Well, back in 1997 Frederik was IIRC still in the Frogman Corps and he apparantly didn't have a valet then and anyway the visit was only for a couple of days. So Frederik packed his own suitcases, including socks - without bothering to check whether there were holes.
He would naturally have discovered the holes in Japan, but what the heck, he would be wearing shoes, so who would notice?
Except that he was to attend a Japanese tea ceremony and what do you normally do when you go inside in Japan?
He did afterwards state that he regretted he hadn't checked his socks beforehand.
Frederik tells in the book: ..."The comical bit for me was that I arrived suitable attired in suit and tie but completely unprepared for the fact that you have to drop your shoes and sit down on your knees. Back then there weren't so many with me in my entourage and in the morning I had just quickly pulled on som stockings - and then there were holes in them.
The press thought it was hilarious. That here I come, fresh Frederik, and then there are holes in the socks. But I wasn't thrashed as being messy in the papers and there wasn't critique of lacking councelling either. The press-image was more like that it was a hoot, and how good it is that Frederik is human".
But since then he has been more vigilant and he now has servants (a valet) on important trips abroad. You have to look your best in order to show your hosts respect.
- He's got that one right! If there is one thing that can give me the urge to slap people in the back of the heads it's celebs who dress fashionably sloppy because it's about MEEE and not the event or the hosts.

This picture is unique. It show QMII and Frederik greeting Cubas Fidel Castro during a UN summit in Copenhagen. It was the first time Fidel Castro was ever seen at such an event without wearing a uniform.
Being the head of state present with the longest seniority protocol dictated that he was seated next to the host QMII. - Should have been interesting! Fidel Castor is known to be very talkative and QMII who represents everything he is against, would certainly not have been intellectually daunted by him. She would, I'm sure, also have been able to quote Karl Marx...
