Thanks, Muhler. Wonder why she was instructed not to ring the bell twice and what the significance of that is?

Because if she rang twice she would have to buy drinks to all present.

Many, if not most, DK bars have a bell. And if someone ring the bell, he/she's buying a round of drinks for all present. - That can be pretty expensive!
- So ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for your wallet. :ermm:

Aha! I wondered if it had something to do with where she was, etc. Thanks!

Thanks for all of the cultural information that you give out. It really helps to give me context when I am reading the articles about the family. :flowers:

You are most welcome, Jemagre :)

Summary of article in Billed Bladet #13, 2011.
Glædeligt gensyn - Joyful reunion.
Written by Henrik Salling. (*)

Our Marie inaugurated in new route from Billund Airport to Paris recently, run by Air France. A route belle Marie has already declared she intends to use.
After having cut a ribbon, very appropriatly, in the colors of the Tricolour, she said: "It'll become a little easier for me to visit my French family, when there is now a direct route between Billund and Paris. And it'll be easier for them to come up here. And then it's important to get Billund on the map as a town you can also get to from abroad". (**)

By the our reporter caught up with her and Princess Marie confided to us: "My son became so happy when he saw me after the trip to Greenland.
He recieved med with open arms and lots of laughter and hugs".

(*) Well, well, well. Jutland is usually Ken Richter's domain, but Henrik Salling, (who appear to have developed a very good rapport with la Marie) covered this instead.

(**) So far Billund has mainly handled flights to holiday destinations, discount routes and shorter routes. The locals would really, really like the airport to expand.

Thank you, Iceflower :flowers:

That's interesting and positive news.
I somehow had a feeling la Marie would join the Total Defence in some way.
So she has joined what was previously better known as the Civil Defence.
That's in line with Mary joing the Home Guard, which is also a part of the Total Defence and Joachim and Frederik who both hold military ranks. (The military also being a part of the Total Defence). Joachim in the reserves, Frederik as a future commander in chief.

I'll deal more with this later, gotta pick up our youngest first.

Princess Marie has recently taken part in a training for emergency services
which included first aid, fire fighting and rescue in Tinglev.

** Prinsessen uddanner sig: Marie vil redde liv ** translation **

** jv.dk: Royal uddannelse i Tinglev: Prinsesse Marie yder førstehjælp **

Translation of article on the webpage of Beredskabsstyrelsen = Civil Defence. (*) Beredskabsstyrelsen - Prinsesse Marie frivillig i redningsberedskabet (There are pics, click 'em).

Prinsesse Marie volunteer in the Civil Defence.

Her Royal Highness Princess Marie are currently going through a series of courses in the Civil Defence, which among other things encompass First aide, fire fighting and rescue.

Her Royal Highness Princess Marie is currently going through an introduction training in the Civil Defence at it's school in Tinglev.
Princess Marie has expressed interest in the tasks of the Civil Defence in preventing, limiting and dealing with damage and accidents involving persons, property and the environment in connection with accidents or disasters. Based on that the Princess has accepted the offer from the Civil Defence of taking part in an introduction training (**) with employees from the Civil Defence.
On completion of her training, Princess Marie will be attached to the Volunteer Deployment Force (DFI) under Civil Defence Central Jutland in Herning. (***)
"It's a great delight for the Civil Defence that Princess Marie wish to be attached as a volunteer as a part of the emergency readiness", says vice manager in the Civil Defence Fleming Klokager.
"Princess Marie's dedication will be a part of creating positive attention about the Civil Defence and the important job of securing the robustness of the Danish society, which the Civil Defence - and not least the volunteers - contribute to", says the vice manager.

Facts about the training.

The training encompass among other things traditional Civil Defence disciplines as administering first aide, putting out fires, rescuing injured persons and persons who are trapped and communication and staff work.

(*) To keep things simple I'll translate the name Beredskabsstyrelsen with Civil Defence, which was it's old name.

(**) Basic traning which all new "recruits" in the Civil Defence go through.

(***) What beforehand used to be called a "column". A column was and is equivalent to a company, or in this case a brigade, in the armed forces.

I think that's very commendable by our Marie.

Now, The Civil Defence belongs to the Ministry of Interior and is a part of the Danish Total Defence.
The personel in the Civil Defence consists of conscripts, volunteers and employees.
Equipped with heavy specialist machinery, especially pumps, the Civil Defence is called out in case of floods, heavy rainfall, search for missing persons, disasters, ecological accidents like oilspils, major accidents, brush and forest fires, terrorist attacks and war.
Eventhough they are uniformed, they are considered a civillian organisation. (During the cold war they were supposed to be issued batons, to defend themselves and to keep some order).
The Civil Defence are fairly often called out, not least after the heavy rainfalls in recent years, but volunteers on a basic level, like la Marie are not called upon very often.
Marie will in my opinion mainly be a patron/figure head/living recruitment poster for the Civil Defence.

