If you are referring to the daughters of the King and Queen, rather than the King's sisters, there are seperate threads on them, Infanta Elena and Family and Infanta Cristina and Family respectively. Please refer to those threads for more news, pictures and information.

Have always wondered about the title "infanta." Is that like "Princess" in England or like "Lalla" in Morocco? Isn't Princesa the Spanish word for Princess, and if so, why is this not used? Thanks in advance... =D

Infanta is equiuvalent to Princess in other countries, just as if the King and Queen had had another son after Felipe, he would be known as Infante so and so.

I am not sure about your other questions.

I think they're called Infanta/Infante because they're "Children of Spain"
the heir to the throne is a special case.

that's right!

it's curious that they don't use the word 'princesa' and 'principe'... maybe it has to be with some kind of tradition or something like that.

Fireweaver was right on the answer.

Infanta is used for the children of the king I think.

But then why are the present King's sisters also titled Infantas Pilar and Margarita? To my knowledge, their father was not King of Spain, though he should've been.

When I looked up in a Spanish dictionary, it was stated there that a person is called

Infante when he is the son of a Spanish or Portugese king
Infanta when she is the daughter of a Spanish or Portugese king.

In the case of King Juan Carlos' sisters, they are called still Infantas because their father would have been a king and generally, Infante or Infanta refers to a child. Even though their father was not able to succeed as king but he was still a spanish royal.

Infanta Pilar in Portugal for "El rastrillo"

Hi:

Yesterday she went to Lisbon to open the 1st "el rastrillo" in Portugal with the wife of Republican president, Maria José Ritta and Maria Barroso. And she spoke in Portuguese with the people in the rastrillo. Here you have the article:

The Infanta attended the first beneficial rake that is celebrated in earth lusas. / EFE

The Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón inaugurated yesterday, next to the wife of president Jorge Sampaio, Maria Jose Ritta, the first edition of the beneficial fair of El rastrillo in portuguese land, organized by the shared in common association THE NEW FUTURE. Infanta Pilar & Luis Gomez-Acebo, Dukes of Badajoz

Does anyone have pictures of their wedding? I'm in need of them for a project I'm working on.

Thanks in advance!:D

Anna

Anna, this is the only one I have found so far. Hope it helps.

Thank you Marezdote and Sylvia!:D

These will help a lot!;)

It should be really interesting to actualise this thread about the king's sisters. I mean explaining about their sons weddings, specially those referring to Pilar, and their affairs, as well as their professional lives... just to give a different perspective of the family of the king of spain and how normal they are. I would do that if I had any photos but I don't. Nevertheless, I'll try to give some info

I wonder why their biographies are not available on the King's Houshould webpage even though they belong to the Spanish Royal Family.

It's because they belong to the Royal Family, but not to the Royal House. I believe that the same will happen with Elena and Cristina when Felipe is king.

the tournaments will take place in HK instead of Beijing, China because in Beijing they don't have the experience and they have sanitary problems in mainland china that makes it difficult for the horses or sth....

here's an article from yahoo

Beijing 2008 Olympic events to be held in Hong Kong for well-being of horses

Equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be held in Hong Kong based on the "best interests of the competition and the well-being of the horses," the International Olympic Committee announced Friday.

The agreement finalizes Beijing's push to have the equestrian competition moved from the Chinese capital.

"We are confident there will be a wonderful Olympic equestrian competition in Hong Kong," said IOC Coordination Commission chairman Hein Verbruggen, who announced the switch during IOC meetings in Singapore.

"The agreement means the locations for all Beijing 2008 competitions have now been finalized, allowing progress in all areas of Games preparation."

The international equestrian federation had originally objected to the move, but accepted the decision after the Beijing organizing committee, BOCOG, made guarantees regarding the venue.

FEI president Infanta Dona Pilar said BOCOG had assured the federation of the best conditions for riders and horses in Hong Kong.

"This has always been our main objective. We are confident that BOCOG and Hong Kong will ensure the stage is set for excellent equestrian competition in Hong Kong."

The Chinese organizers have lobbied hard for the switch, saying 17 equine diseases are prevalent in Beijing and other mainland Chinese cities.

BOCOG executive vice president Wang Wei said he was delighted the best possible solution had been reached.

"We are convinced that the Hong Kong venue will enhance the quality and the excitement of the Games in 2008. BOCOG will work to ensure the athletes, officials, media and spectators in Hong Kong know that they are an integral part of the Beijing Games. When Melbourne hosted the 1956 Olympics, equestrian events were held in Sweden because of strict quarantine restrictions in Australia.

Although some years ago a judge forced Doña Pilar de Borbón to demolish her Mallorcan house, the sister of the King continues spending the summer in the island, along with some of her children and grandchildren. Yesterday, with his son Bruno and her daughter-in-law Bárbara, she watched the sailboats that are competing in the regatta Count of Barcelona, which is celebrated every year, in honour and memory of Don Juan de Borbón.

Doña Pilar, who turned 69 years old, last July 30th, used to spend the summer in a Mallorcan small house in Palma, located in front of Porto Pi, just a few meters far from Marivent. But one day, the proprietor of the house located behind Doña Pilar’s appealed for a city-planning demand, alleging that the eldest sister of the King had raised the house a few meters, preventing his views over the sea. Doña Pilar did not contest, so that nobody thought that she was receiving a favoured treatment, in case of winning the cause, and decided to demolish not only a part, but the whole house. The peculiar thing of this story is that the very same neighbour, who appealed the judiciary demand, bought that land and constructed there a new building, which is far taller than the primitive house. And there it is the new building, located in a privileged zone, without anybody wondering what interest had motivated the demolition order that Doña Pilar so promptly accepted.

Since then, the sister of the King (after a couple of summers absent from Mallorca, to assimilate the whole issue) spends the summer in a calm, retired urbanization of Palma. She lives an independent life from the one of his illustrious relatives and usually does not meet them on board of the Fortuna, like other royal relatives do. In that attitude, she resembles her father very much, since Don Juan used to arrive almost all the summers in Palma, and preferred to remain on board of his sailboat, the Giralda, anchored in the Clube de Mar, instead of settling down in Marivent. Then in the evening, the Count of Barcelona used to receive his friends, and repeated the ritual of dry martini, which he enjoyed even when the disease prevented him to drink. The Giralda, (which the royal family donated to the Navy, after the death of Don Juan) is one of those old sailboats, which resist the attacks and storms, just like some people with a more difficult life than what it apparently seems.
