Summary of article in Billed Bladet #19, 2015.
Written by Ulrik Ulriksen.

As you know M&F went for a little outing to East Greenland recently.

They touched down in the small airport at Nerlerit Inaat. And this is where most, if not all, of the pictures are from.
From here they flew with a twin engined propeller plane to Danmarkshavn, further north. Here a team from (almost certainly) the Sirius Patrol waited for them. (Because there are hardly anyone else around at all in this area!)
And they went out for a couple of days on the ice on sledges.

It's springtime in Greenland now so the temperature in Nerlerit Insaat was a balmy minus 10 degrees C = 14 F.
Further north the temperature dropped to minus 20 degrees C = - 4 F.
According to the article they trekked between Danmarkshavn (*) and Daneborg, which is the HQ for the Sirius Patrol.
The area is also a nature reservation, so apart from the occasional hut used by the Sirius Patrol, there are literally no humans around.

The locals at Nerlerit Insaat were pretty delighted to see M&F and that is evident from the photos.

(*) That is basically a supply base for researchers, equipment supplies for the Sirius Patrol and last but by no means least a weather station. The weather stations is a goldmine! Because so many routes pass the North Pole so the airlines pay handsomely to get the very latest on the weather in order to save fuel.
There are permanently some six-eight people stationed at Danmarkshavn. And in the winter months they are utterly alone, perhaps visited once or twice by a team from the Sirius Patrol.
In the summer, things get busy! Researches fly in, supplies fly in, even the odd tourist and film crew and sometimes the DRF.

The Sirius Patrol, consisting of some 14 men, maintain Danish sovereignty by their physical presence. During the brief summer months they patrol in cutters but during the long winter months two-man teams patrol a coastline that is equivalent to the US-east coast. The aim is to visit every cove and valley every five year - if the weather permits! So there are here and there entire generations of birds, seals, moscus oxen and wolves that have never even seen a human being, because there have been no one in the area for perhaps ten-fifteen years.
The Sirius Patrol itself is under the navy and the individual members come from all branches of the military and they serve for two years, only interrupted for a brief visit to Iceland, for a check up with a doctor and a dentist. The teams consists of a one year veteran and a rookie, who next year will be the veteran of a team.
After two years they return to Denmark, but quite a few opt to return for another two year tour. They rarely stay on in the military upon returning to Denmark, because they have become too independent and too self reliant. It's difficult for them to become a part of a larger team and to have someone telling them what to do.
The Sirius Patrol don't use planes. The weather is simply too unreliable and where should they get fuel anyway? Nor do they use snowmobiles.
Snowmobiles don't warn against polar bears. You can't eat a snowmobile. If a snowmobile breaks down you are in deep trouble! If one dog breaks down, you move on anyway.

Since there are no photos of M&F on the ice, let's have the next best thing, some scenery from the Sirius Patrol:

The dogs look cute. They ain't! And being working dogs they are put down at age five: http://maugstruptidende.dk/wp-content/uploads/Morten-Hilmer.jpg
Here are three researchers outside a cabin where hunters lived, sometimes for a couple of years without human contact. Nowadays some of them are used as a pit stop by the patrols. As always, thanks for your impressive work, Muhler :flowers:

I'm pleased we haven't seen any pictures - means F&M has had their romantic little trip for themselves.

Perhaps the Danish court at some time or at some occasion publish a picture of F&M sitting on the dogsled out on the Greenland ice. Maybe a selfie? That could be nice (-;

Indeed it is harsh.
But there are no retirement homes for sleigh dogs.
They are too wild and vicious to become pets. These are dogs who without hesitation would attack a polar bear, in fact they are supposed to!
If a dog can't keep up, the dog will be more tired and weaker than the other dogs. The other dogs will attack, bite and very likely kill a weak dog within the pack.

You can't put them inside in a kennel somewhere either. That would be like putting a lumber-horse on grass to do nothing. They would go nuts, if they couldn't run and be outside with the other dogs. So they live life to the fullest and die young. Life is hard on the ice.

In fact a serious animal welfare problem in Greenland is neglect of sleigh dogs due to lack of use.

ADDED:

And yet, each member of a patrol often have a favorite dog among the pack. And that is also the dog who will eat his feces when he goes out on the ice to "wash his hands". Good nourishment and a good way to get rid of items that could tempt a polar bear to come closer.
And because the patrol members often bond with a particular dog they are also the ones who will shoot the dog, when it becomes old, sick or injured. That is not something they will leave to others.

Thanks Polyesco. :)

I'm more fascinated by his bike. It's developed for the US Marines says the caption, with a life time warranty for the frame. A real show off bike.
Half the fun of attending anything with the guys is to show off your equipment. :napoleon:(we need a tyre-kicking smiley)

Found this on instagram. according to this, its from two weeks ago
Frederik around town on his bike

Looks like Frederik is at the Mille Miglia, Italy today. Not sure if participating or just looking at the classic cars that I'm sure Muhler would enjoy

Looks like a vintage car rally and that girl managed a couple of great photos with not only Fred but another good-looking competitor as well.

yes. I think the other guy is a model. But Frederik is not too far off as well lol ;)
Lucky girl

He does, and she looks great. Love her outfit with those gold shoes. :flowers:

But was 'our hero' trying to get her to carry the 'whatever it was' as they walked off. :p

lol
yes seems like the typical, "Ill carry the gift but you actually give it to them" ;)

Oh yes a Real man doesn't want to be seen carrying a prissy boutique bag!!! I thought the same thing as you Lady Nimue.