The Total Defence consists of the police, firebrigades under provincial district control, the Civil Defence, hospitals, the regular armed forces i.e. army, navy and airforce and the Home Guard.
These different services work together depending on what kind of emergency there is.
The police belongs to the Ministry of Justice and they have their usual day to day jobs, often reinforced by the Police Home Guard, who act as a kind of deputies in various situations. Including royal visits during the summer cruises with Dannebrog.
The Home Guard belongs to the Ministry of Defence like the regulars. It used to be a territorial defence, lightly armed and supposed to observe and harrass an invading force locally.
The Home Guard has now developed into a kind of territorial army or national guard, which is now also deployed abroad in direct support of the regular army.
The Home Guard now consists of a little less than 1% of the population, or the equivalent of 200.000 Australians, 3.000.000 Americans or 550.000 Britons. During the cold war that number was higher.

I don't how many are members of the Civil Defence, but I'll estimate the number to be around 25.000, including concripts.

The Civil Defence and the Home Guard, which Mary belongs to, have taken over a number of roles from the military here at home in DK, simply because you are hard pressed in even finding a soldier at home in DK these years! (I'm only half joking). Beforehand there were barracks all over the country, and when needed you could quickly mobillize a lot of hands and showels. No longer.
The military is roughly speaking divided into: those serving abroad, those who have recently served abroad, those who are preparing to serve abroad, specialists and concripts (who are practically all volunteers and whom the military aim to recruit for service as professionals and thus serving abroad).

Brief summary of article in Billed Bladet #14, 2011.
Marie yder førstehjælp - Marie applies first aide.
Written by John Lautrup and the less than gentlemanly Henrik salling.

It's basically a follow-up on what we already know by now. Our Marie wished to become a member of Beredskabsstyrelsen = Civil Defence and is currently going through the basic training, which very much includes first aide.
Mary has also gone through a basic first aide course, when she became a member of the Army Home Guard, the difference is that Mary's course would have included some elements of dealing with war traumas and chemical warfare.
If the basic course in Civil Defence still is roughly as it was some twenty years ago, it will include la Marie being buried in a tunnel of rubble and then having to dig herself out again. In complete darkness of course.
The fair Marie said: "I've always been interested in the work of Beredskabsstyrelsen (the Civil Defence). I'm very impressed with the great job do within their field. Now, I have learned to know them and I haven't been less impressed. But I have after all just started".

hats off to Marie...she just keeps on getting better & better and is a credit to her husband and new country. She started off very slow--and learned her lessons one step at a time.

Princess Marie is doing a fantastic job of stepping up her appearances since Mary is on maternity leave. I have a feeling she is going to be one of my favorites to watch for years to come.

There are some really great pictures, Its nice to see her taking some short solo events abroad also great seeing her quite a bit at events.

Thanks for the pics, Iceflower, Marika & Little Sunshine :flowers:

The conference is held every two years and one of the goals of the members is to get more women into the boards and leading positions in the business world.

Which I think is a sensible thing, as long as women get the position based on merit and not a quota.
Anyway, I'll be a non-issue within the next fifteen years or so, as relatively more women than men, get a higher education here in DK.
Personally I believe that in two generations from now, the table will be turned. People will discuss admitting more men into leading positions of the society.

Anyway, the newsreader and reporter pronounced our Marie's name in Danish = Maree-eh.

And she had no problems whatsoever in understanding the question from the reporter in the end and her reply was clear without hesitation. Her accent did not disturb her message.
Q: What did she think of the topic of this conference?
Marie: "I think it's exciting to hear about, men, women and the way they think. I think they are prepared for a really good debate". (The translation is litteral, hence the choice of words).

I agree. Marie is a great asset to the Danish Royal Family.

 Love the expression on Marie's face.

Thanks for the pics, Iceflower :flowers:
They are hillarious.

The lady seems like she would wish she was somewhere else.
The man is mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, he seems to have no problems munching down the bugs.
Well, I guess he's eaten so many camels (an expression) that a grasshopper in no big deal....:whistling:

Well, it's Thursday again and another issue of Billed Bladet has hit the streets.
Despite a massive coverage of the BRF wedding (*) the DRF is nevertheless well featured.

