Yes, I think Lars Hovbakke nailed it pretty well.
It will appeal to those who believe that royalty should be somewhat exclusive. Anyway, in contrast to Frederik Joachim has never been "folksy". That's not his strength and being the secondary prince he can also allow himself the luxury of sending his children to elite schools.
M&F have four children, Christian might go to a ordinary high school, to maintain the connection with the people he is eventually going to rule.
While Bella may opt for for a school focusing just as much on music and performance, while say Josephine (whom I suspect to be the brainy one in the family, just a gut feeling) could attend an elite school.
Vincent may attend an academy focusing on sports.
- That should satisfy most, because someone will always complain! And they will always believe it would be the end of the monarchy.
I bet when the first DK king send his first son to study abroad back in medieval times, somewhat would grump and believe it would be the end of the monarchy...
But they are still here.
- It's basically the extension of the Tall Poppy Syndrome/Jante's Law V. 2.0: "Nothing shall ever change and nothing shall ever be attempted for the first time".

And let´s add to that that he started a year earlier in school than other at his age. So it´s a good idea to take 10th grade and become a year older before starting in gymnasiet

Unless it is Christian's own wish to attend an elitist boarding school such as Herlufsholm or Sorø Akademi, I doubt Frederik and Mary will actively encourage it. That said, despite the fact that Tranegårdsskolen is a public school, the majority of the children attending the school are children from the upper class – it's not a completely ordinary school, and I wouldn't be surprised should some of his class mates choose to attend high school at one of the aforementioned boarding schools, so Christian might do as well.
I think it's more likely for Christian to take a year at a foreign boarding school (but then again, I thought that about Nikolai as well). Perhaps in Australia or the UK. Both QMII and Frederik have attended boarding schools overseas. QMII attended the North Foreland Lodge in Hampshire, England, and Frederik (and Joachim) attended École des Roches in Normandy, France, so I definitely think that a foreign boarding school for Christian is the most likely. I also reckon he will attend university abroad.

I have always had a sneaking suspicion that they might enrol him and Athena in the local school in Møgeltønder – don't know if it will end up happening, but I sure would love if it did.

Absolutely. We can be almost completely sure that most if not all of M&F's children will study in Australia in one way or another.
We don't know what course the younger children will set, but Christian's is very predictable: High school, then the military, finishing as first lieutenant. Then he'll either go a year abroad somewhere before going to the university, or go straight to the university, which will very likely also mean some time aboard, studying.
Then back for a more thorough military career, combined with more study.
Bella, Josephine and Vincent can better go where their skills and interest lead them.
I also think it will be more than likely that bette Henrik and or Athena will study in France or Switzerland at some point. Perhaps also going to New York like their mother?

I can assure you, Tiggersk8, you are not the only one who has gone ga-ga over Felix blue eyes.
Summary of article in Billed Bladet #33, 2014.
Written by Trine Larsen.
While Martin Jørgensen took Felix to school in Copenhagen, Joachim and Alexandra took Nikolai to his first day at school at Herlufsholm boarding school.
The family posed outside the school and gave an interview.
Nikolai: "Yes, it'll be exciting and I'm looking forward to it. A lot actually".
Joachim: "It's a big day".
Alexandra: "It'll be odd not to have him at home. - But fortunately we'll see him again soon".
Nikolai will sleep in a dormitory with twenty other pupils and he believes he will be able to sleep depite someone snoring and other sounds at night: "I think you'll get used to that soon".
J: "Well, you have to".
A: "You might be the one snoring".
N: "Nah, I don't snore".
A: "Otherwise use earplugs, if you are disturbed".
What will he miss:
N: "The breakfast, where we have a cozy time. And then our many good conversations".
Alexandra points at herself.
N: "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll surely miss Mammi...and Felix and Lili (the dog). And dad and Martin and all of them, but it'll be fine".
J: "Good. You just saved that one".
Nikolai won't be among complete strangers, there are a few at the school whom he knows but they won't go in the same class as him.
How about the strickter rules, discipline and school uniform?
N: "The ting about the school uniform is okay. That makes it all a whole lot easier".
A: "I also had a school uniform and I think that was a really, really good thing".
J: "It'll all be alright. Nikolai must...and here I speak from experience from my own time at bording school - experience and develope himself, break rules... and learn from his mistakes. That's the way it is".
And how long does he plan to go at Herlufsholm?
N: "Initially a year. Then we'll see".
J: "It's after all 10th grade and then we'll see what will happen. Whether Nikolai likes it - and whether we are happy and pleased with the solution".
The other students have brought personal items with them, what has Nikolai brought?
N: "A bit of this and that. Nothing special. Yeah, my bicycle": His mountain bike.
- Judging from the pics in the article it an excited boy who will by now have spend the first nights at Herlufsholm and visibly proud parents.

Wish him nothing but the best of Luck going into this new experience. Some are suited for Boarding School and some aren't. I really hope Nikolai is one of those who are. :)

I hope Nikolai enjoys his new school and manages to fit in well. I visited the school's website and Wikipedia page because I like being nosy, and think it sounds like quite a nice school - I found it interesting to learn that the pupils speak their own version of Danish there.
I didn't realise that he's only going to stay there for a year, perhaps if he and Joachim and Alexandra are happy with Herlufsholm, Felix might go there too. I loved the part of the interview where Alexandra said to Nikolai "but you might be the one snoring".
I agree Tiggersk8 - some children get used to boarding school easily whilst others find it a little more difficult. I remember reading that Prince Philip loved Gordonstoun, whereas Prince Charles hated it, and I don't think Prince Andrew liked it either but I remember reading that Prince Edward did, although I could be mistaking him for someone else.

Yes, if anyone here are familiar with the Flashman novels by George McDonald Frasier, the Danish translations of the boarding school slang in those book use slang from Herlufsholm.

I think it's encouraging that Nikolai himself sounds very enthusiastic about trying the school out, and that the family has made it clear to him that he needs to commit to the year, but then they'll consider other options if it's not working out for him.
Hopefully he enjoys himself so much he decides to stick around!

Prince Nikolai has turned 15 today, August 28, 2014!
On that occasion two charming new pics, taken at his new school, Herlufsholm boarding school, have been released today:

What a good looking young man. I know he is down the line now that F&M have 4 children but I would love to see Nikolai in a few years time all dressed up and ready to attend an official function of some sort representing the DRF.
