It really has to be difficult to work with your in-laws even if you have a great relation! I am sure the Queen is very strong in everything. Wonder if the Queen was involve in which photos to release from the twins today?

Indeed. I don't think it's much different from other business run companies. Even if your are family you have to develop a business-like mentality at such "executive-meetings".
Also, Frederik have been working very close with QMII on the daily running of the show for at least a couple of years now.
And as it is evident that there have been changes, I think it's safe to say that QMII very much listen to advise from her son, and as a consequence her daugher-in-law, Mary, as well.
I haven't been looking particularly close at the DRF calendar for 2016, but there will no doubt be events that would normally have been dealt with the Regent Couple, where M&F will now step in assist and accompany QMII or perhaps even take over. - That alone would warrent several meetings IMO.
Do you remember the documentary about the DRF behind the scenes, where QMII met with M&F to plan and discuss what to see and do during the official state visit to Vietnam.
I can't remember if QMII has planned to go on a statevisit this year, (I believe so because there is usually an incoming and an outgoing statevisit each year) but I believe M&F will go with her and that alone of course require a good deal of modifying already laid down plans and adding new events.

I really can't see Queen Margrethe as a person who would meddle in things like which photo her son and daughter-in-law chooses to release on the birthday of their children.

Indeed, just like Frederik today, Frederik IX (Perhaps even more) was able to be on eye-level with the common man and in a way so it seemed natural. He had after all been sailing for years onboard ship with much larger and less specialized crews than today, the majority having a working class background, so he knew the mindset and the little rituals.
There are several independent stories of Frederik IX from back around late 1940's - well into the 50's. He often went from Fredensborg or Marselisborg down to the local boat harbor to tend to his boat, with an adjutant. (There were no bodyguards back then). And when blue-collar workers cycled past they used to greet him and it happened on several occasions that Frederik IX (and the adjutant) was offered a beer, which they drank together. From the bottle naturally.
Apart from being a friendly gesture, sharing a beer is also a very old bonding ritual here in DK, and many other countries. First a beer, then you start chatting and getting to know each other. As late as the mid 80's there were workplaces were the new guy was expected to buy a round of beer to his workmates. A kind of introduction.
Looking at these episodes from above, it's likely that some of the workers were already slightly tipsy after a long day at work (and many beers!) and as such in a very friendly mood - and who says no to beer on a hot day anyway?
But there is a picture and a story (from some 5-6 years ago) of Frederik visiting a sports club somewhere and being offered a beer by a guy in his 60's. Which was drunk the proper way, from the bottle and with a firm grip around the bottle. That made a very good impression on the man. That Frederik didn't shy away from having a beer with the common man.
There is a picture of the man and Frederik in the process of downing their beers. - I may have the article somewhere in the archive, otherwise you can find it here on TRF.

A local Copenhagener spotted Frederik on his way delivering Vincent and Josephine in kindergarten this morning. On the cargo bike and with Ziggy. And not least, notice that little Josephine is cycling on her own little pink bike with stabilizers

I love that it's an everyday sight in Denmark to bump into Frederik and Mary on bikes in the streets delievering and picking up their children from kindergarten. I'm in no doubt they are SO much hands-on parents and that taken the children to school and kindergarten are on everyday basis in the Danish Crown Prince Family.

Was it pre-school or actual 'school'? What age do children in Denmark start school?

I never tire of seeing these kind of pictures. It's lovely and the kids will always remember it.

I'm no Dane, but I believe from other posters kids really start "school" at 6. I recall Christian and Isabella's first days when they were 6. Kindergarten is more "pre-school" (as opposed to the U.S. where kindergarten, which starts at 5, is the beginning of elementary school)

It is neither school or pre-school. The right word is kindergarten. A place to play, having naps and just being a child and learning through playing, social activities, and develop your social behavior and learn basic things like if you want to try the swing you have to wait to it become your turn. As GracieGiraffe says the Danish children first start in school when they're 6 years old.
So Vincent and Josephine still have 1.5 years back in kindergarten.
Christian now goes in 4.klasse (4th grade)
And Isabella in 2. klasse (2nd grade)
I hope it makes sense :)

What a nice picture. And little Miss Independent Josephine riding her own bike! I think F&M are going to have their hands full with that one