In this week we have a note about Frederik in Greenland.
Our Marie presenting a prize for autism association.
Prince Henrik in the Opera and commenting on the coverage of the wedding.
A very interesting article about Christian and his new school.
A Q&A about a bunker designated for members of the DRF.
The Regent Couple moving in at Fredensborg for the summer.
President Putin meeting QMII.
Some info on the golden ballarinas Bella wore at the christening. - All their outfits are incidentally put on display at Amalienborg Museum.
Joachim will be well featured in a TV-docu about racing (cars) to be aired in the autumn.

(*) Pippa Middleton is pretty hot! - What? I'm a male, I'm genetically allowed to drool. :p

And then we have this:

Translation of article in Billed Bladet #18, 2011.
Marie spiser græshopper - Marie eats grasshoppers.
Written by Annelise Weimann.

"What's that? Grasshoppers? Can you eat those"? A puzzled Princess Marie asked when she attended the opening of the Day of Research at townhall square in Copenhagen. So far everything had been quiet and peaceful with handing over awards inside the townhall and funny speaches by young ph.d students. Only when Marie together with the mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, and Minister of Science, Charlotte Sahl-Madsen went outside to the square did the Princess find out what was expected of her.
Marie stood for a long time and looked at the small fried animals and (she) wasn't that keen on tasting. But when both the major and the science minister ate the crunchy insects Marie wanted to try as well and afterwards she claimed: "Yum, they taste good". (*) Marie did however quickly ask for a glass of juice to wash down with and future guests at Schackenborg probably don't have to fear being served grasshoppers at the dinnertable, judging from the expression on Marie's face.
The Princess experienced many new things and she was crazy about the music played by the band William Blake. (**) Marie applauded enthusiatically, smiled and rocked her foot, ready to dance, but no one asked her to dance and instead she returned back to Amalienborg soon after. Here lunch was waiting and it constisted with guarantee not of crunchy roasted grasshoppers.

(*) You're a lousy hypocrite, Marie. - And that's not the worst thing to say about someone.

(**) Don't know them. ADDED: I do now. Listened shortly to a couple of tracks on youtube. - No. Rebecca Black's Friday is much much better.

A wonderful story. :ROFLMAO:
Here are translations of some of the captions, you can add them to the gallery Iceflower has kindly posted.

- Marie looked somewhat hesitantly at the pan with the fried grasshoppers.

- Marie did however end up wanting to taste and (she) picked the smallest possible grasshopper, she could find.

- Two-three times did Marie chew, before she quickly and with closed eyes swallowed the long insect.

- - "Can I have for a glass of juice, please"? Asked Marie and hurried to get the taste of grasshopper out of her mouth.

Princess Marie visiting Beredskabsstyrelsen Midtjylland (DEMA Danish Emergency Management Agency). September 03, 2011

our marie looks pretty chic in her civil defence dress uniform, eh?
Hmm, she does looks chic, but why didn´t she wore the skirt instead of trousers? :ermm:

don't see any other skirts around. are they even using skirts with their dress uniform in the civil defence anymore?

i'm more interested in the fact that none of the representatives of the civil defence are wearing headgear.
now, some of you have an encyclopedic knowledge about dresses, i know a little bit about uniforms, admittedly not much about the civil defence.
my guess is that they don't because they belong to a civillian organisation, under the ministry of the interior in fact.
- in contrast to the military, like our marie's adjutant, who would never dream of being outside without a headgear or "etaterne" = the uniformed civillian services of the state, i.e.police, post, state railroads, costums and so on, who ought never show themselves outside without a headgear.
anyone in the know about civil defence headgear?

added: did some research. members of the civil defence do not wear headgear when outside. period! - except in connection with service, where protective headgear is required, like helmets, protection against weather or against dirt and so on.

Oh, if you think this is nerded, wait until tomorrow for the official flagdag....:p
added: on the flagday tomorrow members of the total defence, which includes the military as well as civil defence, are honored. we may therefore see both marie and her joachim in uniforms.

Is Marie part of the emergency meaning patron or anything like that, taken some courses or did she just turn up in uniform because she was visiting them?

Our Marie is a fully qualified member of beredskabsstyrelsen, which to keep it simple i refer to as the civil defence.
she earned her right to wear the uniform the hard way and she is officially registered as an active serving member of the "column" based in herning, central jutland.
you can read about here in english: DEMA - Welcome to the Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA)

She graduated 23. june Beredskabsstyrelsen - Prinsesse Marie tilknyttet redningsberedskabet

in reality we will most likely see marie as a sort of patron or living recruitment poster for beredskabsstyrelsen/civil defence.

Oh, that could very well be the case here :flowers: But didn´t CPss mary wear a skirt when she was in uniform?:ermm:

that's a definite no.
mary's service uniform doubled (unfortunately) as her dress uniform.
