion in 1990. The spanish bishops asked juan carlos to do the same in order not to have to sign the law on gay marriages.
The spanish socialist government said he would not and Juan Carlos has confirmed that he will not too.

King Juan Carlos attends this Monday the awards ceremony of the Laureus prizes of Sport that is taking place in Estoril (Portugal). The King also participates in a series of private activities that are organized around the awards, in this Portuguese city where the Spanish monarch lived part of his childhood and youth.

From EFE:

Queen Sofia attended yesterday in Moscow the golden wedding celebrations of the famous Russian musicians Mstislav Rostropóvich and Galina Vishnevskaya. Doña Sofia and Bernadette Chirac (wife of the president of France), attended a concert performed by the couple in the Centre of Opera directed by Vishnevskaya, where some classic pieces, as well as Soviet and Russian folksongs were interpreted.

After the spectacle, the couple and friends celebrated the anniversary at the mythical Metropol Hotel of Moscow, where the musicians met for the first time, back in 1955.

In addition to Doña Sofia (who has a personal friendship with the Russian musicians), the dinner was also attended by Queen Beatriz of Holland, the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg and other guests of honour.

Besides, Juan Carlos also went to the Autódromo do Estoril, where the Spanish monarch took the accompany seat of a speed car. I saw him on TV and he looked very funny in that suit used by racers. At the end of a lap on the circuit, the king confessed that, more than the speed, he felt uncomfortable about the brakings in the limit of sharp bends.
The Laureus World Sports Awards’ ceremony took place at 8 p.m., in Casino Estoril, and it was attended by King Juan Carlos, along with Infanta Elena, Jaime de Marichalar, Iñaki Urdangarin and Infanta Pilar.
