Thanks, Dazzling :flowers:

Nice touch to let the children take part as well. - Good practice.

I noticed QMII's adjutant unusually walked right beside her down the stairs. To help should she feel unsure on her legs?
(Correction: He's not an adjutant. I must be going blind. So he is escorting QMII).

Thanks Dazzling, Muhler and Iceflower.

How nice to bring the oldest children to this event. I like the sculpture by Henrik.

Christian and Bella really isn't little children anymore.. Christian looks dapper in his suit and Bella looks so sweet and pretty!

It's funny, I have always thought Christian was the splitting image of Mary, and now I see more and more Frederik in him. As he stands there in his suits. The same with Bella. She (still) is the absolutely splitting image of Frederik, but I see more and more Mary in her as she grows up. Especially on the pictures from last night.

Has there been any word why Mary did not attend or was she scheduled not to attend?

It's lovely to see some of the kids attending. Thanks for the additional pictures.

Telling us that it was Christian who helped grand papa with unveiling the new sculpture.

She was scheduled not to attend.. and it's quite understandable and obvious, me thinks.

I guess she just wanted to spend one evening home after having had 30+ events (from early morning to late night) for 5 days in a row for the past week? And also last week had she (F&M) 4 evening events too.

I you take a quick count in the official calenda Mary has had almost 40 events on the calendar during the past 10 days :coffee:

Or maybe she had some kind of after-event after the conference.

I hope Mary had made herself a good cup of coffee and has been laying on the couch with Vincent and Josephine and watched good film on Netflix her entire Friday evening ;)

It's great to see the older grandchildren accompanying Prince Henrik to this event. Isabella has a beautiful smile!

Goodness Christian and Bella are beautiful children, their eyes are stunning

:previous: very nice. We know Frederik has gone with the Queen for these audiences for a long time. It's nice that they are focusing on these events and that it's on the calendar.

Thanks, Polyesco. :flowers:

A nice photo of the two co-regents (?) and the Us Secretary of State.

Co-regents because I have a feeling Frederik is running the DRF more and more. It's a good transition.

Did something similar happen in the Netherlands? And also Belgium and Spain, despite the abdications there not being planned as such?

I counted 12 cars coming into the square. That's a lot for a delegation. Anyway Kristian Jensen - is he Denmarks Secretary of State to USA or something like that?
We don't have one just a Foreign Affairs minister. Who does similiar work.

Yes I believe Frederik is being prepared for the top job. But not because of any Abdication. I believe Her Majesty will stay in the job for as long as she is physically able. I truly believe only severe ill health would make her step down. But then I could be wrong. A nice retirement in the South of France would be very inviting.

I would hardly say Frederik is running the DRF and I wouldn't go as far as calling him and QMII co-regents. QMII is definitely preparing him (and Mary) but her preparation of him has been a gradual process through the past many years. That he assumes a more present role next to her seems quite natural as Henrik isn't there for most official engagements such as this anymore. I also agree with Tarlita that abdication is inconceivable when talking about QMII.

Kristian Jensen is the Minister for Foreign Affairs as well as the Deputy PM.

Do you think there may be a abdication in Denmark?

Well the Queen has said time and time again she will not abdicate and that it is a job for life. I doubt there will be an abdication in Denmark anytime soon

For various reasons which I haven't got time for right now. My guess, because that's what it is, says at most there is a 15% chance of QMII abdicating within the next five years.
After five years that number drops.

After five years that number drops.

mulher, do you mean that after 5 years that number would increase, instead of drop, as QM gets older?

No, I mean drop. To 10 % or less.

QMII is 76 and a heavy smoker. She is not a physically active as she used to be - I.e. dancing ballet.

Regardless there would in my estimation be around 5 % probability of QMII abdicating within five years.
That is if she become more or less paralyzed after a fall or a seizure. Or she is diagnosed with an irreversible medical condition - Alzheimer, dementia and so on.
In such a situation I believe she would feel it was okay to abdicate, because her time is running out and she will be increasingly unable to fulfill her duty.
That figure is IMO a constant and will also be valid ten years from now.
(Statistically speaking all Danes have an average 1 % chance of dying every year. Since QMII is now 76 that figure must have gone up to 2-3 % if not more. M&F in comparison probably have 0.5 % or less chance of dying each year.)

The remaining 10 % cover the many reasons why QMII, apart from her health, may decide to abdicate.
That goes from wishing to pass on the mantle while Frederik is still in his prime, and sparing him the sorrow of becoming king, while at the same time loosing his mother.
Perhaps to prevent Frederik from doing a Prince Charles - i.e. waiting forever.
To a wish from her to perhaps look after and care for PH.
Or losing the spark after PH's death.
- All sorts of reasons we can possibly come up with.

However if that does not happen within the next five years. Then QMII will be 81 and an abdication really doesn't make that much a difference anyway.
It will also be a very clear indication that QMII genuinely intends to stay on the throne until she dies, no matter what!
Because right now Frederik is as ready as he can be.

We can discuss forever whether QMII in that case is selfish or merely adhering to an old tradition.

Personally I believe there are times when you should make room for others to take over. And that I think is something QMII should consider these years.
Because Frederik has been groomed all his life for becoming a king and he is ready. The opinion polls point to the general public thinking that as well.
Also, with modern healthcare there is a very good chance of QMII living past 90.
By then Frederik will be in his 60's and past his prime. And we will be looking to Christian.

Monarchs were not expected to live that long. So while there was always the danger of a monarch dying too young, most heirs nevertheless took over while they were still in their prime.
With an average lifespan closing in on 100, for those below 60 today, medical breakthroughs within the next decade could very well result in say M&F living well past 100.
So we need to rethink the concept of: The king is dead, long live the king, or heirs in their 70's and 80's will become the rule rather than the exception.

And I would like the day Frederik become king to be happy day for him. With his mother standing behind him beaming like a beacon from pride.

But QMII is of the old school and that's why I believe there is a 85 % chance of her not abdicating within the next five years.

Thanks, Iceflower. :)

With our Marie being at a course, it's logic Joachim is still in DK.

This, to me, is the best view and reasoning for an abdication of a monarch. It enables a transition period where the baton is passed on to the heir yet the abdicating monarch is still very much a part of the monarchy, ready to assist and advise her heir and in general, take time to just breathe easier, enjoy the life around her knowing her legacy is well stabilized into the future. Its kind of like painting a picture then being able to sit back, relax and enjoy the emotions that picture evokes.

I think as the years pass, the old school sentiment of duty until death will pass as the younger generations realize that sometimes duty is knowing when its time to throw in the towel, hang up the gloves, put down the paintbrush and like a seasoned farmer, enjoy the harvest they've sowed and cared for.

It may not happen with the older monarchs and heirs such as Margrethe, Elizabeth and perhaps even Charles but I do think it will be a more acceptable thing in future years to come.

I think that her Majesty prefers being Queen as Prince Henrik is still alive.
He seems such a strange man !

I don't know if a new thread should be started but a press release was sent out regarding the DRF and the Rio Olympics.
