Jon Bloch Skipper replies:
The Prince Consort every year take part in a number of hunts, among them the traditional royal hunts.
Compared to the lavish royal hunts of earlier times the DRF only shoot (*) very few animals nowadays.
Apart from that the DRF are not gorging themselves in state-funded game. The animals shot (*) during a royal hunt are state property. It happens that the court buy a part of the prey for use in the royal kitchens, but the state sell the remaining game to shops specialising in selling meat from game, all over the country.
Finally it's the responsibility of the royal master of the hunt (**) that the royal hunts do not affect the existing populations of game, a job for which he has the full backing of the Prince Consort: "Many idealists, who wish to ban any form for hunting, forget that the consequense would be overpopulation and degeneration. A true hunter respects animals, selects his game and take into account the age, sex, scarcity and size. It's only a few who is out to kill, just for the kill". (***)
You can read more about the Prince Consorts attitude to hunting in his autobiographt "Destiny oblige", from 1996.
(*) The word used is actually "nedlægge", which is a much more neutral word for killing game. I don't know an equivalent English expression.
(**) At other hunts, the master of hunt is either the local game warden (skovfoged or skovrider) or the one who owns the hunt, who is responsibly for what is shot and how much. - And also security.
(***) The car is the biggest and most lethal predator in DK.

Thanks for this Muhler! The 'soft' word for killing game you are looking for is 'cull', a term used to designate animals shot to meet a quota or limit set by a licencing authority. Now, I am intrigued by the previous post in this thread that also has to do with the Prince Consort and food and you are the man to help me out here. The Prince Consort has produced a cookbook I understand. Have you tried any of his recipes? Could you share some experiences, or maybe even a Prince Consort recipe? (unfortunately no Cahors wine glass smileys!)

Thanks, Gerry.
I'll keep cull in mind.
You mean share a recipy of my own? Look below.
No, I'm afraid I haven't tried any of PH's recipies. I use my own or just cook away.
In fact the only two cooking series I watch are with Nigella Lawson... and a show called "Nak og æd = whack and eat".
He has in fact written several cookbooks. How big a succes they are, I don't know.
I think they and his poems are mostly used as what-are-we-going-to-give-aunt-Agnes-for-Christmas.

Thank you Muhler. Here is another question about HM Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik, why are the Crown Prince couple representing them in New York at the 100th anniversary of the American Scandinavian association? This is a 'a very big deal' with all the other Nordic Kings and Queens present but no Danish queen and consort? This is very odd, I think.

 It's not odd at all.
Frederik and Mary are undertaking an official trip to the US so it makes sense that they should attend in representation of HM the Queen.
And it's not an occasion that necessarily requires the attendance of a Scandinavian monarch, it just so happens that they were invited to attend.
Harald and Sonja are touring throughout the US at this time and Carl Gustav and Silvia are able to make the trip.

Madame Royale nailed it
I agree, it's simply practical that M&F take that one.
- Combined with my pet theory about M&F quietly taking over.

Frederik and Mary are a good choice in this regard. They are already very popular also good ambassadors.

This hunt outfit of Henrik's was quite tame - I can live with the beige turtleneck sweater after some of the other monstrosities he has worn to previous hunts.
In other news, Henrik was present at the funeral ceremony of Crown Prince Sultan of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh last week (October 26th).

True, he has character that I welcome.
He's game.
I love the image of Prince Henrik running naked with his gun through the wild woods. All the time his gold chain displayed on his bare hairy chest.
Watch out deer!
I agree with the useful cull of wild game animals:
- I agree with using and not wasting the meat.
- I agree with keeping the animal numbers at a level that is optimum for their own health and survival. And for the survival of their natural habitat.
- I agree that the 'kill' should be an organised hunt with rules, codes of behaviour and traditional respect for the animals and for safety.
Otherwise we shall see overpopulated animals dieing in terrible conditions and uncontrolled 'hunters' running amok shooting for all the wrong reasons.
The wild deer is luckier than farmed animals. For most of it's life it has a freedom and a far longer life span on average than, say, sheep, chickens and cattle farmed for food - (which I enjoy).

Thank you very much for putting that image into my head!
Now, I'll have nightmares for the next few months.
I hardly slept for an entire week, the last time he mooned.

This week Billed Bladet has a feature on a recent royal shoot in the woods near Fredensborg Palace. The party was a mix of the royals and the rich. Anyway ...there's a photo of Prince Henrik which could give you a bad dream .. even with his clothes on .......