Thanks, Polyesco. :flowers:

That smells like a birthday party and I think "your hero" was carrying a present. :p

13:1 Frederik doesn't even know what the present is.

So they went to Søren Heedegaard's 60th birthday, so it surely was a present.
Don't think Frederik needed to worry about the other guys present while carrying that bag as Mary's hairdresser is gay and BTW apparently happily married for many years.

The picturesque town of Dragør is a very nice place. Notice the summerly foot-wear of the PET officer.

- I can't make out what they say, apart from Frederik congratulating someone, probably a journalist.

Frederik looks like a handsome model.

Thanks Polyesco,

Here a picture: https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/h...e15/11324957_362269747302678_2029473877_n.jpg

Both Frederik and Mary looked really attractive. They are indeed a good looking couple. :brows:

And this looks exactly like hubby and I on our way to birthdays. My husband carries the gift all the way - leave it to me one meter before the doorstep - and I get all the credit when handing over the present. That's gentlemen! Especially when we (probably Mary as well) get the phrase from the hosts "Oh thanks, oh it must had been heavy to carry!" :p

Great found, Polyesco. This was a private party, so we may not get any others pictures than this picture/videoclip. And as Muhler said; this was a at the private 60th birthday party at Mary's hairdresser (as well as F&M's good friend) Søren Hedegaard. He and his hubby, Preben Christensen, had 10th years wedding anniversary the same day and they said to BB.dk last week "that they would celebrate both events that day quietly and privately with family and good friends."

And as we can see, they did. And finally, the weather in Zealand showed its warmer and beautiful spring side. The people F&M talk to is most likely just people on the street spotting them on the way to the party. Tells about how close you can bump into and have a little quick chat with our Crown Prince couple in the streets.

A happy 47th birthday to CP Frederik today :daneflag2:

BB has written a quite long article from his birth to his happy I today:

Christian and Isabella are in school today, but before going to school Mary and the children have very likely celebrated daddy like this. Traditional Danish birthday celebration with morning song, morning kisses and morning birthday gifts to the breakfast. The day is celebrated privately and Mary and Frederik have the day off today, so Mary has good time to celebrate her husband and maybe Vincent and Josephine have got a day home from kindergarten?

(It may be a child's birthday in this video, but it's done in pretty much the same way with the adults:)

Yes, the most heartwarming presents you get from your (small) children is in the morning, as they are usually homemade - or just presented in the spur of the moment like a toothbrush... (Okay, that one was from a nephew).

Not having anything on the official calendar doesn't necessarily mean they have the day off....;)

Mary had a meeting at Amalienborg with Mary Fonden, South African org. 'Brothers for life' and 'Dialog mod Vold' (Dialogue against violence).

Hoping Frederik had a nice birthday :flowers:

You are absolutely right, Nordic.

I should had written 'no official events'. For as we see regularly F&M has meeting/events there never are writen in the official calendar.

Unfortunately, the Danish court isn't so modern or open in terms of written the behind-the-scenes event in the calender after they had taken place. Perhaps more openness will come when F&M takes over some day. We can hope and I think it. We are already seeing more openness in relation to the Mary Foundation's work behind the scenes through the Mary Foundation's Facebook page - which is also the only reason why we get information about the Mary Foundation's meeting today.

BT has also made a birthday gallery of Frederik today:

Ikke til at tro: Kronprins Frederik fylder 47 år i dag - se de bedste billeder | www.bt.dk

Hope Frederik and familiy have a nice birthday evening :)

and I agree, such a shame that we dont get pictures of even a brief mention on the calendar of the meetings and reunions that both Frederik and Mary do.
other royals list meetings like these on their calendars

Truly enjoying all these lovely galleries of Frederik :flowers:;);)]

It looks as though they might have gone to see either the revue Tam Tam (although maybe Christian and Bella are too young for that?) or the ballet (with costumes and scenography by QMII) The Swineheard.

Thanks for posting, Polyesco :flowers:

Thank Polyesco,

Yes it seems Frederik, Christian and Bella went in Tivoli tonight.
Notice how good they (as always) are to shake hands with eye contact and all. And how Christian, like father and little brother Vincent, looks handsome in his red pants

It has been too late for Vincent and Josephine and Mary are still in NY with the Mary Foundation and will first be home tomorrow. Judging by their neat clothes I guess they went to see a show?

:previous: Thanks Polyesco,

A very normal thing to see in Copenhagen. Nice right? Frederik has most likely been on his way to deliver Vincent and Josephine in kindergarten.

Nice pictures. The twins are getting so big, Frederik may not be able to take them this way much longer :)

Are the schools in Denmark on summer vacation yet? Will the family be moving to Fredensborg for the summer?
